Description
No. 838,184. PATENTED DEC. 11, 1906. N. s. v. HAMBL. FORGE DRAFT.
APPLIOATION FILED 00T.13.1905.
VL/gTNEEEEE: INVENTIIIF\ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application filed October 13. 1905. Serial No. 282.601.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN S. V. HAM-EL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in ForceDrafts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in force-drafts, and is designed to provide a device which may be placed in the fire-box of a furnace to cause an increase in the draft, in devices of which kind as previously constructed the difficulty has been that the steam or air that is forced into the fire-box has not been distributed evenly therethrough.
It is the object of this device to obviate this difiiculty.
The device consists of a chambered cap having a plurality of arms radiating therefrom, said arms communicating with said chambered cap and being provided on one of their surfaces with a plurality of openings. The chambered cap is also provided with a plurality of openings on one of its sides.
In the drawings herewith accompanying and forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a boiler and fire-box, showing my improved device in position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my improved force-draft. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same.
In said drawings same letters of reference refer to like parts.
In said drawings, A represents the boilercasing; B, the boiler; C, the grate, and D the fire-box. Adapted to be inserted within the opening of the fire-box and supported therein in any suitable way is my improved forcedraft E. This device consists of a chambered cap F, provided with a plurality of sleeves G, opening into said chamber. Adapted to be set into said sleeves are a plurality of L. Means are provided, as at M, to attach the device to a source of steam-supply.
The operation of my device is as follows: The device is attached to a source of steamsupply in any suitable manner and is then inserted within the fire-box, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The steam is admitted thence into the chamber and is then conducted from the chamber to the radially-extending arms, going from thence through the openings in said arms into the fire-box. The steam coming through the openings rushes into the fire-box and up through the grate, causing an additional draft and causing thereby a partial vacuum, which causes the air to rush in after the steam with greater rapidity, causing an increase in the draft. It will also be seen that the force of the steam coming from the radial arms has the same pressure practically on all points, making a uniform draft throughout the fire-box.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim In a device of the class described, a chambered cap adapted to be attached to a steampipe, said cap being provided with a plurality of openings, and a plurality of hollow arms extending radially from and communicating with said chamber, said arms being closed at one end and provided with a plurality of vents therein spaced apart from said cap In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two witnesses, this 10th day of October, 1905.
NATHAN S. V. HAMEL.
In presence of- NATHAN CLIFFORD, ELGIN O. VERRILL.
