as Hat-platen 'or book type-writers.
L The object ofthe invention 1s to adapt the ribbon-guide to type-heads of extraordinary Afortype-writmgr machines of that class known width-as, for instance, those carrying words.
instead of letters-by roviding the guide with yielding sections lbcated at opposite sides of the type-opening in the lde to depress the active portion of the rib on and arranged to yieldwhen presented to one of the machine-supporting tracks or 'des in order to permit t e rintmg-point o the machine To the ac complishmentiof this objectithe preferred embodiment of the invention .comi prehends the construction and arrangement .of parts to be hereinafter'described, illustrated in the accom anying drawings, and defined in the appen ed claims.
. In said drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional ele' vation of a portion of atype-writing machine accordance with my. invention.l Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of a portion of the machine structure and the ribbon-guide. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the ribbon- Fig. 4 is a perspective view of t e guide. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of portions ofi the ribbon-guide'and platen, illustrating the maie yields to enable characters to.,be prigiiied close to a track orguide of the machine-supporting frame. Fi 6 is a transverse section onthe line 6 6'of Fglg. 2. Fig. 7 is asimilar view on the line'7 ,7 of Fig. 2, and Fig. Sis a detail perspective view of one ofthe yielding sections of the' guide.
The machine illustrated inthe drawings is the Elliott-Fisher billing-machine of commerce, disclosed 'more fully in'Patent. No.l
573,868, to R. J. Fisher. This machine insupporting frame '1, mounted to travel longitudmally of a fiat platen 2 for letter-spacing 'de inverted."
u on tracks or guides 3, overlying-the side e es of the platen and constituting the side ra` s of what 1s known as a machine-supporting frame. Mounted to travel transversely of the platen for letter-spgping upon the car- Iiage supporting or mac e frame 1 is a carriage v4, equipped with downwardly-acting type-bars 5, one of which is indicated in Fig. 5. The type-bars are mounted to swing from a type-ring 6, suspended from the casing of the carriage 4l by hangers 7 The ribbon mechanism includes a pair of ,spool-shafts 8 and 9, suitably operated and supported at o posite'ends of the carriage by hangers 10. he shafts 8 and 9 support ribbon-spools 11 and 12, which rotate with. the shaftstofeed the ribbon 13 in one direction or the otheras the carriage is advanced in owhubs 14 of the spools are bearing-thimbles 15, projecting beyond theheads of the spools to rovide,l trunnions, which are received wit the annular bearing-rings 16 of ribbon-frame-supporting brackets 17.- The brackets 17 are secured many suitable manner to' the vertically-disposed end portions 18 of the ribbonsupporting and guiding frame 19. The ribbon-guiding frame is designed to lead the ribbon 13 under the type-ring and exf tends from one spool to the other. ThisA frame comprises end members 2O of right-angular form, having side flanges 21 and conj nected by a more or less open intermediate member .or` ribbon-plate 229 lThe ribbon-plate 22 is cut out to' `.form a comparatively Wide central type-opening 23 and parallel ribbon- guides 24 and 25, pau-ed at opposite sides of the opening 23, as best shownin'F ig.3.v `The ribbon I3,-passi.1:1g`be'l tween the spools, extends aroundandunder the ribbon-guiding frame alnd'is threaded over the gui ing-fingers 25 and under the ngersv 24. `The`ribbonspools` and the ribbon be. s stood in the art, andto facilitatethis move- 'sup orting and guiding frame are designed to -l llliited laterally in a manner well underment' theframe isl provided with guidestuds 26, movable within guide-loops.27, secured to thejtype-ring 6. cludes in itsl general organization' a'carriage- The structure thus lfardescribed.--is` not ref,4
more disclosed the idea of bending dow-n the inner-longitudinal edges of the guiding-ringers 24-for the purpose of depressing the active portion ofthe ribbon-to Wit, that-.portion 'which extends across the type-ope ningl23 and 1s designed to receive the impactof t e type when the latter descend to the printin #point -It is with this particular feature Iott e con struction that my present invention is primal rly concerned.
. the ribbonguide is quite wide; This is made' 1 5 It Willbe noted thatthe 23 in 'necessary by' reason of the fact that it is some times desirable to equip one jor 'more of the type-bars with an extraordinarily-Wide type'- head carrying several type-faces constituting a Word which insa'I particular lline of business' is used with great ifrequency-for 4instance,
'the Word Wire 'or' nails, used in the ccr'respondence and accounts 'of concerns engaged in the manufacture of suchgoods The p'rovision of this wideI type-opening has been accompanied by a distinct disadvantage, hoW- ever-,for the reasonthat when one 4of the rigidri bbon-depressing langes of the Laganke and' Smith guide is brought into contact with one of the tracks or rails of the machine-supporting frame bythe movement of the carriage 4 to the right or'left the travel ofthe carriage is arrested, although the printing-point of the machine is severalletter-spaces removed from the rail. It is therefore impossible to Write close to the margins' of the Work-sheet,
and the right-hand dange constitutes a lineylock 'Which cannot be released in order to per- .'mit the printing'of'one or two additional letters necessary to complete a Word. VTo obviate this difficulty,l I form the ribbonde pressing flanges separatel from the ribbonplate and vmount them in suchmanner that when a flange contacts vwith one of the side rails or tracks Yof the machine-supporting frame said ilange will yield relative to the ribbon-guide, so that the latter and the car-y riage may continue to moveior the urpose of presenting'the printing-point of t e machine close to the' rail Vinorder that a' Word may be completed or a line of writing 'com menced close to the'r'nargin lof the sheet.. As
bestfshown in Fi 4 of-'the dravvings, the
' ribbon-depressing anges ,28 are located at opi positesides ofthe type-opening 23 in the rib. i
v plates 2'9 are sup on-guide and depend fromthe inner ends of shiftable 'plates or guide-sections l29.` The orted uponthe ribbon-plate l 22 and are 'pro ded with lon itudinal slots t e ribboneguidin 30 .'for the rece tion of heade guide-screws 31, carried by t e ribbon-plate 22.
- To the rear ends of the plates 29 are secured s rings 32, having their outer ends securedto.A frame and serving to yieldingly retain t e plates in theirgnormal positions With the rib Onjdepressing ilanges l28 thereof held a ainst the inner'edg-es of the lingers 24. It Wi l now be seen that normally the depressing-flanges 28 engage" the ribbon at' opposite s1des of a comparatively Wide tv e-opening in theribboneguiding frame to ho d the active portion of the ribbon closely adjacent to the Writin -surface of the'platen, but'that'vvhen one of t ese flanges is presented to one of the tracksor 'rails 3, as shown in 1Fig. 5, the movement of the carriage Will not be positively arrested,l but may continue the 'distance ofone f or more additional letterspaces,
Itisthfought that from the foregoing the Vconstruction and operation of `my improved ribbonguide will be clearly comprehended. Itis to be understood, however, that I reyieldin a relatively g the rib on'and lengthwise therependently of of. v A
