To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. TROTTE'R, a
citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Massage-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains.to make and use the same, reference being had to the accomianying drawings, forming part of this speci ication, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a massage- Inachine embodying the ieatures of my invention, portions of the motor-casing and support being broken away to more clearly show the construction of parts of the machine. Fig. 4 is an end view showing in broken lines the various positions of the applicator when a combined I gyratory and oscillatory movement is being imparted to it, and. This invention relates to massage machines.
One object'of m r invention is to provide a massa e-machine having means for impartingoi'ther a gyratory or an oscillatory motion to the massaging instrument or applicator, as it commonly called.
Ai'iothcr object of my invention is to provide a massagc-ilnachine having a removable applicater-carrying member which can be replaced by a new one when it becomes worn out, and thus enable the machine to be used for an extended period.
Another object of my invention is to provide amassage-machine comprising a motor and an ap l' :ator and means for imparting a compounr movement to the applicator, so that the patient being operated. on will re ceive a pounding and a rubbing action simultaneously.
Another object of my invention is top'rovidc means for varying the degree of moves mcnt which is impartoi'l to the applicator while the machine is still in operation, thus permitting the machine to be used for very in the position it occupiestend to the motor.

Other desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.
Referring to the drawings, which represent the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates a shell or casing having a motor mount ed therein, said casing being provided with a handle 2, through which the wires 3 and 4 ex A tubular support 5 is connected to the casing 1, and removably mounted in the'outer end of said tubular support is the member which carries the massaging instrument 'or applicator 6. This applirwatoncarrying member consists of a cylindrical bearing 7, which iits into the end of the tubular support 5 and is held in operative position by a screw 8 threaded. therein and extending through an elongated. slot in the tubular support, a clamp 9 being interposed I between the head of said screw and the outer surface of the tubular support, as shown in Fig. 1. of the drawings. The bearing 7 is rovidcd with a central bore or slot 10, which extends to the peri hery of said hearing, as shown in F ig. 2, and the device which carries the applicator 6 is located in said slot. Said device preferably consists of two blocks 11 and 12, the block 11 being pivotal] y connected to the bearing 7 by a pin 13,'arranged at one side of the longitudinal axis of said hearing, and the block 12, which has a shank 14, that is connected to the armature-shaft 15, being pivotally connected to the block 11 by a pin 16, extending at right angles [10 the pin 13, so that the applicator is fastened to the armature-shaft by a universal connection of simple construction which can be manufactured at a small cost.
The armature-slraft of the motor is provided with an extension 17, which projects at bin angle to said shaft and acts as a cranlvpin to iimpnrta rotary movement to the shank H of the block .12, and accordingly transmit a gyratory motion tothe applicator 6 when it is connected to the block 12, as indicated by the arrows 18 in Fig. 2. tion is imparted to the applicator simultaneously with the gyratory motion, so that said applicator will pound, as well as rub, the patient being operated on, thereby producing a massage which is 'reatly superior to any produced by the macdiines heretofore in use, which were capable of imparting only a rubbing action. This oscillating motion that isimparted to the applicator simulta neously with the gyratory motion is effected by pivoting the block 11 at one side of the lon itudinal axis of the bearing 7, so that said applicator will swing about the in 13 as a fulcrum, as shown in Fig. 3, whic 1 in full lines shows the applicator in the positions it occupies at the beginning of its stroke and in broken lins the position it occupies at the end of its stroke. Fig. 4 shows in broken lines the various positions which the applicator 6 assumes Vhen a combined gyratory and oscillatory movement is being imparted to it. The end of the shank 14 is provided with an enlarged hollow portion 19, having a closed end provided with an opening for receiving the extension 17.0n the end of the armature-shaft to connect said shank and shaft together. If desired, the applicator-carrying member can be moved inwardly to cause said extension to project farther into the enlarged hollow portion of the shank, thus not impartin great a degree of movement to said shank and to the applicator as when the extreme outer end of said extension engages the closed end of the shank. This is a very desirable feature of my invention, as it'cnables the machine to be used for massaging very gently or for massaging vigorously without stopping the machine to readjust any of the parts, it being simply necessary for the o erator to loosen the screw S and move it to c range the position of the bearing 7. Fun thermore, if desired, the operation of the applicator can be discontinued, while the n1otor continues in operation if the bearing 7 is moved inwardly far enough to cause the strai ht portion of the extension 17 to engage the closed end of the enlarged portion of the shank 14, this straight portion of course bc= ing located at the center of the arn'iatureshaft. For keeping the connection between the shank of the applicator and the armaturc shaft thoroughly lubricated the enlarged portion 19 of the shank is packed with felt soaked with oil.

end of the applicator and the end of the shank 7 5 14, where it is connected to the armatureshaft. constructing the machine in this manner the applicator is perfectly balanced, so that there is practically no vibration to the machine,and accordingly the operator, who holds the machine in his hand, can handle the machine more accurately. The applicator-carrying member is the part which receives the greatest Wear, and accordingly wears out quicker than. the motor and the other parts of the machine; but as said member is removable it can be replaced by a new one at a small cost, and thus enable the machine to be used for an extended period. It will of course be undcrs tood that the particu lar kind of applicator that is used in the machine is immaterial, as different a plicators are used for different classes of work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lets ters Patent, is-
1. In. a machine of the class described, a motor, a pivotally-mounted applicator-carrying device eccentrically connected to the armature-shaft of said motor, and a pivotally-mounted member carrying said device and having its pivot arranged at approximately a right angle to the ivot of said device and adjacent one end t iereof; substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the class described, a motor, an oscillating member adapted to have an applicator connected thereto, a device co'nnmrtcd to said member by a ivot extending at tL] .)IOXl'1T1ttl/8ly right an 'l ds to the axis on which said member oscilfates, said device also being adapted to have an 'applica tor connected thereto, and a shank on said device ecccntrically connected to the armature-shaft of the motor; substantially as described.
3. In a machine of the class described, a motor having an arnmture-shaft provided with a crank in, a pivotally-mounted applicator-carrier having a shank provided with an enlarged hollow end which is packed with oil-saturated felt, and an end wall closing said hollow portion and irovided with an opening to receive the cranlepin on the arms ture-shaft; substantially as described.
