HARROW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 20, 1906.
Application filed March 21, 1904:. Serial No. 199.078.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FEDER LAURSEN, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has relation to improvements in harrows; and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partly broken away to illustrate certain details of construction. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view, partly in section, on the plane indicated by line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view taken on the plane indicated by line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 1 designate parallel side bars, and 2 2 parallel end bars, which are united to provide a frame.
Numeral 3 is a ring or loop secured to one of the end bars for the attachment of the necessary draft device.
Cn the und-er surfaces of the side bars 1 1 are journal-boxes 4 4, adapted to receive the studs 5 of the shafts 6. Suitably fastened to each of the shafts 6 are a plurality of harrowteeth 7, having their ends curved all in the Said harrow-teeth are arranged in pairs and disposed at various angles about the shafts, such disposition permitting the teeth of one shaft to revolve between those on the adjacent shaft.
A second frame or housing that serves in the capacity of a platform is designed to rest on the lower frame. Said platform comprises side bars 9 9, arranged above and parallel with the side bars 1 1 of the lower frame, and end bars 8 8, designed to be supported by the end bars 2 2 of the lower frame.
Numerals 10 10 designate corner-posts secured to the upper frame and depending down against the inner corners of the lower frame to prevent lateral movement of the upper frame.
The upper frame is provided with transverse spaced-apart slats 11, secured to the top surfaces of the longitudinal bars 9, and these slats serve as beaters in crushing or breaking the clods of earth as they are thrown upward by the interposing teeth, whereby said clods of earth are permitted to strike against the lower side edges of said slats. These slats also sup port a longitudinal beam 12, which is secured midway of said slats and on which is secured a drivers seat 14, mount ed on a spring-support 13, secured to said beam by a bolt 15.
When the harrow is operated in the direction shown in Fig. 1, clods of earth, cornstalks, and the like will be picked up and operated upon by the rearwardly-projecting portions of the teeth of one roller and the forwardly-projecting teeth of the next following roller. When the pull of the harrow is reversed, the curved portions of the teeth will have a chopping effect upon the soil, and
thereby pulverize the same, the direction of Y* the pull of the harrow depending upon the condition of the soil. For this latter operation I reverse the position of the drivers seat by turning the spring-post 13 about the bolt 15. if'
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention will be understood without a further extended description.
Changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- A harrow constructed of longitudinal side bars and transverse end bars secured together to constitute a lower frame having a plurality of shafts journaled in its side bars arranged one in front of the other, each of said shafts having harrow-teeth thereon, a flat upper frame having side bars parallel with the side bars of the lower frame and supported by the end bars thereof, said end bars serving to space apart said upper and. lower frames, means depending from the up- IOO per frame and contacting With the lower i have hereunto set my hand at Racine, inthe frame to prevent lateral movement of the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, in upper frame 'and said upper frame having the presence of tWo Witnesses.
transverse spaced-apart slats Which extend FEDER LAURSEN. 5 the entire length of its top surface, substan- Witnesses:
tially as specified. WM. HENRY. MILLER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I FRED H. SCHULZ.
