- J ATTOR EYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY CLAY LAND, OF ALTMAN, TEX AS.
WRENCH.
v No. 835,071.
To all whom it may concern:
" Be it known that I, HENRY CLAY LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Altman, in the county of Erath and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Wrench, ofwhich the following is a specification.
v This invention relates to improvements in quick-action wrenches, and has for its ob ject to simplify and improve the construe tion and increase the utility and efiiciency of devices of this character.
' With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, -'as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Inthe'accompanyingdrawings forming a part of this specification, and in which cor-' responding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of the embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation. j T
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the'improved wrench. Fi 2 is a rear'elevation of gitudinal plane of the stock, as shown at 15.v
the upper portion 0 the same. Fi
transverse section on the line 2 of-Fi 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view, enlarged, o the operatin portion of the cam-lever. Fig. 5
is a detai ,ona reduced'scale, showing the de- For the purpgoses of this description the face of the stoc having the. teeth is referred to as the forward side and the op osite' side is referred to as the rear side, t e inclined face 15 of the recess-of the movable jaw bei thus at the rear side of the wrench. Exten from the movable jaw 14 and preferably integral therewith is a standard '16, having spaced teeth 17, correspondi to and engaging the teeth 13'of the stock. he
standard is provided at the endjopposite thejaw 14 with a band 18, bearing upon opposite Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed May 21, 1906. Serial No. 318,033.
.and its attachment free to be Patented Nov-.0, 1906. 2
sides of the stock 10 and around the rear face of the same, the rear end of the band being disposed far enough away from the stock to permit sufficient movement of the stock to releasethe'teeth, as will be obvious. The.
standard is likewise provided with spaced cars 19, extending therefrom intermediate .1ts ends and also bearing uponppposit'e sides of the stock and ex tendingrearwardly of the same.
.Pivoted" at 20 between the extended portrons of the ears 1,9 isa cam21, having a hafndle .22 extending therefrom and with a recess 23 inits face. .Pivoted at 24 within the recess 23' is a bar 25, having a wedge-shaped terminal 26 for bearing in the portion of the movable-jaw recess at thesrear side of the stock, .the inclined or wedge-sha ed side of the .head 26 corresponding to t e inclined portion 15 of the recess.
The cam 21 is so arranged relative to the stock 19 that when the handle 22 is in closed 7 position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the
cam will bear forcibly against the stock and i hold the standard .16 rigidly in contact there' with and at the same time force the wedge-. sha ed end 26 of the bar 25 into the portion of t e movable-jaw recess rearwardly of the stock and tightly compress the movable jaw By this'simple, means a against the stoc twofold grippin 'means is provided for holding the movab e jaw and its standard in locked position relative to the stock, and. thereby'materially increasing the efficiency and strength of the implement.
' When t e handle member 22 is released or moved into position laterally of the stock, as
shown. by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the. head 26 will be wlthdrawn partly from the recessinthe movable 'aw, and thus permit the movable jaw and its standard 16 and ears 18 19 to be moved bodil away from the stock to disconnect the teet 13 17, leaving the movable ja'w quickly adju'sted to any desired extent.
When ad usting the movable jaw and its a standard to the required osition, the closed rear ends of the jaw mem ers 14 15 and the band 1-8bear upon the rear face of the stock 10, and thus keep the teeth from becoming e aged until :the adjustment is complete.
enthe adjustment iscompleted, the return of the handle 22 to its position against the handle 12 will again operate the standard and movable jaw and again lock them in sition.
I I l the stock when the cam is in closed position.
The device is simple in construction, can i p 2. In a wrench, a stock having a station- 30 be inexpensively. manufactured, and employed in all localities where wrenches are re uired. r
he device can be readily adapted foruse as a pipe or rod wrench by serrating the jaw 11, as's' own at 27, and inclining the jaw 1.4, as shown at 28in Fig. 5; but this will not be a departure from the principle of the'invention,
at one end in said cam and with the other end bearing within the recess of saidmovable jaw and clamping the movable jaw'to 'ary jaw at one end and with spaced teeth in one face, a movable jaw having a recess for receiving said stock and of greater length than the-width of the stock, a standard extending from said movable jaw and rovided with teeth engaging the teeth of t e stock and with a band at the o posite terminal of Witnesses WILLIAM E. HUBBERT, WILLIAM A. NANCE.
1-0 as the same results are produced by the same the standard embracing t e rear face of the means and-in the same manner. stock and spaced therefrom, ears bearing H avin thus described the invention, what against the sides of said stock and extending 4 4 is claims. as new is rearwardly of the same, a cam swinging be- 1. In a wrench, a stock having a stationtween said ears and operatin to compress I 5 my jaw at one end with spaced teeth in one said standard against said stoc and an arm face, a movable jaw having a recess for repivoted at one end in said cam and with the celving said stock and ofgreater length-than other end hearing within the recess of said 45 the width of the stock, a standard extendin movable jaw and clamping the movable jaw from said movable jaw and provided wit to the stock when the camjs in closed posizo teeth engaging the teeth of the stock and tipn.
