Description

To (Ll/whom it. nmy concern:
UNITED. STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN HILBERT, or HEUFELD, GERMANY.
MANUFACTUREOF GELATIN AND GLUE FROM series.
Be it known that I', HERMANN HrLBEar, Ph. 1)., chemist, ofJHeufeld, Upper Bavaria, in the German Empire, have invented a new and useful Improvement of Gelatin'and Gluefrom Bones, of which the following is a specification.
\ i The process is essentially as follows: The
bones areground to a fine flour and introduced into a vessel which is titted with a stirring apparatus. In this apparatus the owderedbonc are boiled with water while )eing stirred, and-at the same time while the glue is being-extracted sulfurous-acid gas or other bleaching agents, 'such as sulfites or bisullites, with other aclds or, with other sulextracting of the g than is the case with solution, is
in the same short tin1e,-so that no glue iswasted and the glue remains of a very superior uality. .l\ loreover, the )rocess possessestlie very 'reat advantage that the ue takes lace at a temperature which is substantially much lower recesses as hitherto ordinarily en'iployed,-w lich exert a very important influence on the quality ol the productj The mproved process may conveniently be carried out in practice intli'c. following manner: in a suitable boiler containing m terand most advantageously furnished with a stirring a pliance the houc-llour is introduced am steamis admitted. At the same time the'introduction of the bleaching agent is commenced. The carbondiox-id which is produced when acids are employed is led oil" and the. glue or gelatin isradually extracted from-the bo'ne llour liy atmospheric or higher pressure. Theresidual bone llour is then se aratedlrom the liquor by filtration or by ot ier known means.
' Specification of Letters Patent. j Application filed in. 7, 190 Serial No. 211,550.

Should the output not be satisfactory, the process may be repeated with the residual flour;
The above-described recess has the following among other a vantages: The extraction of the glue or gelatin may be effected at the boiling-point. The guality of the product is greatly improve fIOlll 00111111011 b01188.
the gelatin contained in the ones is recov- An almost absolutely colorless product can be obtained Nearly the whole ofered. The duration of the process is very short, so that the glue or elatin is not dam aged b the action of the leaching agent or by rol hnged boiling.-
hat I claim is v 1. The herein-described process of treating bones with bleaching agents durin boiling bones for manufacturing glue am gelatin which cons sts in 'radually' adding the bleaching agent to t he bones having beenground in the known manner to a flour,
2. The herein-described process oft'reating bones with bleaching agents during bOlllllg the bones for manufacturin glue and gelatin graduall adding to the which consists in bones having been ground in the Known inannor to a flour the leaching agent 111 such a manner that it is used up at the moment in which the glue is dissolving.
3. The herenrdescr bed process or treatm bones with bleachingagents as sulfurous acic during boiling the bones for manufacturing gelatin which consists in gradually to' the bones having glue and 4. he herein-described process of treating bones with bleaching ag'entsas sulfurous acid during boiling the bones for manufacturing glue and gelatin which consists in gradually adding to the bones having been'groundm the usual manner to a flour the sulfurous acidjfin such a manner that it is used up at the moment in which the glue is dissolvlng.
.ln witness whereof I have hereunto set'lny hand in presence of two witnesses. HERMANN.llILBER'l..- .Witncssesz I v V (hiu'nonum Ilanay, Elder, Urrssas J. BrwA-TER.
