. uNcou Lme mac To all w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. POPE, of Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Uncoupling Mechanism for Cars, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the end portion IQ of a car-frame constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side'elevation. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Figs. 4 and 5are detail views.
The urpose of my Ber-operating (1 ed for use with cars equippe with radiallymovable draf riggings, such as are described in the atent granted to H. T. Krakau, reissue 0-. 12,275, dated October 18, 1904.
It provides mechanism in ,Whl
in -rods are independent of'the coupler and wi 1 permit the coupler and draft-rigging to ve not only the ordinarylongitudinal movement incident to buffing and draft, but
' n. The opperate the coupler-lock ir- I respective of the lateral position of the coupler-head. 1 The drawings represent the 0 struction of' my invention;

3 represents the end sill of the car. v 4 is the cou ler-head connected to a radi- 3 5 ally-movable di'aft-rig 'ng, and '5 is the usual chain by which the 100 of the coupler is operated.
6 is abracket projecting upwardly from the upper side of the frame 7, whichcarries o the'coupler and draft-rigging. This bracket is preferably situate just back of the end sill and may be riveted to or cast integral with the frame 7. It furnishes the pivotal support for the end of the lock-liftinglever 8,- to 5 'the forward end ofwhich the chain 5 is at tached, and this leverbeing connected with the coupler and 'draft-ri ging moves laterally \with them in their radia motion. I The crank-shaft 9,..by which the lever 8 is operated, is preferably a double rod made in a single piece extendin from side to side of the car and is provide at the ends with depreferable conbut it may be Specification, of Letters Patent. Application filed April 8, 1905- Serial No. 254.438.

pending handles 10 10. This shaft is jour-l naled in bearings 11 on the end sill or other convenient place and at its middle has a 1 crank portion 9, which projects forwardly double rod a single rod may be used extending from one side of the car and terminating at the far end of the crank 9'.
The lever is preferably provided with a downwardlyprojecting foot 12, which rests its forward end, and for t venting the lever from obs of the car and to en walk over the end sill without being tripped by the lever I prefer to box itin or cover it. with a, shield '13, which may be made of pressed steel and is attached to theend sill or car-frame.
When the parts are thus cons lever 8 will ing and coupler in the radial motions of the atter; but notwithstanding the extent of such motion above the crank 9, which is of suflicient length for that p ose, so that at any time by raising the hand e 10, and thus lifting the crank 9, the lever may be elevated to operate the couplenlock. .If the coupler or its tructing the front tructed, -the' allow the coupler to ull out to an unusuaF extent, the lever will automaticall unlock the, coupler and will hold it up om the tra k. v
I claim- 1. In a car-coupler, the combinationwith' .a draw-head coupling-lock; subs In a car-coupling, the combination with capable of lateral a draw-head norma movement and provi ed with a couplingjaw and locking 'means therefor, of a trans-; versely-extending shaft having a broad -crank portion extending over the draw-head,
I and a pivoted lever.having a'free arm exattachments should break in such a way as to and extends under the lever 8. Instead of a r,
on top of the end sill and upholds the leyer at e purpose 0 preable the brakeman to move laterally with the draftrig normally capable of" lateral operating-lever, having atending across and resting upon said crank portion and connected to said locking means;
substantially as described.
In a car-coupling, the combination With a draw-head normally capable of lateral movement and provided with a couplingjaw and locking means therefor, of a transvrwsely-extending shaft having a broad crank portion extending over the draw-head,
I0 and a pivoted lever having a free arm resting upon said crank portion, and a flexible member connecting said lever with the locking means; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
