UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,-
ANDY o sn'usrER, 10F ARROYO GRANDE, CALIFORNIA.
I DR lL LlNG-TOOF. I
Be it known that I, ANDY C. SHUSTER, av citizen of the United States, and a resident of Arroyo Grande, in the county of San Luis Obispo and State of California, have invented a new and: Improved Drilling-Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description The invention relates to deep-well drilling; and its object is to' provide a new and improved drilling-tool arranged to permit convenient up of a lost bit, to'prevent' injury to the drive-pipe shoe or pipeby the socket of the bit, and to allow the drillin to pass up' away fromrthecuttingedge 0 the it to prevent clog ing of the same, and to l permit it to be rea ily turned in the well;
The invention consists of novel features and arts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
1' A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this s ecification, in which SIIIlllBI characters 'ofre erence indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
the drill-rod, 3
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of arts beingin section. Fig.3 is an enlarge side elevation of the bit, and Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of, the sameon Thedrilling-bit A is fastened on the lower end of a drill rod or stem B, carrying at its upper .end a head'O, to which is secured a lifting cable or. rope D, connected with suitable machinervfor alternately raising and dropping the ner.
4 The drilling-bit is provided with an elonandconnected ,at opposite sides of the bit by"v Hing-tool in the usual mangate d opening A ,arrang'ed between its ends channels A with the lower or c'utting edge A of the bit. Inclined guideways A lead to the up er end. of the opening A so that when the bit is lost the well' and a suitable fishing-tool is employed then: the hooks of the fishing-tool can readily engage the opening A., so that the tool can be drawnup the wellhole to the surface.

ran ed as. described it is I dril 'ngs ass up away from the cutting edge without the well. ence by the arrangement deevident that the anger of clogging the drilling-bit 1n scribed the drilling-bitcan be iea'dily turned to prevent the latter from making a flat hole preferably in the sha e of an inverted frustu m of a cone. By having the swell B arranged as described a it is evident that when usin the drilling-toolthe swell is not liable to str' e and injure the drive-pipe shoe oi the lower end of the pipe,
as the swell properly guides the lower portion of the. drilling-rod on the drive-pipe shoe.
Having thus described .my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent' 1. A well-drilling tool com rising a lifting cable, a drill-rod, and a soli bit removably held on "the-lowerend of the drill-rod and 7 having an opening for engagement by a fishing-tool.
-2. 1A well-drilling tool comprising a lifting cable or rope, a drill-rod, a solid bit removheld on-the lower end of the drill-rod. I

and having an opening therein, and grooves leadin to the opening from the cutting edge of the it.
3. ."A well-drilling tool rovided with a solid bit havin an elongate opening above the cutting e e, I
4. A wel -drilling tool rovided with a solid bit havin an elongate openin above the cutting e ge, and grooves lea ing to the opening from the cutting ed e.
5. A well-drilling tool provided with a solid bit havin an elongated opening above the' cutting e ge, and inclined on thebit and leadin to t the'upper end thereo In testimony whereof l havesigned my name to this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
