EDWIN BYRON GLADlSH, OF HIGGINSVILLE, MISSOURI.
BEE-SMOKER- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 23, 1906.
Application filed March 5, 1906. Serial No. 304,396.
1'0 (1.65 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN BYRON GLAD- ISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Higginsville, in the county of Lafayette and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bee-Smokers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved bee-smoker; and it consists in th e construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the beesmoker, whereb the same is adapted to force the smoke fi'om the smoker by blasts of unheated air and is prevented from drawing the smoke backwardly on the reverse strokes of the bellows, and hence obviates the nuisance of causing the blast-pipe to become gummed up by the adhesion of soot and other products thereto.
A further object of my invention is to provide improved means for regulating the combustion of the material in the smoker.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a bee-smoker embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same with a portion of the damperbroken away.
The bellows 1 is here shown as of the usual construction. The blast-pipe 2 of the bellows projects toward but terminates short of the fire-box 3, in which the combustibles are placed. The fire-box has a removable closure 4 at one end, provided with a handle 5 and further provided with a plurality of airinlet openings 6. On the said closure is pivotally mounted a damper 7, which is semicircular in form and which may be turned to close all of the air-inlet openings but one and may be turned so as to open any desired number of said openings. The rivet 8, which serves as a pivot for the damper, also serves to secure the handle to the damper. At a suitable distance from the' opposite end of the fire-box is a perforated diaphragm 9, which while permitting the escapeof the smoke from the combustibles in the fire-box prevents such combustibles from being blown out of the fire-box by the blasts from the bellows or blower 1. The blast discharged from the blast-tube 2 of the bellows or blower enters the opening 10 in one side of the fire-box and is discharged from the opposite side thereof through a blast-tube 11 and serves, as will be understood, not only to discharge the smoke from the smoker, but also serves to create a draft through the firebox to promote combustion therein. Owin to the fact that the blast-pipe 2 of the bellows or blower terminates short of the opening 10 in the fire-box, air is-not only discharged through the fire-box from the bellows or blower, but additional air is drawn into the opening 10 and forced, together with the blast from the bellows or blower, through the smoker and out through the blast-pipe 11. It will be seen that the blast-pipe 11 is perfectly straight, is attached to one side of the fire-box, and is disposed at right angles thereto. It will also be understood that the blast from the bellows or blower does not pass through the combustibles in the fire-box, and hence does not become heated thereby, with the result that the smoke discharged from the blower is in a blast which is comparatively cold.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described bee-smoker comprising a bellows having a blast-discharge pipe on i and an outlet opening in opposite sides, bemy hand in presence of two subscribing wittWeen the closed end and the perforated dianesses.
phra m, said inlet-openim being opposite r the b last-diseharge pipe oi the bellows and EDWIN BX RON GLADISH' 5 admitting the said blast therefrom, substan- Witnesses:
tially as described. 1 J ULE G. Con,
CHAS. H. GLADISH.
