.The object of our invention is to facilitate the manufacture of shuok mattresses and make beds of corn-husks that will be soft and pliable enough for comfort in warm weather.

Our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of mechanism for feeding in the husks and slitting them into shreds sufficiently fine for making soft mattresses and cheap comfortable beds for the warm season in hot climates.

To enable others to make and use our invention, we will describe itmore fully, referring to the drawing, and to the letters marked thereon. I

We make a broad flat box, A, supported on legs B B.-'- The sides 0 0 form the bearings for the journals for the cylinder D to run in. The cylinderD is provided with three or more rows of thin sharp cutting-knives, e e e e, set spirally in rows, working through between a series of springs, a a a, made of metal, which are secured to the bottom of the box A in the recess 0?, in which the lower feed-roller, E, is placed. Above the roller E is hung the top feed-roller, F, inside of the box, the journals of which are connected to yielding springs f f secured to the sides 0 G of the box A.

The feed-roller E is provided with a bandpulley, g, by which it is driven by a crossband, h, from a corresponding pulley, G, on the rear-side end of the shaft of the knife-cylinder D, which is put in motion and operated by a pinion, I, and gear-wheel J, in which is a crank-handle, K, to turn it with, the cuttin g-cylinder D and springs c e e 6 being cov- By our improved machine, as above described, the husks may be slitted very finely and rapidly and nicely prepared for the purpose.

. What we claim as our invention,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The arrangement and combination of the feed-rollers E and F, the spiral cutting-cylinder D, and the seriesof slitted springs a a a, as constructed, and operating substantially in the manner as and for the purposes herein set forth.
