PAIENT- OFFICE.v
SHAFT-HANGER.. I
No. 833.963. i
Tc all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLEMENT G. HARRING- 'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maplewood, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shaftand exact description, such as willv enable which it appering hadto'the'accompanying drawings, formingmpart of this specification, inwhich-vigure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved shaft-hanger. Fig.'2 -is a vertical sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 isa vertical'sectional view showing a modified form'. Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of a tional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
'This `invention relates to a new `and usefulv improvement in'shaft or ipe hangers of that character wherein thesliaft or pipe passes through a metal plate, such as a web or diaphragm, in steelcar construction.
The Vpurpose of the invention is to utilize the metal tongue produced in forming the assage ofthe pipe or shaft as a supportfor t 'e confining member or bearmg y With this 'object-in view the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, andv hereinafter-described, and afterward pointed out in the claims.' t v In the drawings, 1 indicates the web lor diaphragm,.whicn in car construction is usually a steel plate. The opening yfor'the pipe or shaft is produced byforming an opening and the main body of the plate,v4 the opening beof a size slightly exceeding the the shaft orgpipeto be passed therethrough. To this bent tongue 2 is secured a stirrup memberin the form'of a staple-like rod 3, whose 'ends are hreadegd and4 secured in position by nuts 4, 'orsad bearing may be in the form of a ueshaped strap, havinglatera'l flanges- 'Whichf bolted o'r 'as shown 'e mcuiited in vious that the.
the bearing ist rotate, it is c Specification of Letters atent. Application filed January 8, 1906'. Serial No: 295,156.;
like, the combination ofa pl o ening formed therein through which the` Patented Oct. 23, 1906.
` U-shaped rmember is not clamped tightly thereagainst, suflicient play ,being allowed for rotation.
L-In Figs. 4 and 5 I. have shown `an elongated-l mclined opening formed in the web 1a, the tongue 2a. thereof constituting a shelf and being arranged at the lower edge of the opening. An4 elongated staple 3b is secured to 'this tongue. This construction is useful in connection with rolling shafts constituting partof a door-operating mechanism in gondola cars.
While-,have shown my invention as employed in connection with a' metal plate, such as a web or diaphragm, in steel-car construction, it is obvious that in instances where cast-steel or malleable-iron members are used a lug could'be cast integral with the side-of.v
the opening to-serve as a support for the U bolt or strap. In instances where the part is a commercial rolled shape, such as 'a channel or angle, the web or leg could be formed with v a tongue, and one or 'more J-bolts might be .used instead ofthe U bolt or strap, .especially where it-was desired to reduce the size of the opening.
, vHaving thus described the invention, what I is claimed as new, and desired to be secured l by Letters Patent, isl 1. In a mount for shafts, pipes and vthe like, the combination of a plate having an s aft or similar device extends, the metal re moved from the lopening being bent outwardly to forma tongue, and an open bearing member mounted on said tongue for embracing the device which is tobe supported; substantially'as described.
y2. In a mount lfor shafts, pipes, and the ate having an s aft or similar device extends, the Inet-al rel moved from the opening lbeing bent outwardly to form a tongue which is arranged .above the device extending through said` `opening, and an open bearing depending from said tong'ue to support saiddevice; substantiallyas escribed.
v 3.l The' combination. with a plate 1 pro.-
vided with anl opening, anda tongue 2 extendvo ening formed therein through which the' icok ing at right engee'bo seid plate 'and formed signature, in the presence of two'wvitnesses. by the metal Which-is removed from the plate i this 30th day of December, 1.905.
