ROCKING GRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed Octoberfil, 1904. Serial No. 229,397.
No. 833,934. Patented Oct. 23,190
To all whom ,it may concern.-
one of the bearing-bars, Be it known that I, THOMAS E. MARTIN, a
guide or a bearing 1n which the rock-shaft G is supported. The other end of said rockshaft can be supported in the front of the boiler structure. Consequently the bracketguides I, attached to any or all of the bearing-bars between the two ends of the rockshaft, are open and of the character shown in Fig. 4.. Each guide for the rock-shaft, whether 0 en or closed, is preferablyprovided with s ots, such as the slots 4.. The attaching these slots, brackets can be adjusted accurately upon the bearing-bars. The connecting-bars E are each formed with openin s, and each has attached to it an open liracket. 6. These brackets on the connecting-bars, like the brackets on the bearing-bars, are also provided with slotssuch, for example, as the slots 6 (Shown in Figs. 7 and 8.) Thus the brackets on the connecting-bars can be accurately adjusted, inasmuch as the fastening-bolts extend through the said slots and through the ears e 0n the connecting-bars, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. I The rock-shaft Gris provided with crank-arms g, having crankins g adapted to engage the slots or notches in the brackets c I a resident of the city of Buffalo, county of a certain new and useful Improvement in Rocking Grates, of which the following is a My invention contemplates an improvement on the construction shown and described in my prior application, Serial No. 87,240, filed December 26, 1901; and the object, generally stated, of my present inventhe provision of an improved and highly-efficient rocking grate; and a special provide improved means for rocking or oscillating motion of bolts are inserted through limiting the certain details and features of improvement tending to increase the general efficiency and serviceability of a rocking grate of this particular character.
To the'foregoingandother useful ends my forth and claimed. I In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a rocking grate-embodying the princi les of my invention, only a few of the gratears being shown, certain portions being broken away for convenience of illustration., Fig. 2 is a section on line2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of one of the bars for sup-* porting the bearing-bars Fig. 4 is a side view of one of the bearing-bar's. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the grate shown in Fig. 1, the masonry or brickwork being removed to show the construction of the grate, one of the elements F being removed. Fig. 6 is a transverse section on line 6 6 in Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a section on line 7 7 in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7, showing the. grate-bars rocked as far as they can go in one direction. As thus illustrated, my improved rocking grate comprises the sup orting-barsv A, the transverse bearing-bars mounted in place on said supporting-bars, the grate-bars O, the connecting-bars E, he stationary bars or fillers F, and the rock-shaft G. The said supporting-bars can be secured to the sides of the boiler structure in any suitable or desired manner, but are preferably provided with notches 0,, adapted to receive the ends of the bearing-bars. Said bearing-bars have their upper edges provided with notches b. The bracket-bearing H, preferably located toward the rear of the structure attached to at its ends with knife-edges 0, adapted to engage the notches in the bearing bars. Also with the construction shown each gratebar is provided with a leg 0, adapted to enof the openings in the connectingthis juncture it will be observed that the grate-bars are arranged in three sections and that the members of each section are connected by one of the connectingbars E. These connecting-bars are supported by providing each bar with ears having a pivotal connection with certain of the legs projecting downwardly from the gratebars. In Figs. 7 and 8 three grate-bus in each section are shown provided with the pivotal connections 6 between their legs and the ears on the connecting-bars. In this way the connecting-bars are supported by the grate-bars, and each connecting-bar is adapted to rock all of the grate-bars in unison. By oscillating the rock-shaft G it is evident that all of the rocking grate-bars will be oscillated or rocked upon their knifeedge bearings. The shaker-brackets e serve both as a means for communicating motion from the rock-shaft to the connecting-bars is preferably a closed (Shown in Fig. 4.)
and with such provision the rock-shaft below the and as a stop device for limiting the motion rock-shaft below the grate-bars and extendof the rock Wll b lng parallel 'd connecting-bar and embracing said are just far enough apart to alternately engage the rock-shaft when the grate is rocked or shaken. This is clearly shown in Fig. 8, as in this 3. A grate comprising rocking grate-bars each provided with a depending leg, a connecting-bar movably rock-shaft below the grate-bars and extendwith the rocl -shaft. In
s way the size of the gap or opening in the upper portion of each shaker-bracket determines the extent to which the grate can be rocked.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide an improved rocking grate of a ver efiicient and superior character. With the open shaker-brackets of the character shown in Fig. 4 it is evident that the bearing-bars provided with such brackets can be readily lifted out of the grate without disturbing the rock-shaft.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A grate comprising rocking grate-bars each provided with. a depending leg, a con necting-bar movably engaging said legs, a
4. A grate comprising rocking grate bars each provided with a depending l said connecting bar and embracing said shaft, said shaft being provided with a crank engaging said bracket, and portions of the bracket at each side of the shaft being so spaced in relation thereto that they adapted to alternately limit the movement of the grate-bars.
Signed by me at Buffalo, Erie county, New York, this 17th day of September, 1904.
THOMAS E. MARTIN.
secured to said connecting-bar and embracing said shaft, said shaft being provided with a crank engaging said bracket, and the inner faces of the bracket being so spaced in relation to the shaft that they are adapted to alternately engage the same to limit the movement of the grate-bars.
2. A grate comprising rocking grate-bars Witnesses: each provided with a depending leg, a con- R. G. MARTIN, necting-bar movably engaging said legs, a EMMA A. PELLMAN.
