mi Mr E m -w.
INVENTOR Winn-355s To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that LEDWA D KArLoR, of Allegheny, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Car-Truck Side Frame, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view showing one formof my improved side frame with the sprin -blank connection. Fig. 2 is a partial top p an view on a lar er scale; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blan showing the method of bending. Fig. 4 is a top plan view showing a modified form. Fig. 5 is alongitudinal section of the truck of Fi 4, and Fig. 6 is a similar view showing anot er form.
M invention relates to side frames for cartruc rs, and is designed to provide a frame which may be easily and cheaply made and will be strong and eflicient.
In the drawings, referring to Figs. 1, '2, and 3, I show the frame proper as made from the blank 2, which, is cut in the form shown in Fig. 2 and is then bent along the dotted lines of this figure, so as to form flanges 3 and 4 at the ends and flanges 5 and 6 along the edges of the intermediate body portion. This body portion may be cut out, as shown in Fig" 2, and the cut+out portions may be flanged or not, as desired. In this form 7 represents the spring-blank, and 8 8 the guide-columns, which may be secured by through-bolts and extend between the flanges 5 and 6. The side frame is strengthened by the longitudinal plate or bar 9, which is bent to conform to the lower flanges ,4 and 6 and preferably fills the space between the flanges 3 and 4. These parts may be riveted or secured together in any desirable manner. In this orm the strengthened member 9 is continuous throughout the length of the side frame.
In the form of Figs. 4 and 5 the construction is similar .to that of the first figures except that the strengthening members 9 are separated and extend through only a portion of the flange 6. In this case the side frames are connected by the'transom-channels 1O 10, which may be secured to the side frames in any desirable manner, preferably by riveting the channel-flanges to the flanges 5 and 6, as shown at 11, and also by riveting the bent bracket portions 12 to the webs of the channels. These bracket portions 12 are preferably cut and bent inwardly from the plateforming the side framefandstrengthenmamaaabsente Specification of nette fsratent. l i i nmi nfiied February 16,1905! n w... 245,858. 1 Y
ing-ribs or swelled portions f3'are provided in these brackets.
In the fern-'1 of Fig. 6 the strengthening member 9 is continuous, the web of the plate 2 is left solid, and bent transom mem bers 10 are employed.
The advantages of my" invention result from forming the side-frame body from one plate, which is bent to form the top and bottom flanges throughout the body and pedestal portions, also from the use of the strengthening member, which preferably fills the space between'the pedestal-flanges, and from t ie strength and s'implicityof the structure.
.rairiteiei itlLissa. l
The frame is light, easy to form, and by having the flanged openings makes access easy to the brake hangers, shoes, springs, and other a e of a single parts of the truck. Being 111 sheet, the parts of the truck are few and not liable to getout of order.
The strengthenin bars orplates following the contour of the ower flange or arch-bar for a partor all of its length are for the double purpose of strengthening the sidefra'me and .forming filler-blocks between the flanges or arch-bars at the ends of the side frame.
The to p and bottom flanges or arch-bars of the side frame being joined by a web of metal, the tensile strength of said Web is gained toward carrying the load.
The strengthening member may extend in and be secured to the transom or spring plank, and many variations maybe made in the form and arrangement of the side frame and the other portions of the truck without departing from my invention. I claim- 1. A truck side frame formed of a plate cut to the desired shape with integral bent top and bottom flanges, and longitudinal strengthening members secured between the pedestal-flanges substantially as described.
2. truck side frame formed of a single plate with bent flanges extending along the top and bottom of the Web and parallel pedestal-fl anges, and strengthen ng members filling the space between the pedestal-flanges and extending along the bottom flange of the body; substantially as described.
3. A truck side frame formed of a single plate of metal, with bent top and bottom i 4. A side frame for a car-truck of the diamond type having topend bottom arch bar members formed froma, single sheet of metal and connected' by theinter'venin' integral portion of scribed.
