UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSE PINTO RODRIGUES DE BRITTO, OF RIO DE J ANEIRO, BRAZIL.
SPITTOON OR SANITARY REOEPTACLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
Application filed October 4, 1905. Serial No. 281,291.
'zil, residing at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but
temporarily of Paris, France, (Avenue Victor Hugo 76, 78, 80, 88 have invented a certain new and useful Im Y rovement in Spittoons or Sanitary Reoeptac es, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in spittoons or sanitary receptacles whereby they are rendered more sanitary, and consequently less liable to disseminate infectious germs and so spread disease.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a spittoon of my improved construction, and Fig. 2 is a Vertical section therethrough on line 90 y of Fig. 1.
The appliance comprises a preferably bellmouthed vessel or receiver a, mounted upon a support which may conveniently take the form of a semicircular column 0. The receiver a is preferably provided with a perforated gutter or the like 6, formed or mounted thereon in any suitable position, such as the upper interior rim of the vessel a, whereby water or other cleansing or disinfecting fluid may be circulated and caused to impinge upon the interior surface of the receiver a. A supplypipe i, having a cock or tap f, is provided for the supply of water to the gutter b or interior of the receiver, and said cock or tap may be actuated throu h the medium of a foot-pedal or foot-board g and lever e and which may be controlled by a spring k, or other convenient means of operating the stop-cockf may be employed.
The lower part of the receiver (1 opens into a si hon-pipe g, which in turn communicates wit a waste-pipe h, by means of which the contents of the spittoon are conveyed away. For greater convenience the front of the receiver may be provided with an opening a,
and plugs g may be fitted in the siphon-pipe g for cleansing, draining, or other purposes.
The user on approaching the appliance places his foot'upon the foot-treadled, therey operating the stop-cock f to cause water to flow into the gutter b and impinge through openings therein onto the interior surface of the receiver a, over which it flows freely, and as the user, say, expectorates thereinto carries such eXpectoration away in a moist condition into the siphon-pipe g, from which it is swept by the rush of water into the wastepipe h. On releasing the foot-treadle or the like the spring 7c thereof returns the latter to its normal position, shutting off the supply of water, only allowing sufiicient to flow into the siphon to act as a water seal, and so prevent the passa e of noxious germs or the like back through t e pipe h, and the appliance regains its normal condition.
What I claim is In combination with a vertical column having at the interior thereof a dischargepipe, of an inverted bell-shaped vessel supported at the uppermost terminal of the column and in communication with the discharge-pipe and having an entirely open top and front, the latter terminating ap I'OXlmately near the bottom of said vesse said vessel further provided with a rim at \the top thereof forming a perforated gutter terminating at opposite sides of the front opening, and means for supplyin a cleansing fluid through the gutter to t e interior of the vessel.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOSE PINTO RODRIGUES DE BRIT'IO.
