Description

Toa/ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. MoRRow,
a citizen ofthe United- States, and a resident of Stockton, county of San Joaquin, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Tandem Steamv Engines; and do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the characters of A following specification and claims.
In the drawings .similarfcharacters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevationof the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on a line :l: of Fig. 2.
1 designates the cylinder, provided with a division-wall 2, which divides said cylinder into two chambers 3 and 4. At each end of said cylinder and at both sides are-slots 5, lying parallel to each other, and 6 re resents similar slots in the top of said cylin er.
7 is a piston working in the chamber 3, and 8 is asimilar piston working in the chamber 4 in a direction similar to the piston 7.
9 is anoblong driving-rod connected to the pistons 7 and 8 and extending through the slots and along the sides of the cylinder 1. 10 represents guides arranged on the cylinder 1 to regulate the movement of the drlvingrod 9. Y
11 represents exhaust-portskin the chambers 3 and 4. 0
12 is a shaft journaled beneath the cylinder 1 about the center thereof, onthe ends of which are secured cog- wheels 13 and 14, sald cog-wheels being provided cogs onone side only, those on one being disposed opposite to those on the other.
15 and 16 are cog-rails on each side of the cylinder 1, secured to the driving-rodi), the cogs on said rods coacting with the cogs on the wheels 13 and 14, those on the rail 15 running Speeicato'n-ofLetters Patent.

slide 19. On the top of the valve-seat 18 is a steam-chest 20, from which oriiices 21 and 22 lead to the chambers 3 and 4, respectively.
he slide 19 is secured to the driving-rod 9 by rods 23, said rods working in the slots 6.' In
the slide 19 is an orifice 24, which coincides with the orifice 21 when the piston 7 is in its inner position, and is a similar orifice which coincides with the orifice 22 when the piston 8 is in its inner position.
The operation is as follows: The steampasses throughhthe orifices 21 and 24 into thev chamber 3 and expands and drives the piston 7 backward, which action 'pulls the piston 8 inward and causes the orince 25 to coincide with the orifice 22,and then the steam'exhausts from the chamber 3, and' new steam passes into the chamber 4 and expands and drives the piston 8 outward, pulling the piston 7 and its parts inward, &c. The cog-wheel arrangement 13 14 1'5 16 drives the fiy-wheels ciprocate and the rail 15 performs a like action' asthe rail 16, thus giving continuous I have thus produced a double-cycle engine for steam which will produce more power than the oldstyle engines.
I have now entered into la detailed description of thepresent yand preferred embodlment of my invention. I do not desire, however, to be understood as co myself .to such speciiic detail, as such changes and modifications may be made in ractlce as fairly fall within the scope of my c aims. I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A 1. 'In an engine la cylinder 'provided with a division-wall dividing said cylinder into two chambers, a piston working in each chamber said pistons being connected by an oblong driving-rod extending through and along the Vsides of said cylinder, slots in the top of said Ibl Y cylinder at both ends, a slide-valve arranged an oblong dri above seid cylinder with rods connecting the valve-rod to said driving-rodand working in said slots, and a, steam-chest arranged vabove said slide-valve, said valve admitting steam alternately into each of said chambers, as set forth.
2. In an engine a cylinder provided with a; division-wall dividing said cylinder into two chambers, a piston Working in each chamber, -rod conn'ectedto said pistons'and extendmg through and along the sides of said c linders, a shaft journaled beneath said cylmder'about the center'thereof, cog-Wheels arranged on each end of said rails ooaoting with the under side of one `of 2o said cog-wheels end the other with the u er side of the other oog-Wheel, as set forth y herein.
In' testimony whereof I ax my signature v in presence of two witnesses.
