Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
Application filed June 28, 1905. Renewed July 24, 1906- Sorial No. 827,679.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to advertising-devices.
The objects of the invention are, first, to convert a roll of toilet-paper into an advertising medium, and, second, to provide means, in connection with a holder for a roll of toilet-paper, whereby as the paper is drawn from said roll an advertisement will be imered by means of pressed thereon.
My invention consists of the various features, combinations of features, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawin%, in which my invention is fully illustrated, igure 1 is a side view, partly in section and with one side thereof removed, of ah older fora roll of toiletpaper embodying my invention, also sh owing a roll of toilet-paper in operative. position therein; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the holder,showing the roll and operative parts of the device in elevation.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates a holder for a roll of toilet-paper, and 2 a roll of toilet-paper revolubly mounted therein, so that it maybe drawn off, as desired, for use.
As shown, the holder 1 is made in the formof a closed box or casing and is provided with a removable side 3 to render the interior of the holder accessible for assembling the operative parts thereof and also for placing the rolls of paper therein as they are used. The holder 1. may be secured to any convenient support by means of screws 4, inserted through the back thereof into said support or in any other desired manner.
The roll of paper preferably consists of a continuous web and is designed to be seva suitable knife or cutter 5, secured to the exterior of the box or casing 1 and being preferably provided with. a serrated or saw edge. Any other desired or approved form of cutter may, however, be employed.
The advertising matter is impressed upon the web, being preferably embossed thereon, by means of combined feed and embossing rollers 6 and 7, mounted in suitable position in the box or casing 1. As shown, said rollers are revolubly mounted one above the other,
beneath the roll of paper 2, the up per r01 6 being the platen-roll, and the lower roll 7 the impression or embossing roll. The web of paper (designated by a) passes from the roll 2 bet-ween the rollers 6 and 7 and thence throu h a suitable delivery-opening 8, provided in t e side of the casing. The sevdirectly 'ering knife or cutter will of course be located with reference to the delivery-opening 8.
Formed on the surface of the impression or embossing roller 7 are raised characters 9, corresponding to the advertisement which it is desired to impress in the web of paper a. For convenience in manufacture and to insure requisite strength, rigidity, and durability the outer position of the roller 7, in which said characters are formed, as also the characters 9 themselves, are made of suitable cast metal, preferably aluminium, and to secure desired lightness the position of said roller 7, containing the characters 9, is made in the form of a shell 11, which is secured to an inner wooden core 12, secured to the shaft 13, on which said roller is supported.
To secure the desired embossing action of the characters 9, the surface of the platenro1ler6 is made yielding. Said roller preferably consists of an inner wood on core 14 and an outer rubber covering 1 5.
To provide for adjusting the tension of the rollers 6 and 7 upon the web of paper a and also the strength of the impression of the characters9, said rollers 6 and 7 are preferably adjustable toward and from each other. As shown, the roller 7 is mounted in fixed bearings and the roller 6 in adjust able bearing-blocks 16, which are fitted to and freely movable toward and from the roller 7 in suitable guide slots or ways 17 formed in brackets 18 on the inner sides of the box or casing 1. The roller 6 is urged yieldingly toward the roller 7 by means of springs 19, which bear upon the tops of the bearing-blocks 16, the tension of which is adapted to be adjusted by means of screws 20, threaded through the tops of the brackets 18.
Rotation is adapted to be imparted to the impression-roller 7 by means of a crank 21, applied to the end of the shaft of said roller, and in order to insure against sticking and stopping of the roller 6 the shafts of the rollers 6 and 7 are preferably connected by gears 22 and 23, secured thereto. Preferably, also, the rollers 6 and 7 are made of different sizes, so that the roller 6 Will receive the impressions of the characters 9 on the roller 7 p the life of said roller 6.
vertisement thereon;
A further advanta e of forming the char' actors 9 on a shell is 5m with this construction the shell may be quickly removed andreplaced when it is desired to .In Fig. 2 the letters a represent the impression of the characters 9 on the roller 7, embossed on the web of pa er a.
Obviously turning the ro lers 6 and 7 in the proper directions will operate to draw the web of pa er a from the roll'2 and to deliver it through the opening 8 and at the same time to emboss the characters 9 on said web.
I claim as my invention 1. An advertising device, com rising a roll of toilet-paper,- a frame or hol er in which said roll is revolubly supported, impressionrollers between which the web of paper passes from said roll, gears which connect the shafts of said im ression-rollers and a crank for r0- tating sai rollers.
2. -Anadvertising device com rising a roll of toilet-paper, a frame or hol er in which said roll 1s revolubly sup orted, impressionrollers of different sizes etween which the web of paper passes from said roll, gears which-connect the shafts of said impressionrollers and a crank applied to the shaft of one of said rollers;
3. An advertising device, com rising a roll of toilet-paper, a frame or holder in which said roll of aper is revolubly supported, impression-r0 lers between which said web of paper passes from said roll, means to adjust the contact of said rollers, gears whichcon- .nect the shafts of said rollers and a crank for I rotating said rollers.
