METHOD oF emsossme PRINTED MATTER.
rammed Oct. 1-6, 1906.
To all whom it may concern;
' Be it known that I, Join EDGAR HUDSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Havana, in the county of Sargent and State of N orth-Dakota, have invented a new and useful Method of Embossing -Printed Matter,
of which the following is a specification This invention relates'to bossing printed matter.
The ob'ect of the invention is in a ready,-
-simple, t oroughly-feasible, and practical manner and without the use of metal plates for the purpose to emboss printed work of any character- With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the method of embossing printed work, as will be Y hereinafter fully'describedand claimed.
of the die.
the first-named chase.
In the accompanying drawings, formin a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embossing-form. Fig. 2 1s a similarview showing the procedure of making the embossing-die' Fig. is a' perspective detail view The embossing-types are, by preference,
made of metal, with the letters and characters in intaglio. All of the letters of the alphabet, the figures, punctuation-marks, characters,
borders, spaces, quads, and the like are made type-high, so that when locked in a chase they will present a perfectly smooth and even surface.
The mode of embossing under the presentmethod is as follows: After a job has been printed with the ordinary type the chasecontaining the embossing-type is substituted therefor and is secured in exactly the same position upon the bed as that occupied by To a sheet of heavy paper 2, cardboard, or the like that has been previously firmly secured to the platen by any suitable adhesive is applied an emboss- 'ing compound 3, such as is commonly em I ployed by printers in making stereotypes and other dies, and the press is then closed, thereby forcing the compound into the depressions a method of em and the chase con- Application filed January 10, 1906. Serial No. 295,469.
of the embossing-type, die 4. The press is then opened, and the die is allowed to dry. Owing to the fact that both the chase containing the embossing-ty e and the die. are rigidly fixed relatively to the bed of the-press and to the platen thereof, it will be seen that the type and die willhe caused positively to register, so that'the production of perfect embossed work is secured. After the die has become hardened the sheets of the printed job are successively laid over the die with the printing characters in register with the cameo characters thereon, and when the press is closed the aper will be forced into the depressions of t 1e embossingtype and thereby eflect the desired ornamentation;
It will be seen from the foregoing description that, while the procedure herein defined is simple, cheap, and ready of execution, it will be thoroughly efficient for the purpose producing there-by a I designed and may be carried into effect without the necessity of the employment of 'skilled or special'workmen for the purpose.
Furthermore, a font'of embossing-type may be used indefinitely for ornamentin'g'work of any'character.
1.- The herein-described method of embossing, which consists in setting up a facsimile of a printed job with typ intaglio and disposed in the same order as the type used for printing the job, securing the set-up type to the bed of a press, securing a sheet of suitable material to the platen of the press,'depositing a body of embossing com-' ositionon the sheet, closing the press to force the compoundinto the 'intaglio type .to form a die having relief type, allowing the die to harden, placing a sheet, reviously printed, on the die with the printed characters theree having characters in on registering with the relief type, and then embossin it.
2. The erein-described method of embossing, which consists in setting up a facsimile of a printed job with type having characters in intaglio and disposed in the same order as the type used for printing the job, securing the set-up type to the bed of a press, arranging a body of embossing composition on the platen of the press, closing the press to force the eoni- I Intestimony that I clailn the feregoing as pound into the intag-lio type t-o forin a die; my ownI have hereto aflixedmy-signaturein aving relief type, {allowing the composition the presence Of two witnesses.
