EUGENE" F? M. 01 MONTPELIER; INDIANA;
DEVICE FOTR' CONNECTING; RODS- naseaese:
T0 =all whcm, it may concern: I
Beritknownqthat I, EUGENE-F. HELM, a. citizen of the. United. States, residing atMontpeli'er, in. the county of Blackford and State of Indiana:, have invented certain. new. and useful Improvements in Devices for ConnectingRods, of which the following isa specification.
The great majorityof the devicesin' commonluse for connecting-rods require that the endsofthe rods be provided with ahead, and this feature has been. found to add very materially to the. cost. of applying the devices.
The object. ofrthe present. inventionhas accordingly been to provide animproved-rodconnectingdevice by means.- of which rods: canbe quickly and.rigidly. connected just as they areturned, from the rolling-mill and without the extra expense ofproviding their ends with .heads.
INhile this device has been especially, designed for connecting the ends of the pullrods employed for transmitting power from a centralso-urce toa plurality of oil-wells, it must be understood that I do notlimit myselfto this use, since it maybe employed with equal facility for connectingrods, tubes, steel cables, or similar. articles wherever such: adevice is needed.
F orafull description oftthe invention and the merits. thereof. and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of: construction of the meansfor: effecting. the result reference is to-be'hadto the following description and accompanying drawings, in:which Figure 1 is ailongitudinal sectional view through the connecting-clamp. Fig. 2 is a transverse. sectional view through the same, and Fig.3.is a detail erspective view showing the clamping mem ers when taken apart.v
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following-description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the. same reference characters.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate the two similar clamping members which form the body of the rod-connecting device. Each of the clamping members 1 and 2 is provided on its inner face with a longitudinal groove or depression 3, which is shown as being approximately semicircular in cross section and which is adapted to receive a portion of the rods to be connected. A transverse projection or ear 4 projects from the inner face of each of the clamping members 1 and 2 at one end thereof. These projections 4 are perfo- Specification of.L'etters Patent.

rated to receive theends 5 of therods, which: are connected and preferably'takethe form.
of arches, as shown in the. drawings. The innenfaces of-the arches form a continuation of the sides of-the grooves 3, while the outer sides of the archesare spaced from the-edges of the clamping members, a seen at 6. It will also be" observed that threaded stems 7 project from the-crowns ofthe arches orz-the heads of'the' projections 4. The opposite ends of the" clamplng members 1 and 2 to those'provided with the projections 4-are formed withtrans verse openings 8 and are out away=to form: al recess or cavity 9. The: clamping members" are 1 preferably enlarged around. the openings 8, as seen atlO.
passed through the openings 8 inzthe opposlte clamping member. Nuts 11: are thenscrewed upon the. threaded stems 7 and theclamping members 1 and-2 forced tightly to? gether, so as to take asecure grip upon therods and form a; rigid connection between; beseen that thecavity'9 them. It will thus at one endof each of theclamping members forms a housingfor the projection; or 'aI'Oh i upon-the opposite clamping member and enables the two clamping membersto bebrought closely togethen for a secure engagementwith the rods.
Having-thus described the invention, what is claimedias new is 1. .In' adevice of; the character; described,
the combination-of twomembers to be connected,.a pair of clamping members fitting upon opposite sides of. the-adjacent ends of themembers to-be connected,- a projection; from one of the clampingmembers provided;
with an opening to'receive theendof-one of; the members to be connected, the-opposite. clamping member. beingprovided -with a cavity to receive said projection, means for securing a connection between the clamping members and the opposite member to be connected, and means for forcing the clamping members into a close engagement with the members to be connected.
2. In 'a device of the character described, the combination of two members to be connected, clamping members fitting upon opposite sides of the adjacent ends of the members to be connected, a projection upon one IIO' of the clamping members provided with an opening to receive the end of one of the members to be connected, a threaded stem upon the head of said projection, the. opposite clamping member being provided with an opening through which the threaded stem passes, means for securing a connection between the clamping members and the oppo site member to be connected, and a nut o erating with the threaded stem to force t e clamping members into a close engagement with the members to be connected.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of two members to be connected, a pair of clamping members fitting upon op osite sides of the adjacent ends of j the mem ers to be connected, said clamping members'being provided on their inner faces with longitudinal grooves into which the members being connected fit, an arch spanning the groove in one of the clamping members and forming an opening to receive the end of one of the members to be connected, the opposite clamping member being provided with a cavity to receive the arch, means for securing a connection between the clamping members and the opposite member to be connected, and means for forcing the clamping members into a close engagementwith the members being connected.
4. Ina device of the character described, the combination of two members to be connected, a pair of clamping members fitting upon op osite sides of the adjacent ends of the mem ers to be connected, said clam ing members being provided on their inner aces with groovesto receive the members being connected, an arch spanning the groove in one ofthe clamping members and formin an opening to receive the ends of the mem ers to be connected, a threaded stem projecting from the crown of the arch, the opposite clam ing member being formed with an opening t ough which the threaded stem passes and a cavity to receive the arch, and a nut co- 0 erating with the threaded stem to force t e clamping members into a close engagement with the members to be connected.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of two members to be connected, a pair of clamping members fitting upon opposite sides of the adjacent ends of the members to be connected, a projection at one end of each of the clamping members,
engagement with the members to be connected.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination of two members to be connected, clamping members fitting upon opposite sides of the adjacent ends of the members to be connected, a projection upon one end of each of the clamping members, said projections being provided with openings through which the members to be connected are passed, a threaded stem projecting from the head of each projection, the opposite end of each of the clamping members being provided with an opening through which the threaded stem upon the opposite clamping member is passed and also with a cavity to receive the projection upon the opposite clamping member, and nuts coo erating with the threaded stems to force t e clamping members into a close engagement with the members to be connected.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination of two members to be connected, a pair of clamping members fitting upon opposite sides of the adjacent ends of the members to be connected, said clam ing members being provided on their inner aces with grooves in which the members to be connected fit, an arch spanning the groove at one end of each of the clamping members and forming openings through which the members to be connected are passed, threaded stems projecting from the crowns of the arches, the opposite end of each of the clamping members being provided with an opening to receive the threaded stem'projecting from the opposite clamping member, and nuts cooperating with the threaded stems to force the clamping members into a close engagement with the members to be connected.
In testimony whereofI afiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
