To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsrAVUs TROXLER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-Wheels and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to I which same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference 'marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My present invention has reference generally to improvements in trolley-wheels and guards for electric railways; and the invention relates more particularly to that class of trolley-wheels and guards for electric railroads which derive their motive power from overhead feed-wires or conductors.
The principal purpose of this invention is to provide a novel and simply-constructed trolley-wheel and guard therefor, the guard being operatively connected and rotating With the wheel proper, whereby the parts have been reduced to a minimum, and are less likely of becoming disarranged and inoperative.
0 A further object of this invention is to provide the wheel proper with a series of yielding fingers directly connected with the wheel and normally having portions which extend beyond the periphery of the wheel and move on opposite sides of the wire, so as to act as guards to prevent accidental displacement of the trolley-wheel from the wire, said fingers yielding against contact with the cross or supporting wires or when brought in contact 0 wit the crossovers or turnouts in the feedwire without any damage to the various parts of the wheel and the cross-wires and devices placed in the main feed-wire.
A further object of the resent invention 4 5 is to provide a trolley-whee and novel guard therefor which will not interfere with the forward or rearwardrolling engagement of the trolley-wheel against the feed-wire, the guard or fingers of the Wheel being yieldable in either direction and the parts being readily it appertains to make and use the and quickly adjusted in their operative relation with the feed-wire or conductor.
The construction of the device is such that although the trolley-wheel is guarded upon the feed-wire or conductor still there is no danger of the mechanisms and device injuring the cross-wires or supports or becoming disarranged by contact with said cross-wires or supports, as will hereinafter more fully apear,
With the various objects of my present invention in view the same consists in the novel trolleywheel and guard therefor to be hereinafter more fully set forth and, further more, this invention consists in thevarious arrangements and combinations of the de vicesand parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be described in detail in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim,which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a trolleywheel and novel guard therefor embodying the principles of the present invention, and Fig. 2 is anedge View of the same; Fig. 3 is a tranverse section of the wheel and guard detached from the harp or wheel-carrier, said section being taken through the wheel, and a pair of oppositely-placed and yielding guards or fingers which are pivotally connected with the wheel, certain connectingsprings between the several fingers and the sides of the trolley-wheel being shown in elevation. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the said trolley-wheel and guards or yielding fingers, the parts being represented in their operative relation with a feed-wire or support and go one set of the yielding fingersof the wheel being shown in yielding engagement with a cross-wire or support.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above-described 5 views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a complete trolley-wheel and guard therefor embodying the principles of this invention. 10o
arranged a trolley-wheel 10, provided in its "periphery with a channel or groove 11,
adapted to be placed against the feed-wire or conductor 2 in the usual and well-l nown manner. The said trolley-wheel 10 is provided near its marginal peripheral edges with any desired number of pins or screws 12, the endportions of which project laterally from the opposite sides or flat faces of the said trolley-wheel 10, substantially as shown in Fig. 3 .of the drawings. Said projecting ends of the pins or screws 12 are also preferably shouldered, as at 13, and are provided with the screw-threaded end portions 14 for the reception of a washer 15 and nut 16, substantially as illustrated. Pivotally arranged upon each laterally-projecting portion of said pins or screws and held in place by a washer 15 and nut 16 is the lower perforated end portion 18 of a guard or finger 17, the upper part 19 of each guard or finger extending beyond the marginal peripheral edge of the trolley-wheel 10.
In 'the lower end portion 18 each guard or finger 17 has a perforation 20 or other suita'ble fastening means, to which is attached the one end portion of a coiled spring 21, theopposite end portion of each spring being attached to the body of the wheel 10 by means of a post or pin 22 or other suitable fastening device. v
'Thus it willbe seen from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings that each side face of the said'trolley-wheel 10 is provided with any desired number of guards or fingers 17, which in their normal initial positions are caused by the tension of their respective springs 21 to extend in radial lines from the marginal peripheral edges of the wheel 10, but any one pair of which as it is brought in contact with the cross-wire 3 or the fixtures, such as crossovers or turnouts, carried by the wires, will easily yield against the obstruction thus presented, as clearly indicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, without interfering with the usefulness of the trolley-wheel and its guard. As soon as the cross-wire or other obstructing fixture is passed the tensions of the distended coils of the springs 21 will immediately return the two yielding guard arms or fingers 17 to their initial and normally radially extending positions at the sides of the wheel.
owing Fromthe foregoing description and from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings it will be seen that the present invention provides a very simple and effectively-operating means for guarding a trolleywheel upon the'feed-wire or conductor against accidental displacement, and the construction of the parts is such that no injury to the cross-wires or supports for the feed-wire or to the parts of the trolley-guard is possible. Furthermore, it will be clearly evident that to the fact that the guard arms or fingers are attached to the wheel proper and rotate with the same in the majority of instances the uppermost guards or fingers will not come in engagement with the cross-wires, their ends passing either directly in front or back of the cross-wire without coming i-n-contact with the same and reducing such contacting of these parts to a minimum.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with a trolley-wheel carrier, of a wheel carried by said carrier, a series of posts extending laterally from the opposite sides of said wheel, a radially-extending guard arm or finger extending from each post and rotatable with the wheel, and means connected with each uard-arm to produce the normally radial relation of each guard-arm, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with a trolley-wheel carrier, of a wheel carried by said carrier, a series of posts extending laterally from the opposite sides of said wheel, a radially-extending guard arm or finger pivotally arranged upon each post and rotatable with the wheel, and means "connected with each guard-aim to produce the normally radial relation of each guardarm, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with a trolley-wheel carrier, of a wheel carried by said carrier, a series of posts extending laterally from the opposite sides of said wheel, and a guard arm or finger pivotally arranged upon each post and rotatable with the wheel, and a spring between the lower end portion of each guard arm or finger and the body of the wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

The herein-described trolley-wheel and guard, comprising a wheel having laterallyextending posts upon its opposite sides, a guard arm or finger pivotally arranged upon each post, and means for normally causing said guard lines from the marginal peripheral edge or said wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The herein-described trolley-wheel and guard, comprising a wheel having laterallyextending posts upon its opposite sides, a guard arm or finger pivotally arranged upon each post, and means for normally causing arms or fingers to extend in radial said guard arms or fingers to extend in radial lines from the marginal peripheral edge of said Wheel, consisting of a coiled spring for each guard arm or fin er, each spring having one end connected Wit a guard arm or fin er and its opposite end secured to the body of the Wheel, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
