Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1906.
1908. Serial No. 177.624.
To au whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW L. Weis, a citizen of the United States, residin Y at To? ledo, in the county of Lucas and tate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Files; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to wliicliit appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which pivotally or flexibl 55 as at 6, by means of strips of c loth liied to the niar iris of the ends and sides. he sides and en s may be secured in rectanform a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an indexed or numbered case foriiling letters, catalogues tariffs, orders, invoices, and other papers an documents, and is designed to furnish a cheap, simple, durable, and convenient device for the purposes mentioned which may be folded and packed into small space for storage and shipment, in which the papers contained in the file, regardless of their number, are held constantly in u right or vertical position and readily accessilile, and in which the alphabetical or numerical divisions of the case may be adjusted to any desired ca acity. I attain these objects by means of the (Ifevices and arran ement of zarts hereinafter described an shown, an f illustrated in the ac companying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional elevation of my filing-case assembled ready for use; Fig. 2, a l' die elevation of my case knocked down for storage or transportation; Fi 3, a perspective view of the guidewire an its holder, hereinafter referred to, detached, part of the holder being broken away; Fig. 4, a central vertical sectional elevation of m case, taken at a right angle to the view in `ig. 1; and Fig 5 a diagrammatic top planl view of the sides and ends of my case lpartly folded.
Li e numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the drawin In the drawings, 1 1 are tlii ends, 2 2 the sides, 3 the to and 4 the bottom, of my case. In practice I ave constructed these parts of stout strawboards reinforced Iat the 'oints and corners with cloth. The top has a ange 3, which fits over the to margin of the case, andthe bottom has a iiange 4, which receives the bottom mar in of the case. Each of the sides 2 2 in divi: ed vertically into two' gular relation by means of staples or fasteners 7, passing through the bottom rim 4- and through the bottoni margin of the folding side pieces 2, the staples being` clenched on tlie inside of the case as indicated in Fig. 1. A staple 7 passes tlirou 1h each of the fourfolding side pieces, and w en these staples are secured to the upwardly-projecting rim 4 the sides and ends are firmly held open in rectangular relation.
8 8 are two guide-wires or slide-wires extending between the ends near the bottom of the box. These slides 8 are detachably secured in position as follows: A thin stri of sheet ineta19 is doubled lengthwise, as illlustrated in Fie. 3, and is provided with holes, as at 10. Tlie ends of a stifi' wire 8, bent int-o U shape, as illustrated in Fig. 3, are 'passed through the holes l0, so that the connecting 'portion of the two wires lies between the` two sides of the doubled stri' 9. ll is a small light block of wood glue to one end of the box at its bottom and midway of its width. In this block are two holes or sockets 12, coincidin with the holes 10. The bottom of the en wall opposite the block 12 is slipped into the groove of the piece 9, as illustrated in Fig. l, holding the piece 9 firmly in position, and at the same time the extremities of the wires 8 are slipped into the holes 12 of the block 11, and thus the guide-wires or slide wires 8 8 are secured at opposite ends slightly above the bottom box.
13 13 are sheets of stout stiff pa er having at bottom two holes through whic i the wires 8 8 pass. These papers may be divided into alphabetical or numerical or other divisions by securingr to the up er margin of the sheets at suitab e interva s indicatiii f-tabs 14, which mark the groups into wliic i the sheets 13 are divided.
equal parte the meeting edges of which are 15 is e. stout binders board doubled at its middle into inverted-V shape, each of the two extremities having two holes therethrough, through which holes pass the wires 8 8.
When my filing-case is packed for shi ment, the leaves V13 are laid flatwise in tfie bottom of the box. 'lhe sides and ends are folded flat in parallel relation, as indicated in Fig. 5, and laid upon the top of the folded leaves. The wire 8, piece 9, and piece 15, together with the clips, are laid u on the top of the folded ends and sides, and) the cover is placed with the marirn of its downwardlyturned rim against tie margin of the u.- wardly-turneiv rim of the bottom. Tie parts thus assembled are of the thickness merely of the top and bottom taken together and form a flat compact. package. lWhen the case is to be set up for use, the ends of the wires 8 8 are passed through the holes 10 in the piece 9 and through the piece 15, the sheets 13 are strung onto the ends of the wires, the sides and ends are 'o ened into rectangular position and the en( s of the wires are inserted into the holes 12 in the block 11, the bottom of the opposite end of the box is slipped into the groove of the bent piece 9, the bottom of the sides and ends is slipped into the upturned flange of the bottom, thel folding parts of the sides are connected with the flange of the bottom by means of the fasteners 7, and the cover is put in lace. The device is now ready for use.
3y slipping the two legs of the part 15 toward the sheets 13 the latter are held in compact form and vertical, or nearly so. As papers are filed between the lettered and numbered sheets 13 and as their bulk increases the part l5 is moved back from time to time, as occasion may demand, until the box is full. It will be seen that the horizontal adjustability of the part 15 provides for always keeping the papers in compact form and in upright position, so that the files may at any point be readily reached and inspected.
Having described my invention and its operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
npturned rim ada 1. In a filing-case, sides and ends which flexibly connected together and adapted fold-in parallel relation, a bottom having ted to receive the bott margin of the si( es and ends, said bott margin of the sides and ends and said turned rim having apertures therethroi for fastening devices, and means for det: ably7 securing the bottom margin of the si and ends to said upturncd rim through s apertures.
2. A filing-case comprising in its const tion ends, 4sides which are centrally vertic divided, fiexible connections between meeting margins of the divided porti flexible connections between the outer v cal margins of the divided portions and vertical margins of the ends, a bottom ing an upturned rim, means for detach engaging the said rim with the bottom o vertical walls of the case, removable sep: ing-sheets slidably secured within the and means slidabl secured within the for supporting sai( sheets in adjusted right osition. v
3. iii a filin ,-case, a bottom having a: wardlyturnec rim, a removable top h1 a downwardly-turned rim, sides and adapted to be folded into parallel rel: a series of dividing-sheets in the box, r for slidably supporting said dividing-s within the box 1n upright position, com with means for detachably fastening th tom margins of the sides and ends to tl turned rim of the bottom, the dimensii said folding sides, ends, sheets, supp` means and fastening devices being suc they may be collectively inclosed with space bounded by the meeting rims of t and bottom.
In testimony whereof I affix my sigi in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW L. Wl
