Application filed June 12, serial N0.
proved term ot' rheostat for special use 1n connection with small dynamo-electric machines and for similar purposes.
In the construction ot ian-motors and other small dynamo-electric machines it is often desirable that the starting and speed-regulating devices be located within the base of the machine, and it is the purpose of my invention to. rovide a rheostat that may be convenient y employed in such locations.
My invention-is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Figure l of which is a View in bottom plan of a motor provided with a rheostat constructed in accordance therewith. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section 'through the base of the motor and in side elevation of therheostat shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section through the rheostat and a portion of1 the base of the motor. Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of a portion of the rheostat, and .F ig. 5 grammatic view of the circuit connections of the4 motors.
Secured to the under side et the base 1 of a motor 2 by means of screws 8 and 4 is a' circular block 5, of orcelain or other suitable insulating materia, to which a conducting switch-arm 6 is pivotally secured by means :of a bolt 7. The switcli-arrn. is adapted to engage near its middle a conducting-strip 8, that is secured to the insulating-block by means of screws 9 and l() and at its outer end contact-terminals 1], 12, 1 3, and 14, a clip 15 being connected to the terminal 14 and forming one terminal of' the rllcostat'. Y
`The periphery of the block 5 is provided with flanges 16 17 1S 1f), etc., alternate ones of which occur on opposite edges, thc flanges beingl arranged in this manner for the )urpose of facilitating moldingV of the perce ain. On the cylindrical surface of the block bvetween the flanges a resistance-conductor 20 is wound theaterminals of which are connected with contact- terminals 12 and 14,v
is a diarespectively, and a point intermediate the terminals with contact-terminal 13, the leads being locatedin notches 21, 22, and 23 in flanges at the peri hery of the block.
An insulating-bushing 24 is screwed in the base 1 et the motor for the purpose of protecting the conductors 25 and 26, which' connect terminal- clips 15 and 27, respectively, with the supply-circuit, a corresponding a crture 2S being provided in the porcelain b ook, through which the conductors pass. The terminals of the motor 2 are connected, respectively, with conducting-strip 8 and terminal-clip 27, as shown in F ig. -5, and the amount of resistance in the circuit of the motor is regulated by varying the position of the switch-arm 6. The block 5 is provided with spaced apertures 29,in which screws 30 may be located when it is desired t0 secure the base of the mot-or to a vertical wall or in any other suitable position.
claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a motor having a hollow base, of a rheostat located in said base and comprising an insulating-block having periphera edge flanges, a resistance-conductor located on the periphery ofthe block between the Hanges, and a switch mechanism A connected with the resistance-conductor and located on the surface of the block.
2. The combination with a motor havin y a hollow base, oi'v a rheostat located in said base and colnprising an insulating-block having integral langes projecting from its peripheral edges, a resistance-conductor located on the periphery of the block between the flanges, switch mechanism located on the surface of the block and connected with the resistance-conductor, and means for fastening said block to a supporting-base.
3. A rhcostat comprising an insulatingblock having flanges projecting from its periphery, the flanges on opposite edges being staggered, a resistance-conductor located in the edge-of the block, and switch mechanism connected with the resistance-conductor and located on the surface of the block.
4. Thev combination with a motor having a hollow base, of a rhcostat comprising an lnsulating-block, a resistance-conductor located on the periphery of the block, contactterminals connected to the resistance-conductor and secured to the face of the block,
IOO
a movable switch member pivotally secured block, andswitch mechanism locd oh the I to Jthe block for engaging said terminals, and' surface of the block. means for fastening said block within the In testimony whereof I have hereunto submotorbese. scribed my name this 6th day of June, v1905.` 5 '5;. he combination 'of a motor having a y y hollow base and a reguleting-rheostat therei FRED R' KUNKEL for that is located within the hollow base, Witnesses: comirising an insiilatingl-bloek, a re'sistenee-- Eo.
