ROLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 9, 1906.
Application filed August 23, 1905. Serial No. 275,491.
To [ti/Z whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID L. EYNON and SAMUEL SHERIFF, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Rolls, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in rolls for the production of bars, having alternate projections and depressions on one or more of its faces, said bars being especially adapted for use as tie rods in concrete structures. Where two or more of the'faces have the projections or depressions, the projections on one face will be illustrating modifications of our improvement; and Fig. 7 is an elevation of a bar formed by the rolls shown in Figs. 1 2, and 3. In the practice of our invention the rolls are formed with radially-projecting ribs 1, having their inner ends beveled, as at a, to form a wall of a V-shaped peripheral groove. When it is desired to form projections on all the sides of the bar, as shown in Fig. 7, each roll is provided with two series of radiallyrojecting ribs, the ribs of one series being in ine with the open spaces between the ribs of the other series. The inner ends of each series of ribs are beveled or inclined to form the walls of V-shaped peripheral grooves. In passing a bar through the grooves the inner ends of the ribs depress the metal against which they bearand the metal thus displaced is forced into the spaces between the ribs, producing the projections a, as shown in Fig. 7. It is preferred that a substantially rectangular groove 3 should be formed in the bottoms of the V-grooves, into which metal is squeezed, forming beads along two corners of the bar,
beads on the other corners being formed by the squeezing of the metal into the spaces 4 between the rolls. As shown in Fig. 5, one of our improved rolls can be used with a roll 5, having a V-shaped groove with continuous walls, or, as shown in Fig. 6, each roll may have one of the walls of its groove formed by radial ribs with beveled inner ends and the other wall of the groove continuous or unbroken. In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 two of the sides of the bar would be formed with alternate projections and depressions.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, one or both of the series of ribs are provided with teethlike projections 6, the teeth on one roll intermeshing with those on the other roll, thus maintaining the ribs on one roll in proper operative relation to those on the other roll. While this construction is preferred, it will be readily understood that the teeth 6 may be omitted and the proper relative rotation of the rolls be obtained by means of intermeshing gear-wheels 7, secured on the journals or shafts of the rolls.
These rolls are readily made by casting with the ribs or with'the ribs and teeth 6 and cutting the V-grooves in a lathe, as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
We claim herein as our invention 1. A roll'having a series of radially-projecting ribs providedwith teeth, the inner ends ofthe ribs being beveled or inclined to form a wall of a V-groove.
2. A roll having two series of radially-projecting ribs, the ribs of one series being in line with the spaces between the ribs of the other series, the inner ends of the ribs being oppositely inclined or beveled to form a V.-groove.
3. A roll having two series of radially-projecting ribs having their inner ends beveled or inclined to form Walls of a V-groove, said roll having an auxiliary groove at the bottom of the main or V groove.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands. v
DAVID L. EYNON. SAMUEL SHERIFF.
