' BRAKE-BEAM FOR ELECTRIC AND OTHER CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Applicstinii filed 111M125, 1906. Serial No. 813,683.
Patented bet. 9,1900.
To; all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SE'rii A. (.uoun, a citizenof the United States, and a resident of New York cit in the county of New Yorkcw York, have invented cer- 5 and State of tain new and useful lm rovenicnts in Brakelleams for Electric an other (Burs, of which the following is n specification.
' The invention relates to improvcmcnts in I brake-beams for electric :md other curs; run:
' it consists in the novel fcu turcs and construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. 1
Brn ke-bcamsof the class to which my ini vcntion .pcrtains comprise it rolled bod ybeam of suitable length, brake-heads of suitablc' construction on the ends thereof, and a fulcrum for the brake-lever; and my invcn tion has for-its object-to produce a novel fulcrum for use in such beams, said fulcrum being capable of Bel firmly and quickly applied to thohcijlmwnr -of sustaining, the great strains.
T to which fulcrums in modern high-speed clac- ,,.tric ours are subjected, the, fulcrum of my in- Wcntion being of forged metal bent into the desired shape, the parts of the fulcrum while beingjgivcn such shape not being unduly stretched or weakened. The fulcrum of my invention comprises side members to receive between them the brake-lover, flanges to lap around the flange of the body-beam, and flanges laterally spread apart to engage the web of the'body-beu-m, said weh-flangos being out of vertical alincment with cach other and the entire fulcrum being preferably, though not necessarily, formed of one integral bar of forged metal or one integral merchant-bar. It is usually necessary in modern clcctricscar equipment that the sides of the fulcrum stand at right angles to the longitudinal line of tho body-heam, and in accordanccwith my in- "l ention I am enabled to give these sides such mile and secure the spreading apart of the Iwe -fianges without unduly weakening or punishing the metal while giving it tho proper outlines to secure an efficient fulcrum, tho production of which is the object of my inwvention.
The invention will be fully understood from ;o the detailed description hereinafter present ed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detached to view of n. fulcrum constructed in accor once with and 55 embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is anouter end view of sdme, taken from the right-hand end of Fig. l cnd indicating by dotted lines a. portion of the body-beam. Fi 3 is a transverse section through a. brakeearn-having the fulcrum applied thereto, the fulcrum ,being shown in side elevation; and Fig'..4 is a. detached face view, partly broken sway, of a. bar of forged metal which I utilize in'the production of the fulcrum shown'injFig l-fi 1 In the drawings, 10 designates a portionof the usual body-bea'm,jand 11 the novel fulj-C. crum of my invention, which is appliedcen trally on 'on edge. ofi-thclbeani 'nnd inpthe '5 form shownis oneintegmlgbarfo "forgcdgf metal folded, at its ccut'er g toji fdrm til members 12 133, which areape 11 14,, to receive the pin. for thoflbrak cveninot shown) and standat a'right ang c-to the on gitudinal line of the beam l0,:,a 'n d at'th 3 nor ends of which sides thc cn the bar have a twist o lffnpnfiqfi opposite directionsifninrsn 'si'd curved flanges ,linibfgphe,
said sids, which ure vertica tal up or and lower, esggthq gigs 16 of t e body-bearnr Ytgngl gthgfififigfisilfi the end portions- ,ofilth' rausnniihiws the I flanges l7 and 18,-the lattergen'gag" --r.the wcb of the beam '10 .and tho-h I the faces of the flange 16 at thsides a saidmeb. The flanges 17 extend inwardly transversely of the bod -beam nnd substantially at, right angles to the longitudinal line thereof, while,
as shown in Fig. 1, the flnngosglS flare outwardly in a direction and from thcinner edges of said'flain'gsu'; -;Thc flanges 18 are, as shown in Fi I and-2, set
.outwiirdly beyond the vcrtica planos-fof thc.
sides 12 13,,and said flanges 18 are secured to the web of the body-beam byrivets 19. 9 5 I run enabled to form the fulcrum in the spccinl outline shown and sbovc' described without unduly stretchin or weakening thc metal in. the for; ration 0% the flangesl5 by making it from a brged hair 20, Fl 4, having Ioc its cud portions rcversoly. dispose in the outline shown in Fig. 4, eacl'i of said end portions comprising a latcrally-dcllcctod section 21 and an outr-r section 22, which is at. an angle to the bodx of the bar 20 and inclines'reversely 05 at an angle to the section 21. The sections 2-] 22 may he formed on the ends of the bar .20 by means oi dies in a press, said dies bending the bar on its ed as to produce said sections. I indicate in lg. 4 as closely as pos 1 lo sihle by dotted lings 23 24, respectively, the
lines on which the 'reversely-disposed cud portions of the bar will be bent to form the flanges 17 18, the dotted lines 23 denoting the line of the fold of the bar at the horizontal outer edge of the beam-flange 16 and-the dotted lines 241 'denotin theline of the fold of the bar at the adjoining edges of .the flanges 17 18. A portion of the sections 21 of the bar is utilized in the formation of the flanges 15, and another portion of said sections is utilized in the formation of the flanges 18, while that portion of said sections 21 intermediate the lines 23 24 finally forms the flanges 17. In the production of the fulcrum from the bar 20 the latter is first reversely bent on edge at its ends to produce the reversqgections 21 22, then each end'of the bar is bent to form the fian 'cs 15 l7 l8, and finallv the bar is folded at its middle to produce the sides 12 13.
Iprefer to form the entirefulcrum in one integral piece from a merchant-bar on ac count of the manifest su )eriority of the integral structure; but it is-o vious that with less advantage the fulcrum sides may be in se 'arate pieces, and, if desired, riveted togct er at the outer end 25 of the fulcrum in the severa. ways l rnown to the art-as, for illustration; as shown in Patent No. 720,677, dated February 17," 1903.
dln-accprdance with my present invention I am enab ed to produce a fulcrum from forged metal and" without unduly stretchin or weakening the same, having sides w 'ch stand at right angles to the length of the body-befiin,-'fiiid are .provided at their inner ends with flan es 15; 17, and 18 to engage said bedm, the flanges 18 bein spread apart, so that they extend outwan ly from each other and beyond and at right angles to the. vertical lanes of said sides.
W'hat claim as niv invention, and desire to secure by Letters atent, is v 1. A brake-beam fulcrum of forged bar metal having vertical side members 12 15, flanges l5 curving therefrom to the horizontal edges of the beam-flange, and flanges 17, 18 respectively engaging said bearndlange and the web of the beam, said flanges 18 being extended outwardly in a direction from each other and at right angles from said side mombers; substantiall as set forth.
2. A brake-beam fulcrum in one inte'ral piece of forged bar metal folded at its middle portion am having vertical side members 12, 13, flanges 15 curving therefrom to the horizontal edges of the beam-flange, and flanges 17, 18 respectively engaging said beam-flange and the web of the beam, said flanges 18 being extended outwardly in a direction from each other and at right, angles from said side members; substantiullx' as set forth.
3. A brake-beam fulcrum of forged bar metal comprising side members to receive the brake-lever and having at their inner ends the flanges 15 curving therefrom to the hori zontal edges of thebeam-flange and flanges 17, 18 respectively engaging said beam-flange and the web of the beam. said flanges 18 be in g extended outwardly in a direction from and beyond each other, and said side members having at their inner ends the laterally revei-sely disposed end portions for the formation of sahl flangcs and each comprising a laterally-deilccted inner section 21 and an outer rcversely-deflooted section 22 dis osed at an angle to thebody ofthe bar and a so to said section 21 substantially as set forth.
4. A brake-beam fulcrum in one inte ral piece of forgired bar metal folded at its middle portion anr com-prising side members to receive the brake-lever and having attheir inner ends the flan cs 15 curving therefrom to the horizontal e ges of the beam-flange and flanges 17, 18 respectively engaging said beam-flan e and the web of the beam, said flanges 18 eing extended outwardly in a direction from and beyond each other, and said side members having at their inner ends the laterally rcverselv dis oscd end portions or the formation of sail flanges and each comprising a laterally-deflected inner section .31 and an outer reverscly deflected section 22 disposed at an angle to the body of the her and also to said section 21; substantially as set forth.
