TIME-SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1906.
Application filed August 9, 1905. Renewed May 12, 1906. Serial Ito. 316,422.
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER MATTERN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Time-Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an electric switch with a time-controlled device whereby the switch may be opened or closed at a predetermined time.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved and simple device of the kind stated particularly adapted for turning electric lights oif or on at a desired hour.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the switch closed and with the clock set to open the switch at a predetermined hour. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the switch open with the clock arranged to close the same at the appointed time.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a shelf supported adjacent a switchboard 7. This shelf is adapted to support a clock 8, which is preferably an ordinary alarm-clock in which the alarm or similar device can be set to release at any desired hour. Above the shelf is a bracket 9, upon the outer end of which is pivoted a lever 10, which has an upright arm 11 at the middle, the lever being fulcrumed at 12. The upright arm 11 is connected by a rod 13 to the handle 14 of the switch, which in the proposed utilization of the device controls the circuit of the length which it is desired to turn on or off. At each end of the lever 10 is a hook 15, on either of which a chain 16 may be hung to hang down beside the shelf. The chain carries a weight 17.
In the use of the device it maybe set to turn the lights on or oif by setting the clock at either end of the shelf and by hooking the chain to the corresponding end of the lever 10. In the position shown in Fig. 1 the switch is closed and the lights are on. To turn off the lights at the desired hour, the chain is connected to the hook 15 at the outer end of the lever and is then looped over the alarm-key 8 at the back of the clock in such manner that the weight is supported by the said key and so that the chain will slip off the key and allow the weight to drop when the key turns at the time the alarm mechanism is released. Then the weight will drop and pull down the lever, swinging the arm 1 1 and pulling the switch open. If it be desired to turn on the lights at any appointed time, the clock is moved along to the other end of the shelf, as shown in Fig. 2, and the switch being open the chain and weight are connected to the other end of 'the lever, and when the time arrives the weight drops and swings the lever to close the switch.
It will be seen that the device is very simple in construction and may be made by any janitor or other person charged with the duty to open or close a lamp or other circuit.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a switch, of a lever connected to the movable member of the switch and adapted to open or close the same, a weight movable from one end of the lever to the other, and a clock also movable from one end of the lever to the other and having means to support the weight and to release the same at a predetermined time.
2. The combination with a switch, of a lever having a rod connection to the handle of the switch, a weight having means to connect same with either arm of the lever, and a timecontrolled device having means to releasably support the weight in either position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PETER MATTERN.
