JOHN HERMAN BARKLAGE, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
BUCKLE-SHIELD AND TRACE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented 0ct. 2, 1906.
Application filed uly 28,1905. Serial No 271.687.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HERMAN BARK- LAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Buckle-Shield and Trace-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in buckle-shields and trace-holders, and has for its object to provide a device that can be readily attached to the buckle on the hip-strap of any harness.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device that will form a shield as well as a trace-carrier, so that all danger of the horses tail becoming entangled in the buckle is prevented.
l/Vith these objects in view my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device attached to a hip-strap. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my device. Fig. 3 is a side view of my improved trace-carrier removed. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the upper part of the hip-strap B, the lower part of the hip-strap supporting the breeching provided with a buckle O, connecting the two together. Fitting over the buckle is my improved shield D, which consists of an oblong plate curved upwardly, as shown at D, provided with a lug D and oblong slots D formed adjacent each end, which are adapted to receive the back-band A. Arranged adj acent the slot at the end of the shield D are eyes D for the purpose hereinafter described. The strap B is provided with a series of guide-loops B, holding the end of the upper part of the hip-strap A in place.
My improved trace-carrier E is preferably formed of wire and consists of -'the oblong loop E, adapted to fit over the central guideloop B, the curved members E extending from opposite sides of the loop which are provided with a curved hook member E fitting over the lug D of the shield D. The ends of the members E are bent at right angles and are adapted to fit into eyes D*.
In assembling my device the upper part of the hip-strap is run through the slot in the shield adjacent the eyes, through the buckle, and out through the slot in the other end, and then through the loops on the lower part of the hip-strap, it being understood that the loop of the trace-carrier'has been put over a central loop beforehand and securely fastened by the upper part of the hip-strap passing over it. The ends are then sprung into the eyes on the shield and the curved members brought into engagement with the lug on the shield and the device is complete.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a buckle-shield and trace-holder, the combination with a two-piece hip-strap connected together by a buckle, of a curved plate provided with oblong slots arranged on said straps and over said buckle, a lug projecting up from said plate, eyes formed on said plate the hook member pivoted in said eyes, provided with a loop adapted to be engaged by the upper part of the hip-strap, for the purpose described.
2. In a buckle-shield and trace-holder, the combination with a pair of straps connected by a buckle, a curved plate provided With slots secured over said buckle on one of said straps, eyes formed on said plate, a lug formed on said plate, a hook member pivoted in said eyes adapted to engage said lugs, and provided with a loop adapted to fit over the end of said strap, for the purpose described.
8. In a buckle-shield and trace-holder, the combination with a pair of straps buckled together, of a curved plate provided with slots adjacent each end, arranged over said buckle and on the upper strap, spaced eyes formed on said plate, a lug formed on the opposite end of said plate and a hook member consisting of a pair of parallel wires having their ends bent outwardly and mounted in said eyes of the plate, curved members projecting from said hook members, provided with a loop adapted to fit over the end of said strap, for the purpose described.
JOHN HERMAN BARKLAGE.
