Be it known that I, HENRY M. F. LEIGHTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dawson, in the county of Dallas and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Neck-Yoke Holder, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a neck- *oke holder of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction designed to be applied in the nature of an attachment to any ordinary wagon-tongue and when in position to positively hold the neck-yoke center against. removal from the tongue and at the same time capable of being quickly and easily detached to permit the removal of the neck yoke from the tongue.

My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects con templated are obtained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a portion of a vehicletongue and neck-yoke with the neck-yoke center arranged on the tongue,

Fig. 3 shows an enlarged detail front end view of the collar to pass over the end of a vehicletongue with the spring locking-rod in position therein, and Fig. 4 shows a perspective view illustrating a modification.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference-numeral 10 to indicate a vehicletongue having mounted thereon the usual guard for a neck-yoke center, (indicated by the numeral 11.) The portion of the neck-yoke shown is indicated by the numeral 12 and is provided with a neck-yoke center 13, designed to pass over the end of the tongue and engage the guard 11 to prevent further rearward movement.

The parts just described are of the ordinary construction and form no part of my present invention.

My attachment comprises, first, a collar 14, formed with a hook 15 and designed to be permanently connected with the tongue in the rear of the guard, the hook thereof being on the under side of the tongue. I provide a second collar 16, having outwardly-projecting ends 17, spaced apart and connected by a rivet 18. This collar is designed to be placed on the forward end of a vehicle-tongue in front of the guard 11. The spring lockingrod comprises a coiled portion 19, wound around a rivet 18, the rod at one end of the coil being inclined rearwardly at 20 and then laterally at 21, the part 21 being designed to engage the under surface of the vehicletongue. At the other end of the collar 19 the spring-rod inclines downwardly and rearwardly at 22, then straight rearwardly at 23, then upwardly and rearwardly at 2 1, then straight rearwardly at 25, and on its rear end is a downwardly-inclined portion 26. The end 25 is designed to be placed in the hook 15, as shown in Fig. 1, and the end 26 prevents a forward movement of the collar 16 and the spring locking-rod. I

In practical use and assuming the device to be applied. to a vehicle tongue in the position shown in Fig. 1 obviously the pressure of the end 21 of the spring locking-rod on the under surface of the tongue will serve to secure the collar 16 in the position in which it is placed, while the end 26 of the spring locking-rod in the hook 15 will serve to positively prevent a forward movement of the collar 16. Furthermore, the resiliency of the coiled portion 19 will serve to hold the end 25 of the rod downwardly into firm engagement with the hook 15. The neck-yoke center may have free movement between the guard 11 and the collar 16, but is positively prevented from slipping over the forward end of the tongue by said collar and spring locking-rod. Assuming that it is desired to remove the neck-yoke, the operator grasps the rear end portion of the spring locking-rod, releases it from the hook 15, and permits it to swing downwardly, thus relieving the pressure of the end 21 against the under surface of the tongue, so that the collar 16 may easily be removed from the forward'end of the tongue, and then the neck-yoke center may be withdrawn over the forward end of the tongue in the ordinary way.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 4 I have shown a form of my invention designed for use in connection with a wagon-tongue having a loop 27 at its forward end. The holder is formed complete of a single piece of spring metal with its forward end formed into a spiral coil 28, designed to be secured to the lower-portion of the loop 28, as shown in the drawings. A short distance in the rear of the spiral ,coil are two upwardly-projecting IIO lugs 29 to engage the under surface of the tongue a short distance in advance of. the neck-yoke guard to thereby hold the neckyoke ring 13 between said lugs and said guard. Immediately in the rear of the lugs 29 the holder is bent downwardly at 30 to al low room for the neck-yoke ring 13. The rear end of the holder comprises a straight portion 31 and a loop 32 to be engaged by the hook 33 in the same .manner as in my preferred form before described. The loop 32 is yieldingly held in the hook 33 by the resiliency of the metal between the lugs 19, which engage the under surface of the tongue and the rear end of the holder.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is

1. The combination witha vehicletongue formed with a hook a short distance in the rear of its forward end and a neck-yoke holder having itsforward end designed for detachable connection with the forward end of a wagon-tongue and its body portion designed to be yieldingly held downwardly and shaped to engage said hook.

2. The combination of a wagon-tongue having a hook thereon, of a neck-yoke holder device provided with means for detachably connecting it, with :the forward end of the tongue and .its rear end designed to engage said hook and also provided. with a springing portion to engage the tongue a slight distance in the rear of the body where it is attached to the tongue and to yieldingly hold its rear end downwardly in engagement with the bottom of said hook.

3. In a neck-yoke holder, the combination of a collar, a spring-rod pivoted to the collar with one end designed to be yieldingly held against the under surface of the tongue, and the other end projected rearwardly under the tongue, and a hook secured to the tongue to engage said rear end of the spring-rod.-

4. The combination with a vehicle-tongue having a neck-yoke guard .thereon, ofv a collar fixed to the tongue in the rear of the guard and provided with a hook, a collar slidingly mounted .on the forward end of the tongue and formed with two downwardly-projecting ends, a rivet connecting said ends, and a spring locking-rod formed with a coil. surrounding the rivet and having, one of the ends projecting from the coil extending rearwardly and then laterally. to yieldinglyengage the under surface of the tongue, and having the other end extended rearwardly under the neck-yoke guard and formed ,with a downward extension at its rear end, said .rear end designed to yieldingly rest in saidhook.
