GEORGE W. BLAIR AND LOUIS WOLF, OF I/VABASH, INDIANA.
FAUCET BOTTLE-STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1906.
Application filed May 14, 1906. Serial No. 316,715.
To all whmn it may concern;
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. BLAIR and LOUIS WVoLF, citizens of the United States, residing at I/Vabash, in thevcounty of W abash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucet BottleStoppers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to bottle-stoppers, but more particularly to a faucet bottle-stopper; and our invention has for its object to provide a device of this character which can be inserted in the mouth of any ordinary bottle, but which is more particularly designed to be used in connection with a large bottle for the purpose of filling smaller bottles therefrom.
With this object in view our'invention consists in the novel construction of the faucet bottle-stopper, and particularly in the construction of the key, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a bottle provided with the faucet bottle-stopper. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the faucet bottle-stopper.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the two figures, in which 1 indicates a bottle of any kind or type, and 2 indicates a faucet bottle-stopper. The faucet bottle-stopper 2 comprises the barrel 3 and the key 4. The barrel 3 is preferably made of wood, such as red cedar, the end 5 being tapered and covered, preferably, with cork 6, so as to insure a tight joint or union with the neck of the bottle 1. Passing transversely through the barrel 3 is a tapered opening 7, accommodating the key 4, while the barrel 3 is bored longitudinally, as shown at 8, said bore communicating with the tapered opening 7.
Referring particularly to the key 4, it will be seen that the same is provided with a longitudinal passage 9, having a shoulder 10 formed at one end thereof, said shoulder being formed by reason of the entrance of the port 11 into said passage, said port communicating with a transverse opening 1 2 through the key, which will hereinafter be termed a vent. Threaded into the key at 13 is a tip or nozzle 14, the end 15 of said tip or nozzle forming an offset in the longitudinal portion 7, the bore or opening 15 in said tip or nozzle being considerably reduced in diameter, while an annular bead 16 is provided on said tip or nozzle, said bead forming a shoulder to stop the entrance of the nozzle or tip in the key and also providing a stop for the entrance of the tip or shoulder in the neck of the bottle which is to be filled from the bottle 1.
Having thus described the several parts of our invention, its operation is as follows: The faucet-stopper being inserted in a bottle, as shown in Fig. 1, in order to allow liquid to pass from the bottle 1 into another bottle, glass, or other receptacle the key 4 is turned so that the port 17 therein registers with the bore or passage 8 in the barrel 3. The liquid is then free to pass from the barrel 3 into the passage 9 and through the tip or nozzle 14 on the key 4. By reason of the enlarged diameter of the longitudinal passage 9 in the key 4 the liquid passes through the reduced pas-' sage 15 in the tip or nozzle 14 with more force than would be possible were the diameter of the passage in the key the same as that in the tip or nozzlev I/Vhile this construction at the same time provides for the entrance of the said tip or nozzle into a bottle having a very small neck, the faucet is vented by means of the vent 12 at the top of the longitudinal passage 9 in the key, said vent passing transversely through the flattened portion 18 of the key, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. As it is necessary to operate the key by means of the fingers grasping the flattened portion 18, the flow of liquid through the faucet-stopper can be regulated by the fingers 0n the vent 12. The flow of liquid can be instantly stopped by placing the fingers at both ends of the vent or after the key has been turned in position shown in Fig. 1 and the tip or nozzle 14 has been inserted in the.
bottle. The flow of liquid can be started by uncovering the vent 12, and the flow can be stopped or regulated by covering the vent 12 either wholly or partially by the fingers. This is particularly desirable when the bottle 1 is a vessel of considerable weight and it 18 unhandy to raise the same.
Having thus fully described our invention,
what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a faucet bottle-stopper the combination with a faucetbarrel, of a key arranged therein, said key being provided with a longi tudinal passage and a port connecting said longitudinal passage with the bore or passage in the faucet-barrel, said key being provided with a port of less diameter than the said longitudinal passage, said port entering said passage at one end thereof, said key being provided with a transverse vent, said vent and port communicating with said longitudinal port or passage in the key, a tip or nozzle having a threaded connection with said key and a passage therein communicating with the said longitudinal passage in said key, said passage in the tip or nozzle being of a smaller or reduced diameter than the said longitudinal passage in the key, substantially as described.
2. In a faucet bottle-stopper the combination with a faucet-barrel, a key arranged therein, said key being provided with a longitudinal passage and a port communicating with the bore or passage in the said faucetbarrel, said key being provided with a thumb portion and a transverse vent in said thumb portion, said vent communicating with the said longitudinal passage in the said key, the whole being arranged whereby the flow of liquid through said longitudinal passage in said key can be wholly or partially prevented, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we afliX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
