To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I7 WILLIAM YEATTs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meadville, in the county of Halifax and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Track-Crossing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to track-crossings; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangements of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide at a track-crossing swinging or pivoted members which are adapted to be moved into alinement with the track-rails upon which the car is approaching, so as to close the space usually made at the intersection 0f track-rails and present a continuous traction-surface in order to avoid unnecessary jarring and wear and tear upon the rollingstock and the track. The said members are so mounted and provided with operating means as to swing in alinement with the track-rails extending in the different directions. The operating means for the said pivot members comprises trips which extend vertically through the track-rails and are in elevated positions when the said pivoted members are disposed at angles to the rails to which the said trips are applied, and the said trips are in depressed positions when the said members are in alinement with the rails to which they are applied. Suitable connecting means is provided for a housing which is located below the track-rails, said means operatively connecting the said trips with the said swinging or pivoted members.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the track-crossing. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
The housing 1 is located below the trackrails 2 2. The said track-rails, as illustrated in Fig. 1, cross eachother at right angles. However, they may cross each other at any other angle. The shaft 3 is journaled in vertical position at the center of the said housing 1. The cross-arms 4 4 are fixed to the said shaft 3 near the upper end thereof. The said arms 4 are provided with the bifurcated ends 5. The track members 6 are pivoted in the same horizontal plane as the track-rails 2, the pivotal points of the said members 6 being in alinement with the longitudinal axis of the said rails 2. The pivots 7 of the said members 6 extend down through the top of the rotated, which swing housing 1 and are providedl at their lower ends with the cranks 8. The ends of the said cranks are located between the bifurcations 5 of the arms 4. The cross-arms 9 are attached to the shaft 3 at or near the middle thereof.
The links 10 are pivoted at their ends to the outer ends of the arms 9 and at their other ends are provided with the pivoted knuckles 11, the ends of which are bifurcatedand are pivotally attached to the lugs 12, mounted upon the shafts 13. The said shafts 13 are in horizontal positions and extend transversely with relation to the track-rails 2, located directly above the same. The trips 14 are pivoted at one end` to the track-rails 2, and the upper ends of the links '15 are pivotally attached to the opposite ends of the said trips 14, and the lower ends of the said links 15 are pivotally attached to the lugs 16, which are also attached to the shafts 13. The parts are so arranged that the pivoted members 6 always swing toward each other in lining up with the track-rail-that isto say, the members 6 that are opposite each other in the direction from which the car is approaching will swing toward each other in lining up with the track-rail upon which the approaching car is traveling.
Presuming that the car is approaching upon the tracks 2 and traveling in the direction as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, the wheel of the car rides upon the trip 14 and depresses the inner end thereof, which in turn through link 15 and lug 16 partially rotates the shaft 13. The movement of the said shaft 13 through the lug 12, knuckle 11, and link 10 turns the cross-arms 9 and the shaft 3. The cross-arms 4 are correspondin ly turned and the crank-shafts 7 are partialy alinement with the track-rails 2, and thus the space at the crossing is closed and the continuous traction-surface is provided.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that all of the moving parts move simultaneously when any one of the trips 14 is depressed and that the pivoted members 6 will remain in the position in which they are placed until a car approaches upon that track which extends transversely to the track with which they are alined, when they will, as above described, be swung into alinement with the track upon which the car is appreaching.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A track-crossing` comprising members pivoted in alinement with intersecting trackrails, a shaft journaled in vertical position below the track, cross-arms attached to the shaft and connected with said pivoted members, a second set of cross-arms fixed to the said shaft, horizontal shafts extending transversely with relation to the track-rails, links connecting the last said cross-arms with said horizontal shafts, trips pivotally mounted and located adjacent the said track-rails and being operatively connected with said horizontal shafts.
2. A traekscrossing comprising members pivoted in alinement with intersecting trackrails, a shaft journaled in vertical position below the track, cross-arms attached to said shaft and being operatively connected with said pivoted members, a second set of crossarms also attached to said shaft, horizontal shafts suitably journaled and extending transversely with relation to the track-rails, links attached at their ends to the second said cross-arms, knuckle-joints pivoted to said links and being operatively connected with the said horizontal shafts, trips pivotally mounted and located adjacent the trackrails and being operatively connected with said horizontal shafts.
