JOHN C. EASLEY, OF VAN BUREN, OHIO.
RAILROAD-CROSSING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 618,790, dated January 31, 1899.
Application filed October 11, 1898. Serial No- 693 198. (No-model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN G. EASLEY, of Van Buren, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented anew and Improved Railroad-Orossing,of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to improvements in crossings for two railway-tracks which cross each other at any angle, (here shown as .at right angles;) and the object is to provide a simple construction by means of which the rails of a track upon which a train is moving may be made continuous at the point of j unction of the two tracks, thus obviating the usual and disagreeable jolting of cars when passing over the crossing.
I will describe a railroad-crossing embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a crossing embodying myinvention, the cover hereinafter described being removed. Fig. 2 is a plan view similar to Fig. 1, but drawn on a larger scale.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, with the cover hereinafter described in place. Fig.
4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig.
5 is an elevation of a signal employed. 7
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the rails of one railway-track, and 2 designates the a rod 6 extends outward to a connection with a shifting lever 7.
Mounted to slide transversely of the track 2 and designed to form connections for the rails 1 are track-sections 8 9, mounted to slide in keepers 10, secured to the bed-plate, and extended from each section 8 9 to a connection with a block rail-section 11 is a link 12. The links 12 have pivotal connection with lugs on the sections 8 9, and also have pivotal connection with lugs on the blocks 11. The blocks 11 are mounted to slide on elevated portions 13 of the bed-plate 3 and in guides 13 and are designed to be moved between the adjacent inner ends of the sections 8 9 and crowd the outer ends of said sections closely against the ends of the rails 1. A sliding motion is imparted to the blocks, and also to the rail-sections, by means of the shifting plate 4, which has link connections 14 with the blocks 11. Similar sections 15 16 are provided for continuing the track-rails 2 across the crossing, and also coacting with these sections 15 16 are the track-blocks 17 ,which have link connections 18 with the sections and also link connections 19 with the shifting plate 4.
It is designed that when the device is operated for connecting the rails of a track a signal shall also be operated to indicate that the track-sections are in the proper position for the passage of a train, and it is further designed that derailing-switches shall be opened in one of the tracks while the other track is complete for the passage of a train. The sig* nals 20 are arranged at the side of the tracks at each side of the crossing, and each signal is mounted on an upright shaft 21, mounted in a frame 22 and having on its lower end a pinion 23, engaging with a segment-rack 24, having a link connection 25 with a switchtongue or swinging track-section 26, normally forming a portion of one of the track-rails 1 2. From the inner side of this swinging section 26 a link 27 extends to a connection with a rod 28, movable through guides 011 the trackties and having connection with the block operating to force the short sections outward. Goacting with the swinging section 26 and with the opposite rail to the one in which the section 26 is arranged is a switch-tongue 29, having a link connection 30 with the rod 28. In the drawings it will be noted that the sections 15 16 and the blocks 17 are in position tocontinue the rails 2 over the crossing, and, further, that the parts in the track comprising the rails 1 are in the position to derail a train should one arrive near the crossing on said track, thus preventing a collision with a train on the other track, which now has the right of way. The connections will be reversed obviously by rotating the plate 4 by means of the lever 7 and its connection 6.
At the corners the bed-plate 3 preferably has openings 31 to allow dirt, grave], or similar material to fall through and thus prevent the blocking of the ends of the short sections, and the plate will also have holes 32 to allow for the falling through of gravel or the like inward of the block-sections. Obviously when the plate 4 is operated to shift the connecting-sections of the blocks the sections will be properly operated, as will also the derailing devices. The working parts may be protected by a metal cover 33, supported at its corners by posts 34, said cover having upturned edges 33 and openings 33 near said edges, as shown in Fig. 3. Stops 35 are provided on the bed-plate 3 to limit the movements of the shifting plate 4- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a railway-crossing, a bed-plate arranged in the crossing, a shifting device mounted to rotate on the bed-plate, track-sections mounted to slide on the bed-plate, trackblocks movable between adjacent ends of the track-sections, the said blocks having bevand movable track-sections, substantially asspecified.
3. In a railway-crossing, a bed-plate arranged in the crossing, track-sections movable longitudinally on said plate and designed to form continuations of the main-track rails,
track-blocks movable between the adjacent inner ends of pairs of said track-sections, the said blocks having beveled ends to engage corresponding bevels on the track -seetion ends, a plate mounted to rotate on the bedplate, link connections between said rotating plate and the movable track-sections and blocks, means for rotatingsaid plate, and a signal operated from said plate, substantially asspecified.
4. In a railway-crossing, a bed-plate ar ranged in the crossing, rail-sections movable longitudinally on said plate, rail-blocks movable between adjacent inner ends of said sections, said blocks having beveled ends to engage corresponding bevels on the ends of the rail-sections, a rotary plate for operating said sections and blocks, sections operated by said plate, and derailing-seetions in the main tracks, operated by said plate, substantially as specified.
5. In a railway-crossin g a series of movable rail-sections for uniting the main rails of the tracks, a shifting device for operating said sections, a swinging section in one of the rails of the main track, connections between said swinging section and the shifting device, a signal at the side of the track, a pinion on the shaft of the signal, a segment-rack engaging the pinion and a connection between the segment-rack and swinging section substantially as specified.
6. In a railway-crossing, a bed-plate arranged in the crossing, track-sections mounted to slide in keepers on the bed-plate, trackblooks movable between the adjacent ends of the track-sections, guides on elevated portions of the bed-plate and in which the blocks slide, link connections between the blocks and sections, a shifting plate on the bed-plate and link connections between said blocks and shifting plate, substantially as specified.
JOHN G. EASLEY.
