ANDREW s. CAIRNOROSS,
OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
AUTOMATIC STOP MECHANISM FOR ROTARY OVE NS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 25, 1906.
Application filed April 7, 1905. Renewed August 23, 1906. Serial No. 331,771.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW S. CAIRN- GROSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Stop Mechanism for Rotary Ovens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic stop mechanism for rotary ovens and it consists in improved mechanism for stopping the rotation of the oven at prede termined intervals.
To this end my invention consists in the features of construction and combination hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which shows a front elevation of my invention in connection with an oven, A re resents the outside casing of the oven. 'I/Vithin the casing and mounted upon the shaft 2 is a rotary oven 28 for holding cookies or other articles. Secured upon the outer end of the shaft 2 is a worm- Wheel 3, with which intermeshes a worm 4, mounted upon the horizontal driving-shaft 5. The shaft 5 has suitable journal-bearings 6 and carries a loose pulley 7 and fixed pulley 8, adapted to be connected by a belt (not shown) with a suitable source of power.
The belt is adapted to be shifted from the fused to the loose pulley and the driving-shaft stopped by the following described mechanism: Slidably mounted in bearings 9, parallel with the shaft 5, is a shaft 10, connected at one end with a fixed bracket 11 by a spring 12. The shaft 10 carries a beltshifter 13 of suitable construction. Having pivotal support 14 below the shaft 10 is a bent lever 15, the upper end of the bent lever engaging with a boss 16, carried by the shaft 10, the opposite end of the bent lever having pivotal connection 17 with the lever-arm 18. The lever arm 18 has fulcrum-support 19 and at its outer end carries a brake 20, which works in connection with a brake-pulley 27, mounted on the main driving-shaft 5, the opposite end of the lever-arm 18 carrying a roller 21, constructed to fit into recesses 22, formed in the outer edge of a ring 23, carried by the worm-w heel 3. The lever-arm 18 is connected at its worm end by a cable 24 with a foot-pedal 25, the cable running over suitable pulleys 26. I
Operation: IVith the parts in the position shown in the drawing the operator to start the rotation of the oven will depress the pedal 25, lifting the lever-arm 18 out of engagement with the recessed ring 23. This slides the rod 10 by means of the intermediate bent le ver 15, shifting the belt from the loose pulley 7 to the fixed pulley 8 and releasing the brake 20. The oven will now be rotated, the pulley 21 of the lever 18 traveling upon the outer edge of the ring until it reaches the succeeding recess 22. As the roller reaches the succeeding recess it will be carried into it through the medium of the spring 12, which withdraws the slidable rod 10, carrying the beltshifter 13 from the fixed to the loose pulley and acting upon the leverarm 18 through the connecting ent lever 15. This movement of the lever-arm 18 will set the brake 20, carried by the opposite end of the lever-arm, against the brake-pulley 27 to stop rotation of the oven. When it is desired to again start the rotation of the oven, the operator simply has to depress the pedal 25.. The 1'0- tation of the oven is thus automatically stopped at predetermined intervals, the length of the intervals being regulated by the distance betweenthe recesses 22 of the ring 23.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a rotary supporting-shaft of the class described, a main driving-shaft, operative connection between said shafts, a ring with peripheral recesses carried by said supporting-shaft, a pivotallysup ported lever arranged in position to cooperate with said recesses, braking means carried by said lever in position to brake said main driving-shaft, means for actuating said lever to throw the same into braking position, and means actuated by said lever for simultaneously throwing said driving-shaft out of operation. V
2. In combination with a rotatable supporting-shaft of the class described, a main said shafts, a ring carried by said supporting shafts and provided with peripheral recesses, a pivotally-supported lever arranged in position to cooperate with said recesses, braking mechanism supported by said lever in connection with said main shaft, a slidable springactuated rod supported adjacent to said main shaft, a belt-shifter carried by said rod, and a connection between said lever and slidable rod, for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a rotatable supporting-shaft of the class described, a main driving-shaft, operative connection between driving-shaft, operative connection between said shafts a ring carried by said supportingshaft and provided with peripheral recesses, a pivotally-supported lever provided at one end with a roller fitted to said recesses and at the other end with a brake arranged in position to cooperate with the main shaft, a slidable spring-supported rod arranged adjacent to said main shaft, belt-shifting mechanism carried by said slidable rod, and a crank-arm connecting said lever with said slidable rod, [0 for the purpose set forth.
Intestimony whereof I affixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW S. CAIRNCROSS.
