Be it lniown that l, STEPHEN H. FARNHAM, ya citizen ofthe United States, residing at @hicago, in the county Cit-Cook andState of illinois, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Type-Writers, of which the following is a specification, the same being a division ot' my applicat tiled May l?, 1902. v
This invention relates to a construction ot type-Writer more especially adapted and intended for the use ot merchants and dealers generally in. nia-king a hill. and charge .record and an abstract ot a skeleton ledger under va- .rioiis headings, but can be used for any class .of type-Writing Work Where various iterns malte up a total and such total is to be carried to a classified list or abstract in condensed forni under various headings, so that a 'total 'ci the different headings may he produced consecutively with the bill, statement, report, or other record without the necessity of removing the blank tor the 4abstract or the skelet ori-ledger from the machine Witht'he renioval of a bill, statement, report, or other charge-record;
The objects of the invention are to construct a divided or sectional cylinder or roller platen one division or section oilivhich is utilined for making thereon the hill, statement, report or other record and they other division or section of which is utilized for making the skeleton ledger and cperatingeacli division or section independently bypneens ot actuating paivls or dogs and ratchet-Wheels v or disks, a ratchet-Wheel or disk being used for each division 0r section ot the cylinder or platen, to interlock the divisions or sections together 4and lenable one paWl or dog and its ratchet-Wheel or disk .to advance both divi- .sions or sections simult-aneously,and to iniconsists in the features ot construction and I arrangement l? ing the dog or pa' l e cvlindei" or ii Specification of Letters Patent,

he cylinder or roller-platen can beef any diameter and lengthdesired to snit the construction of type-Writing machine and the Work to be done. The cylinder or rollerplaten as shown is constructed in tivo divisions or sections. one of'which is foi greater length than the other. The longer Idivision or section A is made of an 'outer'shell or covering a, of vulcanized rubber or other suitable. material and an inner tube lor hollmvc'entera made of wood or other suitable material. The divisi onor section B ot the cylinder or platen is made oi'an outer shell or covering l), of vulcanized rubber or other suitable niat-erial, and an inner tuhe'o'r holloivlcenter b, of Wood or other suitable 'material'.I
The diameter of the'tivo divisions'or' sections ot the -ciflinder `is the same, so that when sections abut the' diameter ci the cylinder or platen as a yWhole willbe uniform its entire length. The `outer end of the division or section A has attached thereto al plate A with a huh orbearing A2, and, as shown, the plate is secured in position by sore-Ws al, entered into the ivoodportion or center of the cylinder division or section, and the hub or bearing is attached to 'the 'rod' or shaft on mounted by a set-screw a3', the endl of Which engages the shaft or' rod. The innerer abutting end of the division or section 'A Oil the cylinder or platen has secured theretoa plate C, having a hub or enlarged center c, extending out from which and surrounding the shaft or rod on Which the cylinder or platen isl mounted is a sleeve C, having adjacent toits outer end a hub or enlarged center c in the construction shown in Fig. 1ll The plate C is attached to the4 end of the division or section A of the cylinder or platen by screws c2, en
tered into the Wood or hollow centerof the division orsection. The' inner or abutting end of the division or section B of the cylinderyor platen has securedjthereto a plate D,
having, as shoivn'in Fig. l, a central opening with a contact edged to traveler). the hub or enlarged center c of the plat-e C 'and furnish a suppdrt for the endet the division or section he periphery oi the tivo divi in the saine plane. The

ratchet-teeth e, is attached to the hub or enlarged center c of the sleeve C. The plate or disk E has a rim or hollow hub e', through which passes alocking-screw e2, the' end of which is entered into the hub or enlarged center of the sleeve, so that with the turning of the shaft or rod on which the sleeve is mounted the plate will be revolved or turned. A plate or disk F, having a series'bf peripheral ratchet-teeth, is attached to the outer end of the division or section B of th'e cylinder or pla-ten. This plate o r disk F on its outer face has an annular rim p r flange f', throughv which passes a seti-screwf by means of which the plate or disk F and the division or section B of the cylinder or platen can be locked to the plate or disk E for the divisions or sections of the cylinder or platen to be simultaneously advanced, it being understood that when the `two plates or disks are not interlocked each division or section of the cylinder or platen can be advanced or turned 1ndependently. The plate or disk F is secured to the end of the division or section B of the c linder or platen by screws f 3, entered into t e wood or hollow center of the divisionor section, and the rim or flange f on one side has an opening to permit access to the locking-screw e2 for turning said screw. The plate or disk Eis locked to the sleeve C of the plate C which is secured to the end of the division or section A of the oller or platen, and
, the division or section' A is locked to the rod or shaft on which the cylinder or platen as a whole is mounted, so that with the turning of the shaft orrod the division or section A, the sleeve C', and the plate or disk E will be correspondingly turned; but such turning of the late or disk E will not turn the plate or disk and the division or section B of the cylinder or platen unless the two ,plates or disks .are interlocked. l
A stop G locks both of the plates or disks E and F against turning except as required and also holds the cylinder or roller-platen in line osition after each adjustment. This stop 1s fixedly attached at its outer end to the frame or carriage supporting the cylinder or roller-platen in the arrangement shown, and the body of the stop isalongitudinally slotted to have a side arm g and a side arni g', both ofl which have an elasticity or yield., 'lliese arms are arranged for the arin g to be in line witli the plate. or disk Band the arm g to be in line with the plate or disk F, and each arm at its forward or actin end has pivoted thereto a roller g2, whic contacts and engages the teeth of the plate or disk, as shown in Fig. 3. The plate or disk E is given a lineby-line advance bya reciprocating dog o r pawl H, the actin end h of which engages successively with t e teeth e of the ratchetplate or disk, and the plate or disk F is given a line-by-line advance vby a dogor pawl I, the
acting end i of which engages successively with the teeth f of the ratchet-plate or disk, each dog or pawl being actuated in any usual vand well-known manner for operating the dog or pawl of a type-writer to advancel the cylinder or roller-platen. The shaft or rod J, which carries the cylinder or roller-platen, in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 passes through the sleeve C and extends at' each end beyond the end of the cylinder or platen as a whole and beyond the end of the carriage or frame carrying the cylinder or platen, and, as shown, each projecting end has fixed thereto a finger-knob J by -means of which the shaft or rod can be turned. The shaft is mounted in suitable bearings j on the ends of the 'carlarsuf and set-screws interposed betweenv the iiobs iand the ends of the carriage or,
frame. The carriage or frame K, which supports the cylinder or platen and its shaft or rod, in the form shown consists of a front bar 7c and end bars kf, the end bars having thereon the bearings for the shaft or rod. Each end bar k terminates in a cross head or piece k2 havin ears k3 between which is a collar l i g i on a pivoting-rod L, which allows the frame or carriage to be raised and lowered as usual.
The operation is as follows: The blank for i the bill, statement, report, or charge-record is inserted in the machine on the division or section A of the cylinder or platen and the blank for' the abstract, skeleton ledger, or other total memoranda or record wanted is inserted in the machine on the division or section B of the cylinder or platen. The bill,
statement, report, orotherrecord to be made is written on the blank therefor onl the division or section A of the cylinder, which divi-v sion or section is turned to be advanced line by line in the usual way of operating typewriters by the ratchet-plate or disk E and its actuating-paw] H,- and during' the advance of the division or section A withithe. ratchetplates or disks E and F disconnected thedivision or section B of the cylinder or platen remains stationary or in a fixed posit-ion,fbe
ing held in such position by the arm g and its roller q2 of ythe retainer or stop.
the division or section A the total of such dntries` is to be transferred to the blank on the section or division B under the proper heading, which total is printed on the blank as usual in the 'use of tylw-writers. The com- A\fter` 'the entries have been made on the blankmn is -removedfrom and a new blank for smother 'aaneen leted bill', statement, report, or other record record isrin'serted on-t'he division or, section A 1n the usual manner and the division or section A is turned and advanced in the usual- Way to makethe entries on the blank, and
'during such advance the division or section B remains stationary or in a iixed position. Aiterl the second blank on the division or section A is completed the total ythereof is transferred to the blank 'on the division or section B under the proper heading, the cylinder or platen being moved endwise'in the usual Way of moving a type-writer cylinder or platen. A third, fourth, fifth., and any number of blanks for bills, statements, reports, or records are successively ent-ered in the machine on' the division Aoix'section. Al and properly filled and the total of each .transferred to the blanken the division or section B after each filling of 'a blank on 'the division or section A, and when. the entire number of bills, statements, reports, or other record have been printed on the division or section ledger or such other form of blank as may bey lA and the totals of the various records'have been transferred tothe blank on the division Iorsect-ion B that blank will be completed either in the form of an abstract or skeleton used. As for example: A merchant may desire to ascertain the total amount of groceries, fish, and meat sold daily, Weekly, or monthly. Ifa monthly statement is Wanted, added to from day to day, the operator will after making t-he entry from the grocery sale'- ticket, for instance, on the invoice and charge and putting the total of the groceries in the total-amount column carry the total, to the j blank of the abstract, statement, or skeleton ledger to be kept and enter the same under Ithe groceries-column of such abstract, statement',or skeleton ledger.
The meats purchased are entered fronrthe meat sale- =ticket onto the invoice and charge entry and' and entered in the meat-column.
the total footed, and this total is carried to the abstract,-statement, or skeleton ledger The fish purchased are enteredvfrom the fish sale-ticket on the `,invoice and charge entry and the total footed and this total carried to the abstract, statement, or skeleton ledger and placed in i the iish-column, it being understood that the carriage is advanced or moved endwise in each case., as usual 1n operating a typelWriter, and that the division or section A 1s turned as usual for the line-spaces through pawl, and that the division or section turned as usual for line-spacing by the disk 'F and its actuating dogor pawl I in the construct-ion and arrangement of Fig. 1. There may be three or four entries for groceries to make one total, two or three entries for meat to make the total, and two or three entries of A fish to make the total, each eut-rjv ot the van rions purchases occupyingx separate line spaces on the invoice-and c arge entry, and where these purchases have necessitated the advancement 'of the invoice or bill and charge blank or form in the regular Way the division or section A of the cylinder or platen will have been turned and advanced from eight to ten line-spaces, more-or less, and the division or sectionB of the cylinder orA platen carrying the abstract, statement, or skeleton ledger will have remained stationary or ina fixed position during the entire operation and the three totals of groceries, fish, and meat purA chased appear m the same line in theirA respective columns and will be advanced 'one regular allotted line-space after the various purchases for each customer have been en'- .,tered'f The bill and charge or monthly statement blank When completed can be removed from the machine and another bill and charge or' monthly statement entered into the machine on the division or section A ofthe cylinder or platen without disturbing the division. orsec# tion B of the cylinder or platen occupied by the itemized statementi'or skeleton ledger blank, it only 4being advanced one regular line-s ace after the entry has been made on each ill and charge or'monthly statement blank. A complete skeleton ledger or item4v ized statement Will thus be hadatthe end of the'days Work with an entry in atleast one of the three columns on their regular desired space of the blank, which ent-ries when corn- I puted will give the total amounts of groceries, meats, and fish sold'for the .day in the storeor department, and these total amounts can be checked as a balance with the tot-als` of the'sales of the various salesmen in the store or department to produce a safeguard statement, so that the proprietor may tknow by comparing the total of the sales with the total of the skeleton ledger or monthly statement that every sale has been billed and recorded on the monthly statement and skele ton ledger.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 has the Wood Yor hollow center ortion a extending the full length ofthe c v inder or platen, with the end A3 reduced in diameter to the length of the divisin or section B. The outer eov ering b of the'division or section B has an interior lining or backing b2, with a turned rim or flange b3 at its end, into which is threaded the attaching-screwffor the ratchet-plate or disk F. The end of the yWood or hollow center a has entered thereinto a metal rim or band b4, and at the commencementv of the reduced portion A3' of the cylinder or platen is 'a metal `baud b5, which bands b* and If 125 form a bearing or track on which the` divi. sion or sectionB of the cylinder or platen can turn, the bands b4 and b furnishing aprotection for the ivood or hollow center of the cylinder or platen. The other appliances 13o i in connection With the construction of Fig. 1 can be used with` the form of cylinder of Fig. 3.
The divided cylinder or platen, withl the do s and paWls and the ratchet-wheels or dis s for advancing or turning each division or section thereof independently and forA turning and advancing both divisions or sections simultaneously, enables a bill, statement, report, or other record to be-made on -lone division 4or section andan abstract,
jig,
monthly statement, skeleton ledger, or other memoranda to be made on the other division or section without changing the operating appliancesv and Without removing the blank or form'ior vthe abstract, statement, skeleton g ledger, or other memoranda from its' division by Letters Patent, is-
