iig-lining 13. The base 14, preferporcelain, Ais also secured to the bracket fl by means of the screws 10 and forms n support ior the terminal 15, secured ivre-to by screw 16 and bent at the angle for 'ijzigenient with one of the cord-terminals :nid 1S et if). The lining 13 forms the other terminal by means of" the contact-plate 20, which is electrically connected with thev lining. A switch is .interposed between the co'rd-terinimils 1'7 and 1S it contact-plate 20. This snf'itch comprises e button 21 of insulating materiel inserted in the bracket 4,v so to slide in and out and provided with a coller LZ2. ingly in conter-t with the plate 20, so that the button 21 normally 'projects throuvh the casing. A Contact 24 1s secured to this button :ind is adopted to engage. contact-plate to close the circuit when the button is forced inward, cord-terminal 17 being in electrical connectionwith Contact 24. Casing 2 is provided at its upper end with an opening7 having` en' insulating-button 25 therein for supporting the cord-terminals. A heater-plug 26 is adopted to be screwed into the socket 9 and close the circuit from lining 13 to contact 15. This plug forms no part of my invention, und I shall therefore not attempt to describe it in detail. The heating part of this plug consists oi" a line wire 26 of resist- :mee material inserted in the body7 of porcelain or other insulating mai-veria] 27 and having a screw-threaded condiirting-surfzwe 28, whichv forms one terminal of the resistance- Wire, while the Contact L9 in the end of thnplug forms the other. A sheet of mim is piumini over the 'resiste-n e-wiro end e Cep 30, pro-- vided with en opening, secures thesiune in place.
'The operation of my device will be readily miderstmid 'from the above description.
When it is desired to use my eig:1r-iight l,'
the handle is grasped by the hunthwhile the" A spring 23 holdsthe collar yieldxoo the circuit is closed betweencontact-plate 2 .and contact 24. Current then passes v .through thecord terminal 18 to contact 15,
thence to contact 29, through the resistance- Wire in the plug to the lining 13, through the switch, and back to terminal 17. The resistance-wire is thus heated to redness and the radiant heat is suiicient to ignitea cigar "jffteleseo ing casings, a socket inclosed there^ i9.'
on the outside of the mica, thereby forming a convenient and efiicient lighter. h
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. An igniting device comprising telescoping casings, a socket carrying circuit-termina s anda switch therefor within the same, said casings being cut away to form an opening into said receptacle.
2. device comprising telescop telescoping casings, a, socket, a heating unit therefor, and a switch within said. casing, said unit and switch projecting through the said casing.
4. An igniting device comprising a pair of ein, .an a heating unit supported by said receptacleand projecting through the casing.
'Lgf'.y igniti4 device comprising a casing @support there 'ora socket provided wit circuit-terminals mounted in said casing, and
a switch 'within and projecting through the said casing in longitudinal alinement with said socket,
6. An igniting device comprising a casin a support therefor, a socket provided Wit circuit-terminals mounted in said, casing, a heating unit in said socket, and -a switch within and projecting through the said casing in longitudinal alinement with said socket. A
7. An igniting device comprising a pair of casings having an opening therein, va support for said casings, a Vsocket provided with'circuit-terminals mounted in said. opening, a heating unit in said socket, and a switch for. closing'a circuit through said unit within'the casing and projecting through the same in longitudinal alinement with said socket.'
8. An igniting device comprising a handle, a pair of telescoping casings mounted thereon and provided with anopening, a heating 55 unit in said. opening, and a switch within one of said casings for closing a circuit through said heating unit, said handle, heating unit, o
and switch all being in longitudinal alinement.
rln witness whereof I have hereunto set my hafhdthis 22d day of September-,1905. JULIUS C. TOURNIER. Witnesses:
