G AT E No. 831,487. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 18, 1906. Application filed June 21,1906. Serial No. 322,713. To all whom it may concern: tends throughout the length of the edges 1) and hereinafter set forth. On the inner upright bar H of the gate is fixed a horizontal metallic loop or staple J, which receives in its bight the stud C on the hingepost B and serves in connection with the said stud to form the upper hinge of the gate, while on the said inner upright bar H at a point below the loop or staple J is fixed a metallic loop or staple K, which is disposed at right angles to the loop or staple J. This loop or staple K tightly holds a horizontallydisposed plate M, of metal or other material suitable to the purpose of my invention, in the rear edge of which are notches N, de signed to engagethe fixed wings E in the manner hereinafter po nted out in detail.
The horizontal plate M serves in connection with the wings E to form the lowerhinge of the gate, and it will be apparent that when the gate is closed it will rest'in a horizontal position and remain of itself in such position,
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. TEABY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to farm-gates of the kind that are adapted to be opened by a person in an approaching vehicle without the necessity of such person getting out of the vehi ole; and it contemplates a simple and ineX- pensive farmate a embodying such a c, for a purpose that it 1S adapted to remain of itself in its open position and also in its closed osition.

The said post B is provided at its upper end with an upwardly-extending stud 0, having a flat horizontal arm D, and it is also provided at an intermediate point of its height with two fixed and laterally-extend ing wings E of U shape, and is further provided in its face at a point between the said wings E with a depression F for a purpose presently pointed out.
G is a swinging gate which in general may be of any construction compatible with the purpose of my invention. In the practical operation of my novel gate it will be seen that a person in a vehicle approaching the gate has but to pull down on the adjacent handle S of the cable R, when the gate will be caused to swing open in a direction away from the vehicle, and this with but a minimum amount of effort on the part of the said person. When the gate is opened, as stated, it will remain of itself in such position, and then after the vehicle has passed through the gateway the gate may be closed conveniently open the gate, 1 provide posts proaches the the upright bar H with mote from the gate and its by swinging it to a slight extent away from the upright A, when it will gravitate to its closed position and remain of itself in such position.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that my novel gate is simple and inexpensive in construction and embodies no delicate parts such as are likely to be afiected by the weather or to get out of order after a short period of use.
I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a definite understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of arts, as such changes or modifications ma e made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
With the lever-plate I arranged as shown it will be observed that when a party apgate and pulls on the adjacent end of the cable R the gate will be caused to swing in a direction away from the party. Now I desire it understood that when referred the lever-plate I may be arrange on its straight edge recurved edge adacent to the same, when the cable R may be arranged on said lever-plate, so that when a party approaches the gate and pulls on the adjacent end of said cable the gate will be caused to swing open in the direction toward the party. This latter arrangement is ad vantageous for many reasons, chief among which is that a teamster will naturally open the gate slowly and carefully, for if he did J otherwise the gate swinging toward him in a violent manner would be likely to frighten I his horses.
Having described my invention, what I I ent, is
