vm... mwmmmwuluwm UNITED STATES To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs O. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in vthe county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Table-Levelers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to table-levelers, and has for its objects to produce a simple `inexpensive device of this character which may be readily applied for use, one which in practice can be conveniently manipulated for leveling the table, and one wherein the adjusting element or screw will be held firmly against end thrust within the table-leg.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a portion of a table having its leg equipped with a leveling device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a section takenon the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the leveling element or screw` Fig. 4 is a detail view of the floor-plate.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a table having a leg 2 secured to the table in any appropriate manner, these parts being of any suitable construction and material, eX- cept that the leg is provided at its upper end with a vertical chamber or recess 3 and has a central longitudinal opening 4 communicating at its upper end with said recess.
Fitted in theopening 4 andeXtended longitudinally through the leg 2 is an adjusting element or bolt 5, screw-threaded throughout a portion of its length and at its normally lower end, as at 6, and provided at its lower end, which projects below the adjacent end of the leg, with a transverse opening or slot 7, there being formed on the upper end of the bolt 5 a reduced screw-threaded portion or extension 8 designed to project into the chamber 3 for the reception of a bearing member or head 9 and a clamping member or nut 10, there being tapped onto the threaded portion 6 of. the bolt a clamping member or nut 11, which bears against the lower end of the leg 2.
Secured upon the upper end of the leg within the recess 3 and by means of fastening members or screws 12 is a bearing-plate 13,

TABLE-LEVELER.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
provided with a central opening through which the extension 8 projects, there being attached to the ioor or other foundation upon which the table rests a base-plate 14, provided with a central depression or seat 15, in which the lower end of the element 5 fits, it being noted that the end of the element is formed to turn freely in the recess 15 and that theplate 14 is iiXedly secured in place by fastening members or screws 16.
In practice when it is desired to vary the level of the table a suitable instrument is inserted through the opening 7 and the element or bolt 5 rotated, whereby it will, owing to its threaded engagement with the clamping members 10 and 11, be fed longitudinally 7o through the leg 2. It is to be observed that owing to the lower end of the element 5 being formed to fit and turn readily in the' recess 15 the element may be readily manipulated for the purpose mentioned,- and, furthermore, that the clamping members 10 and 11 serve 'to eifectually prevent endwise movement or thrust of the bolt.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that in attaining these ends minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a device of the class described, and in combination with a table and its leg, the latter having a recess at its upper end and a central bore communicating with said recess, a leveling element extending longitudinally through said bore and provided with terminal threaded portions, clamping members engaged respectively with said threaded portions and adapted to bear on opposite ends of the leg to prevent endwise thrust of the element therein, the element being projected beyond the lower end of the leg and provided with a transverse opening and a base-plate having a seat in which the lower end of the element is iitted for rotation.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JAMES O. WILLIAMS.
