Be it known that I, HARRY V. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tiosa, in the county of Fulton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Coupling, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in railway car-couplings, the object being to provide a novel form of coupling that will not only automatically couple when two cars are brought together, but will uncouple should an accident occur such, fo'r instance, as the derailing of a car, tipping over of a car, or a car breaking down at the center.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the general description.
I will describe a car-coupling embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a car-coupling embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan thereof, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan. Fig. 5 indicates the position of parts for automatically uncoupling should a car be longitudinally tilted through accident.
Referring to the drawings, 5 and 6 indicate two corresponding coupling-heads, each one being longitudinally recessed, as indicated at 7, in which longitudinal recess a plunger-rod 8 is movable. The said recesses and plungerrods are in one coupling-head at the opposite side to the recess and rod of the other coupling-head. Coupling-links 9 have swinging connection with the heads. These couplinglinks are provided at the rear ends with upward extensions 10, which are pivotally connected to the push-rods, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. The free ends are provided with upwardly-extended hook portions 11, de-
l signed to engage in recesses 12, formed in the coupling-heads, the recess 12 of one couplinghead being at the opposite side to that of the recess in the other coupling-head, and these recesses open outward, the object of which will hereinafter appear.
Each head, at its end and at about its center, is provided with a longitudinal chamber 13, which under certain conditions is designed to receive the rods 8, and these openings or recesses may be also employed for receiving an ordinary link coupling held in place by a pin passed through vthe vertical perforation 14.
Mounted to swing in a slot 15, opening outward from a recess 7, is a yoke 16, having a chain connection 17 with the forward end of a lever 18, the rear end of said lever being weighted, as clearly indicated in the drawings, and this rear end has a chain connection 19 with the crank portion 2O of a shaft 21, mounted to swing on the end of the car, and the shaft is provided at one end with a handle 22. This shaft mechanism is designed for uncoupling the heads manually-that is, a person by swinging the handles 22 upward will rock the levers 18, and the free ends thereof, engaging with shoulders 23 on the yokes 16, will be released and through the medium of the chains 17 will rock the yokes to force the rods 8 upward and out of engagement with the ends of the coupling-heads, permitting the couplinglinks to fall downward. The weighted levers by engaging with said shoulders 23 will support the locking-links in coupling position.
In the operation before the coupling the rods 8 will be extended upward and the links swung downward. When two couplingheads come together, the rods 8 coming in contactthat is, the rod of one head with the end of the other head-the said rods will be forced inward, causing thecoupling-links to be swung upward to engage their hook portions in the recess 12. Should the car be derailed in one direction-such, for instance, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 4-the coupling-heads of course will be deflected laterally one with relation to the other and the rod S of a coupling-head will pass into the chamber or recess 13 of the other head, thus permitting the coupling-links to fall. Should the car be derailed in the opposite direction, the hooks will slide laterally out of the recesses 12 and the rods 8 will move forward, passing over the inclines 24, formed on the top surfaces of the coupling-heads.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 1 Patent- 1. A car-coupling comprising couplingheads longitudinally recessed, and also provided at its end with a chamber or recess, push-rods movable in 'the longitudinal relOO IOS
cesses, swinging yokes through which the rods pass, weighted levers for operating the yokes, said heads at the under side being provided with recesses, and hook-shaped links pivoted lIO to the heads and having swinging connection with said rods, the hook portion of one link being adapted to engage in the last-named recess of the opposite head.
2. A car-coupling comprising couplingheads longitudinally recessed, and each having an outwardly-opening recess at its lower side, the said recess of one head being on the opposite side to that of the other, rods movable lengthwise in the longitudinal recesses, coupling-links having swinging connection with the heads, and pivotal connection with said rods, the coupling-links having hook ends for engaging in said outwardly-opening recesses, yokes having swinging connection 15 with the heads, weighted levers having chain connection with said yokes, and crank-shafts mounted on cars, with the cranks of which said levers have connection.
