JEREMIAH MURPHY, OF LEADVILLE, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES T. OARNAHAN, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
DRILLING AND BORING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed November 18, 1905. Serial No. 288.076.
T0 ztZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leadville, in the county of Lake and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Drilling and Boring Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a drilling and boring machine particularly adapted for drilling an axial bore through a drill-steel employed in percussive or other drilling devices used in mining; and the object thereof is to provide a machine of such character which shall be extremely simple in its construction, strong, feeding the work to the bit by gravity, eflicient in its use, provided with means for rotating the work in a direction opposite to that of the rotation of the bit, drilling or boring upwardly in the material in a vertical direction, thereby enabling the chips or borings to fall out very rapidly during the drilling'or boring operation, enabling the drilling or boring operation to be had in a very rapid manner, and comparatively inexpensive to set up.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention; but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout both the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a machine in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, a machine in accordance with this invention comprises a vertically-extending frame formed of a pair of uprights 1 2, connected together at their tops by the entablature 8 and suitably spaced apart, so as to form a guideway 4. The frame at its bottom is fixedly secured to a base 5, and the said frame constitutes a support for certain elements of the machine in a manner as hereinafter set forth and also constitutes a guide for certain elements of the machine in a manner as hereinafter set forth.
Secured to near the lower end of the vertically-extending frame through the medium of the holdfast devices 6 is a combined tool and tool-driving means supporting member, and the said member consists of a verticallyextending portion 7, which projects through the guideway 4 and bears against the front and rear of the supporting-frame. Projecting from the front of said member 7, at the top thereof, is a laterally-extending arm 8, and at the bottom of said member 7 a laterally-projecting arm 9 is provided and which is arranged in vertical alinement with the arm 8. The arm 8 near its free end is provided with an opening, and at the free end of the arm 9 a bearing-socket is provided. Extending through the opening in the arm8 and engaging in the bearingsocket in the arm 9 is a ro tatable tool-operating shaft 10, which carries a collar 11, abutting against the arm 8, so as to prevent vertical movement in one direction of the shaft 10. Below the arm 8 the shaft 10 is provided with a bevel-gear 12, having a boss 13, which bears against the lower face of the arm 8, so as to prevent vertical movement-in the other direction of the shaft 10. Upon the upper end of the shaft 10 a chuck 14 is secured, so that said chuck will rotate with the shaft 10. The manner of rotating the shaft 10 will be hereinafter referred to. To the said chuck 14 is secured a vertically-extending tool 15 in the form of a drill-bit. Journaled in the member 7 and extending from each face thereof is a driven shaft 16, having its forward end provided with a bevel-gear 17, meshing with the gear 12, so that when the shaft 16 is rotated the meshing of the gear 17 with the gear 12 will cause the operation of said gear 12 and the rotating of the shaft 10, which in turn will rotate the chuck 14 and tool 15. The holder 17 is provided with a boss 18 for preventing lateral movement of the shaft 16 in one direction, and said shaft 16 carries a collar 19, which engages the rear face of the member 7, so as to prevent lateral movement of the shaft 16 in an opposite direction. Upon the shaft 16 rearwardly of the member 7 is mounted a fixed and loose pulley 2O 21, respectively. The loose pulley 21 is connected, through the medium of a shiftable belt connection 22, with a driving-pulley 23, supportcd in any suitable manner and which in turn is connected to a prime mover, (not shown,) or in lieu of a connection between the loose pulley 21 and driving-pulley 23 the loose pulley 21 can be directly connected to the prime mover. A belt-shifter 24 is provided and which is suitably connected to the vertical frame, as at 25, and also engages the belt connection 22, as at 26, and the function of said belt-shifter is to shift the belt 22 on and off the pulley 20, so that when shifted upon said pulley 20 motion will be imparted to the shaft 16, but when shifted off said pulley 20 and upon the loose pulley 21 the operation of the shaft 16 will be discontinued. From the foregoing construction it is evident that when the belt 22 is shifted upon the pulley 20 motion will be imparted to the shaft 16 and the tool rotated, owing to the connection set forth between the chuck and the shaft 16.
Connected to the vertically extending frame is a gravity-movable member for feeding by gravity the material operated upon by the toolthat is to say, said member is adapted to feed the material down over the tool during the drilling or boring operation of the tool, so that the said drilling or boring operation will be had upwardly through the material, and by such an arrangement the chips or borings will readily fall out of the bore as fast as they are made. Said gravity-movable member consists of a T-shaped body portion 27, which extends through the guideway 4 and is connected to the vertically-extending frame through the medium of the plate 28, secured to said body portion 27 by the holdfast devices 29. Projecting forwardly from the front of the body portion 27 is a laterallyextending arm 30, through which extends the shank of awork-holder 31. The work-holder 31 is in the form of a chuck and is adapted to I have secured there n the upper end of the material which is to be operated on, a binding screw 32 being provided for this purpose, and the material which is to be operated on is shown in the form of a bar of steel, as at 33. The work-holder 31 is enlarged so that it will abut against the arm .30 and the shank of the work-holder 31 is connected, through the medium of the nut 34, to a vertically-extending shaft 35, said nut 34 bearing against the top of the arm 30,so that during the vertical movement of the said gravity-movable member the work-holder 31 and shaft 35 will be carried therewith, consequently feeding the material in the manner as heretofore stated to the tool 15. The vertically-extending shaft 35 is keyed to a rotatable gear 36, so that when the said gear 36 is rotated the shaft 35 will move therewith; but the said shaft 35 will be permitted to move in a vertical manner. A keyway 37 is provided in the shaft 35, and in the said keyway 37 engages a key formed on the gear 36, so that said shaft 35 will be permitted to move in a vertical manner during the rotation of the gear 36. Mounted upon the top of the vertically-extending frame is a bearing 38, having a forwardly-projecting apertured arm 39, which acts as a support for the gear 36 and also acts as a guide for the shaft 35, said shaft 35 extending through the opening in the arm 39. Journaled in the bearing 38 is a laterally-extending shaft 40, having the forward end thereof provided with a bevel-pinion 41, which meshes with the gear 36. The said shaft 40 is mounted for rotation within the bearing 38 and when rotated is adapted to impart motion to the gear 36, owing to the meshing of the pinion 40 with said gear 36. The rear end of the shaft 40 carries a pulley 42 ,connected, through the medium of the belt 43, with the pulley 20. The arrangement of the gears 12 and 17 with respect to the gears 39 and 40 is such that the shaft 35 will rotate in an opposite direction with respect to the direction of movement of the tool 15.
A guidemember for centering the work is indicated by the reference character 44 and is suitably connected to the vertically-extending frame and comprises in its construction a laterally-extending arm 46, having an opening therein, in which is secured a rotatable sleeve 47, the latter being connected to the work, as shown.
A suitable hoist 48 is employed for elevating the gravity-movable feed member when occasion so requires, said hoist being connected, as at 49, to said gravity-movable mem ber and also connected, as at 50, to the arm 39. By such an arrangement it is evident that when the feed member has arrived at the length of its travel it can be returned to its elevated position through the medium of the hoist.
Although a rotating mechanism for the work and tool is set up so as to operate the work in an opposite direction with respect to the direction of the rotation of the tool, it will be evident that the operating mechanism can be so arranged that the tool can remain stationary and the work rotate or the work held stationary and the tool rotate.
Although the machine is designed primarily for making axial bores in drill-steel used for mining purposes, yet the machine is adapted for any purposes and usages wherein it is found applicable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A drilling-machine comprising a verticallyextending frame provided with a guideway, a gravity and vertically-movable feed member extending through said guideway, slidably connected to the frame and provided with a forwardly-extending arm, a work-holder rotatably connected to said arm and movable vertically therewith, a supporting member fixed to said frame and projecting forwardly therefrom, a vertically-extending shaft journaled in said supporting member and carrying the tool, a bearing mounted upon the top of said frame and having a forwardly-extending arm, a vertically-movable work-holderoperating shaft arranged at the front of the frame, extending through the forwardly-extending arm of said bearing and having its lower end connected with the work-holder for rotating it, said work-ho1der-opcrating shaft being moved in a vertical direction by said gravity-movable member during the vertical movement of the latter, a gear splined to the work-holder-opcrating shaft, a gear connected to the tool-carrying shaft, a transversely-extending shaft journaled in said bearing and provided with a pinion on i one end meshing with the gear splined to the work-holder-operating shaft, a transverselyextending shaft journaled in said supporting member and provided on one end with a gear engaging the gear connected to said toolcarrying shaft, means for operating said transversely-extending shafts, and means operatively connected with said transverselyextending shafts for rotating the work-holder and the tool.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
