KBTTLE COVER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 19, 1905.

ELLA E. JOHNSTON, OF LYLE, WASHINGTON.
KETTLE-COVER.
1'0 (LLL whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA E. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residin at Lyle, in the county'of Klickitat, State of Vashl'ngton, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Kettle-Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vessel-covers.
One object of the invention is to provide a cover for pots, kettles, pans, or other vessels with means for locking the same against accidental displacemen Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an exceedingly simple, inexensive, durable, and eflicientV means for positively locking a cover upon a vessel and to also fasten in its open position the supplemental closure of the cove With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will .be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claim Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention, illustrating the supplemental lid in open position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention, illustrating the supplemental lid in closed position. Fig.y 3 is an elevation of a vessel having my improved cover fastened thereto. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line a a of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates a vessel of any variety, and 2 the cover therefor. l
Pivotally mounted upon the cover centrally thereof for vertical movement and rotation with respect thereto is a knob 3, having oppositely-disposed projections 4 and 5, formed rigidly therewith. Connecting the outer end of each projection 4 and 5 is an arm 6 and 7, the arms being pivotally connected, as at 8, to the respective projections with their opposite outer ends bent over the edge of the cover for engagement with the outer f wall of the vessel, the bends of the arms being l Specification of Letters Patent. Application nea August 19,1905. serial No.' 274.870.
` a supplemental lid 15,

the reference characters 9 and 10, respectively. By reason of the fact that the projections 4 and 5 of the knob 3 are designed to rotate with the latter and the arms being pivoted to the said projections the arms have a sliding movement ,upon the upper face indicated by of the cover 2, the arms being guided in their sliding movement by the guides 11.
' Secured upon opposite sides of the knob 3 upon the upper face of the cover 2 are studs 12 and 13,`which are designed to hold the projections 4 and 5 of the knob 3 a ainst movement, and thereby positively ho d the bent or hooked ends 9 and 10 of the respective arms in engagement with the ed e of the cover and the outer wall of the vesse In Fig. 1 the coveris shown as fastened to the vessel, and when it is desired to remove the covcr from the latter the knob should be raised, so as to permit the projections 4 and 5 to be rotated above the studs 12 and 13 to permit the said projections to assume alinement with the arms 6 and 7, which when alining move away from each other, causing the hooks 9 and 10 of each arm to be removed from engagement with the edge of the outer wall of the vessel.
The cover 2 is perforated, as at 14, to permit of draining of the vessel when desired or to permit of the escape of steam, there being hingedly connected, as at 16, to the cover 2 and adapted to be thrown over the perforations 14in the cover roper, 2, to prevent the escape of steam or t e draining of the vessel. This supplemental lid 15 may be held back vented from accidentally falling over the perforations 14 by reason of the fact that the projection 4 of the knob 3 extends over the edge of the same when thrown backwardly. In other words, my improved locking means not only locks the cover proper upon the vessel, but in its locking position also locks the supplemental lid 15 back upon the cover 2, thereby performing a double function.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention embodies such characteristics that the cover will be held tightly thereupon and that slipping of the cover from the edges of the vessel w1ll be positively prevented, thereby insuring proper steaming of the vegetables or other articles confined within the vessel. Another feature to be appreciated is that the supplemental lid 15 may be readily moved backwardly from over the projections in the cover to permit of a draining of the vessel or upon the cover 2 and pre- IIC the emission of -steam therefrom, the said supplemental lid being held in its open position, if desired.
What is claimed is- A cover for vessels havin perforations therein, a hinged supplementa lid for covering said perforations, a knob arranged centrally of the cover for rotation thereupon and vertlcal movement with respect thereto, said knob having op ositely-disposed projections, a stud arranged) upon each side of the knob, and an arm pivotally connected to each 0f said projections and provided with a hook for en agement over the ed e of the cover, the sald studs being arrange upon opposite sides of the res p ective projections to hold the hooked ends oipthearms in engagement With the edge of the cover and to simultaneous] fasten the su plemental lid in its open posltion, the saidp alinement to release the hooked ends of the arms' from the edge of the cover and the locked position of the supplemental lid.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ELLA E. JOHNSTON.
