UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NUT-LOCKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Yatented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed November 13,1905- Sarial No. 287.002.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER HENERY FREE- MANTLE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Smiths Falls, county of Lanark, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locking Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to nut-locks.
The object of my invention is to provide means for locking the nuts on aXle-boX bolts and similar bolts on railway-cars; and my invention consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of an ordinary railway-car truck, showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device of my invention, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section through such device.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a truck, B the axle-box carried thereby, C
the bolts securing the axle-box, D the nuts on the bolts, and E the lower truck-strap, all of which are of ordinary and usual construction.
4 designates the side walls, and 5 the end wall, of a locking-clip. The side walls 4 are connected intermediate of their ends by the transverse webs 6, so that the sockets 6 are formed by the side walls 4, the end wall 5, and the webs 6. These sockets may be of suitable dimensions to closely fit the ordinary sizes and forms of nuts used on axle-box bolts. The side walls 4 are provided with a plurality of openings 7, through which may be disposed the split pins 8.
In the operation of the device the side walls 4 are disposed on opposite sides of the lower truck-strap E and the pins 8 inserted through the opening 7, so that they bear on the upper and lower faces of the truck-strap. By having the'plurality of openings 7 the device may be adjusted to suit different forms of truck construction.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A nut-lock comprising a casing formed with side walls and an end wall and also formed with integral webs connecting the side walls and forming sockets therewith, and the side walls being provided with openings adapted to receive securing members.
2. A nut-lock comprising a casing formed with side walls and having an end wall, and formed with sockets, one wall of one of the sockets being formed by said end wall, and said casing being provided with rows of openings adapted to receive securing members.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
WALTER HENERY FREEMAN'ILE.
