FRANCIS H. AUDLEY,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SADDLE-STIRRUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 18, 1906.
Application filed November 10, 1905. Serial No. 286,643.
To all whom, it nutty concern:
Be it known that I, FnANors H. AUDLEY, a States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Saddle-Stirrups, of
which the following 1s a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to saddle-stirrups; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is particularly designed for use by mounted police and cavalry, but which may be used by all a further object being to provide a stirrup of the class speci fied with means to prevent accident or injury to a rider when thrown by having his foot and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a saddle-stirru constructed as hereinafter described and c aimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the. following specification, of which the accomp anying drawings form a part, in which the sepa' rate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which-- Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a saddle-stirrup constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a modification; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a sectional side view of a stirrup, showing a modification, the section being taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 5; and Fig. 5, a sectional view of the stirrup on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, I provide a stirrup the body or foot-receiving portion a of which is composed of wood, leather, hard-pressed fiber pulp, or any other suitable material, and mounted between the upper ends of the upwardly-directed side members a of the body or foot-receiving portion of the stirrup is a roller 5, the said roller in its construction and connections being somewhat similar to the corresponding parts shown, described, and claimed in an a plication for'Letters Patent of the United tates filed by me March 14, 1905, Serial No. 249,983. The roller 1) serves as means for attaching a stirrup-strap c in the usual manner, and the construction of said roller forms no part of this invention, and a similar roller or attaching device constructed in any desired manner may be employed. The stirrup is also provided with a hood cl, which is secured thereto and which ranges downwardly and forwardly, and secured transversely of the central bottom portion a of the stirrup is a metal plate 6, which ranges forwardly and upwardly to form a forwardly-directed arm 6 having an upwardly andbackwardly directed member a which lies flush with the inner side of the front of the hood d, and said plate 6 and the arm e thereof and the supplemental arm member 6 are preferably covered on bothsides with leather, and the upper portion of the arm member 6 is provided with a longi tudinal slot a through which is passed a pin 6 which secures said arm member to the hood 01, while enabling said arm member to slide up and down on the inner side of said hood, and this construction holds the hood d in pro er shape and prevents the same from wrink ing or crimping transversely. In the form of construction shown the plate member e beneath the bottom portion a? of the stirrup also serves to hold a rubber pad f on the top portion of the tread of said stirrup,
the opposite edges of said pad being bent over the opposite sides of the bottom ortion a of the stirrup and being held in p ace by the plate 6, which is riveted or otherwise se cured to the stirrup, as shown at f Secured to the arm member 6 as shown at f is a backwardly directed and upwardlycurved supplemental spring-arm e, the free end of which is curved upwardly around the roller 5, and this supplemental arm member 6 serves to prevent the foot from being caught in the stirrup in case the rider should be thrown. In the form of construction shown the toe of the riderwill press sli htly on the arm member 6 and this causes a slight downward-and-upward movement of the arm member'e but the slot 0 and the pin 6 permit of this movement, and the hood (1 is always held in proper position and in proper form. The construction shown in Fig. 2 is the same in all respects as that shown in Fig. 1, except that the upper end portion of the arm member c is curved backwardly and upwardly to form the arm member e and the connection of the arm 6 with the hood (1 is made lower down than as shown in Fig. 1.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a modification of the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, in which the bottom part c of the stirru is provided with a rubber cushion g, and t e spring-arm guard member composing the parts 6, e c and e, as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, is in the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 composed of a spring-wire bent centrally toform a loop-shaped member h, the end portions of the separate sides of said loop-shaped member being passed over and transversely of the bottom ortion a of the stirrup and the ends thereo bent downwardly and transversely of the bottom of the bottom portion a of the stirrup and being secured thereto by staples, rivets, or similar devices i. The end parts k of the separate side parts of the wire which is bent to form the cop-shaped device h are thus made to hold the cushion g on the bottom portion of the stirrup in position, and the said parts or side members of said wire are then brought a proximately together forwardly of the bottom portion of the stirrup, as shown at it, and carried upwardly and passed through a keeper k secured to the inner side of the hood d, and above which the loop-shaped member 7t, formed by said wire members, is carried backwardly and u wardly partially around the roller 1), as clear y shown'in Fig. 4, and this construction forms a spring guardarm connected with the bottom portion a of the stirrup and comprising a forwardly-di-' rected member h, an upwardly-directed portion W, and a backwardly and upwardly curved portion b the general form of which is the same as that of the parts 6 and e, shown in Fig. 1, together with the bottom portion of the part 6 The spring arm-guard shown in Figs. 4 and 5 also serves to hold the hood (1 in proper shape at all times, and said hood is secured to the sides of thestirrup as shown at 7' in Fig. 5 or in any other desired manner.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that this invention comprises a guard member composed of the parts e, e and e in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, or of the parts h, h,
and h in Figs. 4 and 5, and the body portion of the stirrup may be constructed in any desired manner; but I prefer to employ the construction shown and described in the application for Letters Patent hereinbefore referred to.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A saddle-stirrup provided between the top side portions thereof with a strap-attaching device, and a hood, and a safety device and guard member of spring material secured transversely of the bottom ortion of the stirrup and extending forward y and upwardly and in contact with the front portion of the hood and provided with a backwardly and upwardly curved arm which terminates adjacentto the strap-attaching device, substantially as shown and described.
2. A saddle-stirrup provided between the top side portions thereof with a strap-attaching device, and a hood, and a safety device and guard member of spring material secured transversely of the bottom ortion of the stirrup and extending forward y and upwardly and in contact with the front portion of the hood and provided with a backwardly and upwardly curved arm which terminates adjacent to the strap-attaching device, said safety device and guard member being also slidably connected with the hood, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 9th day of November, 1905.
