Description

WILLIAM H. lUN'llUS,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF COLUMBUS. OHIQ.
Sl-HELD FOR CAR-HANDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 23,
Patented Sept. 18, 1906 1906. Serial in. 319.048.
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, \Vummu ll. PONTJUS, a citizen of the Urited States, residing at Columbus. in the county ol Franklin and State oi Ohio, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Shields ['or (Tar- Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a shield for carhandles, and has for its object the provision of a shield arranged in such manner upon the side posts of 0 on or summer cars as to preveut the ham is upon. said side posts from being grasped by persons who occupy the seat in front of said handle. while leaving said handle accessible to persons who occupy seats in the rear thereof, thus requiring poo sons alighting from said cars to face the front thereof.
It is a well-known fact that many accidents are caused by people facingthe rear of the car when alighting, and the present in.
vention is designed to provide simple and efficient means for preventing some, if not all, of these accidents.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a summeroar, illustrating my invention applied there to, and. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section upon line a: m of Fig. 1.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the car-floor, and the numerals 6 designate adjacent seats in said car. The usual swinginghacks 7 are carried by brackets 8, said brackets being pivoted i the usual and wellknown manner to the sir e posts 9. The usual handles lO'are secured to these side posts.
So far the parts described are all of the 'We1l-kn0wn construction suchhs may be found upon most of the street-cars now in use.
In carrying out My invention I secure shields 12 in front of the handles 10 by means of fastenin devices 13. By referring to Fig. 2 it may e seen that the shields 12 are arranged upon opposite sides of the handles upon opposite sides of the car. reason for thus arranging thes shields is that by so doingit is unnecessary to have shields which may be shifted from one side l of the handle to the other, but a plain metallic shield im novably mounted may be used. Passengers are always re uired to alight upon the right-hand side 0 the car. ltiollows, therefore, that when the car is 0- ing in the direction of the arrow 11,, t e shields shown at the up er side of Fig. 2 are upon the right-hand si e of thecar and are consequently in'proper position to serve the objects of the present invention, while when the car is going in the direction of the arrow 0 the shields at the lower ortion of Fig. 2 are upon the right-hand si .e of the ear and likewise serve said purpose.
From. the foregoing, description it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein providcdifor accoin lishing the objects of the invention; but wlnYe the elementsherein vention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes Within its purview such changes as maybe made within the scope of the appended claims.
What I. claim is 1. The combination with scar-handle, of an immovable shield secured in position in front.of said handle. x
2. The combination with a car-handle and its sup citing-(post, of an'immovahle shield secure to sai post in such position as to prei' ent said handle being grasped from the out of said post. i
3. The combination with the can-handles arranged upon 0 )posite sides of open cars, of shields arrange in front of sa d handles; said shields being ar'ran ed at the trout sides of said handles upon one side of said car.
WILLIAM Ii. .i-(WTIUS Witnesses:
, G. C. SHEPHERD,
A. L. PHELPS.
4. The combination with a plurality car-handles and their supportmgpcsts, of it .r the hallshown suddescribedare well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are 'lns, tended it is to be understood that the in 755.
