Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. raises.
Anuman ne@ June so. 1906. .serial no. 324.168.
To all whom it may concern; l v
Be it known that I, GABRIEL MUnLAsrrs, a
subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary,
residing -at Lyndora,l in the countyof Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in# 'vented certain new and useful Im rovements in Rail-Joints, of which the fol owingmis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. j
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rail-joints; andthe invention has for its object to provide novel means for firmly holding the confronting ends.of two sections of iails, whereby they cannot be displaced by rolling-stock passing over the same. l
The invention aims to dispense with the A nuts and bolts heretofore used in connection with rail-joints, and sto provide positive meansl for support-ing the ends of rails between tw'o tiesl or sleepers. y To this end 'Ip have devised 4a novel chair and fish-bar which lly hold the conrronting ends' of two rails and prevent said rails from spreading, at the same time. V
permitting of expansion andy contraction of said rails.
The detail construction. ofvmyl improved joint will be presenti described and specific.
vally pointed out in t e appended claims. j
Referring to the drawings forming art of this specification, like numerals of re erence designate corresponding parts throughout; the several views, in which-- i Figure 1 is a crossfse'ctional view equipped with my improved joints. Fig. 2 is Va perspective view of a joint. Fig. 3v is a cross-sectional view taken o line of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on line y 'y ofv Fig. 2. Fi 5 is a perspective view of my improved c air; and Fi lis a similar view ofa fish-bar usedwith t e chair, the bar being illustrated as partially inverted. l
To put my invention into practice, l construct my improved jointof a chair 1' and a detachable fish-bar 2, said bar being adapted to firmly hold the ends of two rails 3 and-4 v v spiked to said chair and embracing said rails,
. upon the chair 1.
. 55 be hereinaner described. .The base-plate' 5 The chair 1 comprises a baselate A5, carrying at its one edge a reinforced 'sh-bar, said bar having a flange 7 adapted to brace the outer. sides Aof the heads 8 ofthe rails and 4. The inner side of the fish-bar is recessed, as at 9, and rovided with a pluralityof recesses or poc ets 10, the object of whichwill.
of a track lat o osite edge. and adjacent toits ends which spikes pass to secure said chair, rais, and fish-bar 2 to ties orsleepers 12.
' The rails'y 3 and 4 are adapted to rest upon The rails are held by spikes 14, whichv are driven through the innermost openings 11 of the base-plate `5.' To prevent longitudinal movement of said rails, the web portions L5 said openings are mounted pins 17,*which enter the recesses or pockets 16 of the iishebar 6. These pins, in conjunction with the sh-bar 2, which will now be described, serve to prevent longitudinal movement of said rails.
The fish-bar 2 is adapted to seat upon the chair lland embrace the rails 3 and 4. The inner'side of the fish-.bar is provided with recesses or pockets 18 to receive the ends of the pins 1.7, while the base portion ofthe bar 2 is edge'of the bar is cut away, as at 20, in order that spikes 21 may engage thebar 2 and pass through the outermost openings 11 of the chair.
From the fore oing description it will be observedv that I ave ldevised la novel construction which is strong and durable and fully capable of taking care of the strains exerted upon the rails 3 and 4.
tails of construction as are permissible vby the appended claims may be resorted to without Ideparting from thejspirit and scope ofthe inu vention. What l claim, ters Patent, is
. .1." ln a lrail-joint, the combination .with rails having openings formed. in the web portions thereof,-` o a chairadapted to support the ends of said rails, and having a fish-bar bar and engaging th'elleads of said rails, said bar having pockets `formed therein, pins extending fthrough the' web portions of said rails andengaging in said pockets, a fish-bar said-ba-r-having pockets formed therein to' receive theop osite ends ofV said. ins, and means housed by 'saidbar and. in ependent thereof to 'secure' said rails to "said substantially as .described l rails having openings formed in their'web porthe chair and against the fish-bar 6 thereof..
