Be it known that we, WILLIAM F. HAR- Bnncnfr, of Sandusky, county of Erie, and FREDERICK Bonnenn, of Delphes, county of Allen, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suction- Boxes and we do hereby declare thatA the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled 'o in the art to ,which it appertains to make and use the same, reference `being had Ato the aceornpanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in the detail construction of suction-boxes for paper-making machines. n One object ofthe invention is -to provide a suction-box of such simple design and con- 2@ struction that any mechanic ossessing ordinary mechanical skill may p ace the same in position upon apape'r-making machine.
Another object consists in arran ing the cylinder which we ein loy with pe orations 25 of novel and eculiar orm, whereby the su r= creased to a maximum.
A Jfurther obi ect is to provide ready means `-for adjusting the suction-boxrelative to the 3Q perforated cylinder.
Afurther object is to provide conveniently- I accessible means contained within the cylinder at its outer ends for revolubly lmounting .the same and for adjusting said means.
-The invention comprises he various details of construction and the novel combination and arrangement of the parts hereinafter fully described, and speciiically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,which, with the characters of reference marked thereon, form part of this speciiication,like characters indicating like parts-in the views.

Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2, respectively, are end castings having the central, obliquely-disposed 'bracket portions 3 and 4, extending on opposite sides, the' outwardly- .extending portions of the brackets being supported upon suitable standards 5, forming part of the frame of the paper-making machine. The brackets 3 and 4 are hollow, whereby access to the interior is permitted. 6 represents rods connecting the end castings, being threaded at the ends and firmly secured to the castings 1 and r2 by means of nuts 7 on opposite sides ofthe castings. Arranged preterably at equidistant points about the peripheries of the end castings are inwardly-extending` rectangular shaped recesses 8, the parallel sides of said recesses serving as guides for Sliding blocks 9, carrying rollers 10, adapted for revolubly mounting the perforated cylinder 11, which will be further described in detail.

Extending into the castings 1 and 2 from the top margin to the plane top face of the brackets 3 and 4 are recesses 13, having upwardly-diverging side faces 14 and parallel guiding-faces 15. Arranged with its ends resting in the recesses 13 is an elongated suction-box 16, having a cross-sectional exterior configuration corresponding to the shape of the recesses. This suction-box is open at the top, there being a suitable packing 17 occupying a groove entirely surrounding said open top, and at'the ends of the box and engaging the bottom are adjusting-screws 18, threaded upwardly through the upper portions of the hollow brackets 3 and 4. lt will thus b`e seen that by reaching into the brackets the suction-box may be readily adjusted in a vertical direction/being guided between the parallel faces of the recesses 13.
19 indicates a pipe which connects with one end of the suction-box, the same connecting with asuitable exhaust device, such as a vacuum-pump. The cylinder is revolubly mounted upon the rollers 10, so as to opcrate in sliding contact with the suction-box, rotation being imparted thereto bythe felt 20, operating overthe same, although it is apparent that rotation of the cylinder independent ot' the action of the felt may be ell liected by any suitable mechanical means, such yas chain and sprocket connecting with a suitable part ol the paper-making machine. Cylinder 11 is provided with closely-arranged periorations 22. These perforations, as plainly shown in enlarged detail in Fig. et, are cone-shaped, the openings on the inner iace of the cylinder being small, whereas those on the outer face are large, and said perforations further arranged in intersecting diaoonal rows, as indicated by the lines o. c and /1 lo. This arrangenicnt oi' perforations provides a maximum oi suction area with a minimum surface in actual eontiwt with the l'elt. lt is apparent that by 'formingl the cylinder with conical periorations, diverging from within outward afar greater suction area is provided than. if these pertmatimis were of uniform diameter tlnougbont. l `urthermore, ii" the perforations 'were oi2 uniform diameter and arranged as closely as indicated in the drawings the cylimler-walls would bc obviously weakened. cylinrir constructed with eonical perforations, as shown, will be exceedingly strong7 the tendency to buckle or spring while in operation being entirely eliminated. in order to prevent endwisc movement of the cylinder 1.1 while in operation, there are previded ilanges 23 at the outer margins of the castings l and L). L It will be seen from the foregoing deseription that the parts of the invention are easily assembled and that the perforated cylinder and the suction-box are readily adjusted with relation to each. rlhe novelty, utility, and in'xproved operation of the invention are apparent.
