Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AUGUSTUS D. KLA- BER and EDWIN AUs'rw Cox, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates generally to paperfeeding mechanism designed for use in connection with stencil-printing and other similar apparatus.
It is adapted particularly for use in connection with duplicating apparatus of the type employing a rotary drum upon the sur: face, whereof awaxed sheet in which characters have previously been cut is secured.
The invention will be described in connection with apparatus of this type without, however, intent to limit the same specifically thereto.
In carrying out the invention we employ, in conjunction with the rotary drum and underlying rotary pressure-roller of a du heating apparatus, a feed-board upon W ich a paper ile is adapted to be placed. Coacting wit the upper surface of such a pile is an oscillating picker driven, preferably, by the stencil-carrying drum in such manner as to feed the up ermost sheet from the pile to the grip of the rum and the underlying pressureroller, such sheet being thereupon fed 'through the apparatus and simultaneously receiving the imprint from the stencil upon said drum.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a duplicating-machineemploying our invention, this section being taken on a line just inside one of the side members of the supporting-frame. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail illustrating certain of the parts shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4is a sectional View of a duplicatingnnachine similar in general to that shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, but illustrating a modification hereinafter to be referred to.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters denote corresponding parts, A designates the base of the machine, upon which is supported the frame of the duplicating apparatus consisting of the side members u, havin cross-rods a a, a Pivoted at a in the si e members of the frame is the duplicatordrum B, comprising two heads connected by a stencil-carrier of foraminated material, on which is secured a suitable stencil-sheet. Said drum may be operated in any suitable manner-as, for instance, by means of the pinions l) b and crank 11*.

The mechanism thus far escribed is similar in general characteristics to that of the duplicating-machine known as the rotary neostyle.

Said oscillating bar E, the arm c and the swinging arm d may be actuated in any suitable manner for the purpose hereinafter described-as, for instance, by means of a sheavef, carried by the arm (I and coacting with a cam I, carried by one of the heads of the drum B, a coil-spring f, extending between the arm a", and a pin on one of the side members of the frame, serving to maintain said sheave and cam in engagement. The arm e on one side of the machine is duplicated in a similar arm 0 at the other side, and pivotally connected with the upper end of this is an oscillating bar E, this being a counterpart of the bar E.
G designates the feed-board, adapted to receive the sheet pile g. If desired, said bars E E may be provided with a number of orifices h, suitably spaced apart, in which the gripping device (of which the shaft H is part) may be mounted to adapt the machine for feeding sheets of varyinglength.

The purpose of this mechanism is to prevent shaft H from turning to such an extent as. to allow plate in, carried thereby, to depart-very much from a osition of parallelism to the sheet pile, so-tfiat when a new pile is placed on the support the plate will assume its proper position without further manipulation b the operator.

The operation of the machine thus described is as follows: The drum B being turned and the coil-spring f maintaining engagement between the sheavef and the cam F, said cam causes the bars E E to oscillate backward and forward over the sheet pile laid upon the feed-board G, the gripping device carried by said bars being. therefore brought into operative relation with the upper surface of said pile to feed the sheets successively therefrom and between the drum and the pressure-roller C. As the gripping device moves the uppermost sheet is presse stop, but is buckled or bowed upwardly, as
shown in Fig. 1. At this timeand during 25 pause in the movement of the gripping device the cam i and sheave i are brought into 00- action by the continued movement of the drum, with the result that the stop I is moved downward (against the tension of the coil-spring '5 connected to the cross-rod a and tending to hold the said stop and the arm 1'. in the position in which they are shown in Fig. 1.) Immediately thestop I is thrown to inoperative position the resiliency of the buckled sheet causes the forward edge thereof to spring forward into the bight of the drum B and pressure-roller C. The moment the sheet is grasped by the drum and pressureroller the movement thereof through the machine is determined by the movement of said drum and the corresponding movement of the pressure-roller, the operation whereof depends upon said drum. This continued movement of the drum returns the oscillating bars E E and the gripping device carried'thereby to, its advanced forward position ready to coact" with the next successive sheet on the upper surface of the sheet pile. Before the feed-shoe begins its forward movement the sheet is gripped by the drum and pressure-roller, so that. during this movement the sheet is unaffected by the move ment of the shoe thereover. Also the shoe turns on shaft H somewhat during the forward movement to lessen the grip of theshoe on the paper.
In Fig. 4 we have illustrated a slight modifieationof the mechanism shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 with respect chiefly to the direction of movement of the oscillating bars (corresponding to the bars E E) and that of the gripping device carried thereby. In Fig. 4 the cam L, carried by the drum, coacts with a sheave Z, carried by an arm L, slotted to receive the shaft Z, whcreb the drum is mounted upon the frame 0 the machine. The arm L is pivotally connected to another arm L pivoted at Z to the machine-frame, a
coil-spring Z serving to maintain the sheave Z in engagement with the cam L. The oscillating bar E is here shown as provided with an upturned end E pivoted at E so as to receiveoscillatory movement, due to the coaction of a sheave Z and cam L. Said oscillating bar E is provided with a recess E, coacting with a support E when said bar is moved to a position permitting such coaction. The forward end of said bar is provided with a gripping device, here shown as a board may be provided with a guide E for the upper surface of the sheet pile.
the bars E and also, if desired, there may be in this modification of the apparatus, as in the a paratus of Figs. 1, 2, an 3, two of the bars 1% (the same in construction and mounting as that shown in Fig. l,) the gripping device E extending between and connecting the forward ends of such bars. The operation of this modification is clearly portrayed in Fig. 4. As the bars E are moved forward the coaction of the recesses E and the pins E permits the gripping device to drop u in e rearward movement of said bars elevates the gripping device, the same carrying with it the uppermost sheet of the 11s. Durin the pause which immediately ollows the e evation of said device opportunity is given for the sheets other than the uppermost to fall away from such uppermost sheet and resume their osition upon the pile. As the bars E and gripping device continue their rearward movement actuated by the cam L the u permost sheet, adhering to the gelatin or 'ot er material of the gripping device, is passed toward the drum unti its advancing edge is projected between such drum and the pressure-roller which detach the sheet from the gripping device and which 'operate to print upon the-sheet and pass it from the machine in the manner above described.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a rotary drum, a support for a sheet pile, a movable stop at the end of said support adjacent to said drum, a-reciprocating feeding device, and means actuated by the rotation of said drum for moving said device to buckle the top sheet of a ile on said support against said sto and t en moving sai stop'to release sai sheet, substantially as described.
2. Duplicating apparatus comprising a rotary drum, a gripping device having oscillatory movement transmitted by said drum, a feed-board underlying said device and adapted to support a sheet pile, a paper-stop and means for throwing the same to inoperative osition after said gripping device has buciiled a sheet laid upon said feed-board, substantially as described.
3. Duplicating a paratus comprising a rotary drum and a eed-board arranged in a substantially horizontal lane and adapted to support a sheet pile, ars operating in a path substantially parallel with the plane of said feed-board and sheet ile, means controlled by the drum for osci lat-ing said bars, a movable gripping device carried b said bars for coacting with and buckling the uppermost sheet of said sheet pile, a paper-stop movable to operative and inoperative positions and means carried by said drum for throwing said stop to inoperative position -tary drum and a feed-board arrange after said device has buckled the u permost sheet of said sheet pile, substantia ly as described.
4. Duplicating. apparatus comprising a rotary drum, a bar and means controlled by said drum for transmitting oscillating movement thereto, a gri 1ping device carried by said bar and mova e relatively thereto to carry it into operative and inoperative'positions, the operative position of said device permitting the same to buckle the uppermost sheet of a sheet pile to feed the same forward toward said drum, and the ino erative position of said device permitting the same to return to the normal position without influencing) the next succeeding sheet of such pile, su stantially as described.
5. Duplicating apparatus, comprisin aro-' in a substantially horizontal plane and adapted to support a sheet pile, bars having oscillating movement governed 'by said drum, and a grippin device carried by said bars and adapted to be rotated by coaction with a sheet pile on said feed-board to carry it to operative position when said bars are moved in one direction and to inoperative position when said bars are moved in the opposite direction, substantially as described.

The combination of a rotary drum, a support for a sheet pile, a movable stop at the end of said support adjacent to said drum, a cam on said drum arranged to move said stop, and a feeding device and means for reciprocating the same as said drum is r0- tated for feeding sheets successively from a pile on said support when said stop has been moved by said cam, said means bein arranged to start the feeding movement of said device before said stop is moved, substantially as described.
7. Duplicating apparatus comprising a rotary drum and a feed-board arranged in a substantially horizontal plane and adapted to support a sheet pile, a gripping device coacting with the upper surface of said pile, and having oscillating movement governed by said drum, said gripping device comprising a shaft having limited movement, a hanger depending therefrom, a plate secured to said anger, grippin material secured to said Irilate and a ro ler on either side of said anger, plate and gripping material.
8. Duplicating apparatus comprising a drum,, a feed-board adapted to support a sheet pile, a reciprocating gripper-carrier operated by said drum, a gripper pivotally connected to said carrier, said gripper extending across said support, and a gripping-surface on said gripper the major portion of which, when the gripper is in operative position, lies on the side of the pivotal axis of the gripper toward said drum, substantially as described;
