GUSTAF A. HERMANSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES H. FERRY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CAR-COUPLING.
Application filed November 2'7, 1905.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAF A. HERMAN- sON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplers, of which the Vfollowing is a specification'.
My invention relates to improvements in car-couplers of the woll-known Master Car- Builders type having a Jforked draw-head, pivoted knuckle, and gravity locking-pin.
The object of my invention is to provide a car-coupler of a strong, simple, eflicient, and durable construction in which the knuckle is automatically thrown open by the lifting of the look to the required extent.
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result-that is to say, it consists in the coinbination, with the forked draw-head, pivoted knuckle, and verticallynnovable gravity locking-pin, of a rotary gear knuckle-thrower journaled to rotate in a suitable chamber in the draw-head, the knuckle and the lockingin both having racks engaging gear-teeth on the knuckle-thrower,
My invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a central vertical longitudinal section of a car-coupler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 lis a hori zontal section on line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3 oi Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail section of the draw-head on line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail elevation of the lock. Fig. 6 is a detail section of the knuckle on line 6 6 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 7 is a detail plan view of a portion of thedrawhead. r
In the drawings, A represents the drawhead of the coupler, the same having the customary guard-arm c and pivot-arrn a and vertical opening ai* to receive the lock. B is the knuckle, having the customaryfront arm b and rear arm or tail l, and C is the pivotpin connecting the knuckle to the drawehead. D is the lock, the same preferably having a movable lifting-piece F, fitting in a longitudinal slot d in the lock and having a hook f, engaging the cross-pin or shoulder d of the lock. The lifting-piece engages at its lower end a Specification of Letters Patent.

cam or incline cl2 on the lock when the liftingpiece is in lits lowermost position, and thus throws the shoulder f' on the lifting-piece under the shoulder a on thc draw-head to prevent the lock 'from creeping or jumping upward when the cars are coupled together and the train is in motion. The lifting-piece F has a cap or langef3 to close the locking-pin `opening in the draw-head and an eye j"AL `lor connection with the lifting-lever E through the clevis E. Thelock D is also provided with a lock-set ledge or shoulder d, adapted to engage the lock-set leg or shoulder ai* on the bottom web of the draw-head, and thus set the lock in position 'for uncoupling. The lock Dis also preferably provided with a lock set ledge or shoulder fl", adapted to engage and rest upon the rear arm or tail ol" the knuckle, and thus set or support the lock in position for coupling. All these parts may be of any ordinary or customary construction familiar to those skilled in the art.
The drawhead is 'further provided 'in its upper portion at one side of the lock with a rccess or chamber a5 to receive a rotary-gear knuckle-tlnower ,Cr and with slot or bearingguide a. to receive and confine thc shaft portion g of the knuckle-thrower. The rotary knuckle-thrower Gl has a gear g meshing with a rack b2 on the upper face oi' the knuckle B and operating to throw the knuckle open when the rotary knuckle-thrower is turned on its axis. The rotary lmuckle-'thrower G also has gear-teeth g2, which mesh with a rack di on the locking-pin D when the lock is lifted to the required extent, thus rotating the knuckle-thrower and throwing the knuckle open. The rotary knuckle-throwcr Cr also has a circular boss g3, which rests upon the upper lace of the knuckle, and thus supports the knuckle-thrower on the knuckle. The shoulders c7 at the ends ol" the guide-slot a prevent the ki'iuckle-thrower from moving longitudinally in the draw-head. The rear arm or tail oi the knuckle has a hook or projection b3, which when the knuckle is closed Iits in the slot or recess a of the draw-head and tends to relieve the pivot-pin from strain. The bottom web or iioor of the draw-head is also provided with a ledge or shoulder a9, which engages the flange or shoulder lf* on the rear arm or tail of the knuckle and ail'ords a further connecting means between the knuckle and draw-head IOO when the knuckle is closed and tends to relieve the pivot-pin from strain. The upper web of the draw-head is also preferably furni shed with a ledge or shoulder c1", which engages a flange or shoulder b5 on the upper face of t-he knuckle and serves as a still further means for connecting the knuckle with the draw-head when the knuckle is closed and of relieving the pivot-pin from strain.
