To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PROSPER O. CoMEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mo- Call, in the parish of Ascension and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Cane-Shaver, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices known as stubbleshavers for use in the cultivation of sugar-cane.
The object of the invention is to provide a compact machine of this character having a knife of novel construction which is maintained in the proper plane at all times during its vertical adjustment.
A still further object is to provide a machine of this characterhaving its adjusting mechanism disposed along the center thereof,
the drivers seat being also located upon the longitudinal center of the machine, thereby resulting in the equal distribution of weight over all parts of the machine and permitting the machine to ride smoothly upon the ground.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of drag-bars supporting arches which are disposed adjacent the ends thereof and extend under the longitudinal beam which extends throughout the length of the machine. Guides are disposed on the drag-bars and in them are mounted slides disposed at the ends of a knife. Mechanism is em loyed for adjusting the knife vertically. A fluke is suspended from the rear portion of the beam and is mounted to move vertically in relation thereto, and this fluke is provided with means whereby it may be raised or lowered in unison with the knife. The drivers seat is located upon the beam close to the lever employed for manipulating the knife and fluke.
The invention also consists of certain other novel features of construction and combinations of arts, which will be hereinafter more more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 1 are drag-bars, which are connected adjacent their ends by upstanding yokes 2, upon the centers of which is secured a central longitudinally-extending beam 3, the
rear portion of which preferably projects be-- yond the rear ends of the drag-bars. Upstanding guides 4 are secured to the drag-bars intermediate their ends, and the upper portions of these guides are rigidly held by braces 5, secured thereto and to the sides of the beam 3. The guides 4 are not arranged directly opposite each other; but one of them is nearer the rear end of the machine than the other. A cutting-blade 6 is mounted between the guides and extends diagonally across the machine, and the ends of the blade are secured to slides 7, mounted within the guides. These slides have parallel earsS, extending laterally therefrom adjacent their lower ends and embracing the guides. each guide at its upper end and cooperate with the braces 5 to form openings 10, within which the slides work. Pivot-p ns 11 extend inward from the slides and engage the ends of a yoke 12, which extends upward and across the beam 3 and has upstanding ears 13 on the top thereof. 7 These ears are connected by a pivot-bolt 14, on which are mounted the ends of arms 15, extending from a rotatable shaft 16. This shaft is mounted in a standard 17, secured to the beam 3, and has-a lever 18 extending from one end whereby it may be rotated manually. A rack 19 is fixedly secured to one of the standards 17 and is adapted to engage a spring-pressed dog 20, connected to the lever 18, whereby said lever may be locked in any position to which it may be adjusted.
An opening 21 is formed in the rear portion of the beam 3, and slidably mounted therein is the shank 22 of a fluke 23. This shank is connected by a link 24 with one end of a bell-crank lever 25, fulcrumed upon a standard 26 on beam 3. The other end of the bell-crank lever is connected,by means of of a curved rod 27, with an arm 28, extending downward from the shaft 16. Parallel standards 29 are secured to the beam 3 at opposite sides of the rod 27 and support a drivers seat 100 30 above said rod, so that the driver when occupying it will have convenient access to the lever 18. A colter 31 is secured to the front portion of beam 3 directly in rear of the front yoke 2, and a clevis 32 is arrangedat the front 10 5 end of the beam 3. Handles 33 extend rearwardly from the drag-bars so that the machine can be readily manipulated by an operator walking in rear thereof.
It will be seen that as a result of the conno Straps 9 are secured to struction herein shown and described the weight of the machine is balanced along the centrally-disposed beam 3 and therefore this weight will be evenly distributed over the machine. As a drivers seat is located upon the beam and between the two yokes 2, the eight of the driver will not cause the machine to tilt. The knife can therefore be maintained in proper relation to the ground. By swinging the lever 18 upward the arms will press downward on the yoke 12 and cause the slides 7 to move downward within the guides 4, thereby bringing the knife to a predetermined level. This operation of the lever will cause the rod 27 to press backward upon the bell-crank lever and will result in the downward movement of the shank 22 of fluke 23. It will thus be noted that the fluke and knife can be adjusted vertically in unison and by the manipulation of a single lever. Considerable importance is attached to the fact that the knife is directly connected with the arch, because with this arrangement the knife is held positively at the proper angle to the ground while the same is being'adjusted and there is no danger of one end being raised or lowered faster than the other.

fluke carried by the beam, a lever, and means erating-lever pivotally supported above the beam, a pivotal connection between said lever and the horizontal cutter, and means operated by the lever for raising or lowering the fluke in unison with the horizontal cutter.
