Description
*tti uiitmly @time est F. KA. PLUMBLY, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 83,089, dated October 13, 1868.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To vall whom 'tt lnwr/ z/ concern Be it known that I, F. K. PLUMBLY, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, and the State of New York, havepinvented a new and improved Hand Flaming-Machine forv planing the crozes in tank and cistern-stave's, Ste. and I do hereby declare that the following is a rll, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to theannexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure lorepresents afront view, a portion being cut out so as to show all the working-parts.
Figure '2 is a side view,
LetterA is a circle-plane secured to the suspendingrod B. It is provided with a cutter on both sides and a cutter on its face, for the purpose of cutting and planing a groove across a stave. The bottom of said groove will become curved in consequence of the suspending-rod B and gauge-block E. n
B is the plane-suspending rod. It is secured with one end lto the plane A, Yand with the other end to rest-pin C.' y It is provided with a long slot-hole, into which are secured a movable box, D, and a gauge-block, E. Said box ts and turns on rest-pin C,- and as the plane A is cutting progressively,v D slides up in said slot until it comes in contact with E. The rod B becomes then suspended, and'causes the plane to describe a true circle, and in consequence of which, the
bottom of the grooves, or crozes, as they are technically termed, becomes curved correspondingly.
C is the rest-pin. It is secured intoalong slot-hole in the upright, as seen in g.'1. It may be shifted up or down in order to suit the desired sweep of the rod B and plane A.
E is the gauge-block. Its object is to make the plane become suspended 'as 'soon as thev desired depth of vthe croze is obtained. It may be shifted inthe slot for the purpose of making it to correspond with O.
F F are two guides for the purpose of guiding the plane A.
G is a lever secured beneath the bed-plate. An`
adjustable yoke H is connected to it about in the middle. Said lever is also provided with a latch-spring on its lower side for the purpose of `raising the lever with the yoke H whenever the same becomes disengaged from the ratch-tooth, as seen in iig. 2. The whole arrangement has for its object the seeming ofthe stave to be grooved down to the bed-plate.
H is an adjustable yoke. It is for the purpose of answering various sizes of staves. It is varied by means of two thumb-screws, as is to be seen in igs. 1 and 2.
I is also a lever for the same purpose as lever H. It is secured to the top of the bed-plate so that the stave may be put in between the lever andbed-plate. It is held down to the stave by means of an incline,1K.
L L are two guides for the' purpose of setting thev stave.
It can easily be observed how to operate this Inachine. Put a stave at theplace provided for, then .secure it down to the bed-plate by means of G, H,
and I. The plane is then to be putin between guides F F, and moved forward and backward like an ordinary hand-plane.
Having thus fully explained and described my invention,
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination of the hand-planeA withthe Asuspending-rod B, box D, rest-pin O, and gauge-block E, all constructed to operate substantially as described.
F. K. PLUMBLY. Witnesses:
H. WM. DoPP, MICH. I'. STARK.
