JOSEPH o. SWA crow. OF NEW romr. Y.. ASSIGNOR OF ONF-HALF TO nrnsm' KlL-tNT-Z, 0F BROOKLYN. NEW YORK.
ELECTRICAL CEILING-S WITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
' 'tnnlication filed April 29,1905. Serial No. 258,057.
To all urhmn it may concern:
Be it known that I. JosEPn G. SwALLow. a Zscript-ion the operation will be obvious. Supcitizcn of the United States of America. repose the switch, asshown in Fig. l. to be siding in the borough of Brooklyn. city of on, then by pulling the cord K the lever( New York, county of Kings, State of New will be turned tothe position shown by dot- York, have invented an Improved Electrical ted line's, thereby turning the arm 0 to the Ceiling-S\\'it .-h,-of which the following is a 2 left and raisingtheweight W. The pawld en specification. I I gaging a notch in the ratchet E turns th My invention relates to ceiling-switches, shaft (1, thereby turning the internal switch and )articularly that style which comprises a to break the circuit. As soon as the cord is regu ar rotary snap switch fastened ,to a i released the weight W will brin the lever frame secured beyond ordinary reach and 'bac-k tothe position shown by filll lines in i passing through the collar 0. From this dc adapted to be operated by pulling a chain.
The object of the invention is to construct a simple inexpensive device that is not liable to get out of order or wear out with constant use.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of thcsame.,. Fig. 3 is a view, on a large scale, of the gravity-pawl and ratchet mechanism; and Fig. 4 is a separate view of the three-arm lever.
In the drawings, A represents the rotary snap-switch proper, which may be of anysuitable construction, with its operatingshaft- (1 horizontal and ext-ending centrally through the same and also through the frame B, on which the switch is mounted as a convenient means for securing thcsame to the ceiling. on the shaft a is mounted free -to turn the three-arm lever C, to one end 0 of which the operating chain or cord K is attached. Atthe opposite end 0 the weight W is secured, which tends to keep the lever in the position-shown by full lines in Fig. I. At the central portion of this lever is a third arm c, normally above the shaft 0. ()n this arm is a hollow cylindrical body I), open at its lower (and and in which is housed aloose pin (l. which acts as a gravity-pawl to engage one or other of the notches in the ratchetwheel lI.
This wheel is firmly secured on the shaft 1! and turns therewuh, being secured by any suitable means, such as a set-screw e,
Fig. l .with thepawl I) back to'its normal vertical position, where it engages the next not h in the wheel E and is again ready for use.
i I claim as my invention-- l l. Arotarysnaps\vitch, having an operating-shaft and a frame for supporting the i switch, said shaft passing through the switchoperating mechanism and frame, in combination with a ratchet-wheel and a three-armed lever on the rear end of .said shaft. a gravitypawl on one of said arms to engage the ratchet-wheel, a weight on another arm for returning the pawl to its normal osition, l and means connected with the thir arm for operating the switch inde fiendently of the usual switch-operating mechanism.
2. A'rotary snap-switch, a frame for supporting said switch and shaft of said switch in a horizontal plane in combination with a ratchet-wheel on the shaft, a three-armed le ver loose on the said shaft, :1 gravity-pawl consisting of a cylinder, mounted on one of said arms, a pin free to move therein, means on another of said arms for moving said leyer, and a weight to return said pawl and lever to its normal position on the third arm.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, JOSEPH G. SWALLOW. VVitncsse-s:
