Description
PATENTED SEPT. 11, 1906.
0. B. JAMES MARKER FOR CORN PLANTERS.
APPLIOATION FILED JAN. 29, 1906.
InueiZZD @@W UNITED STATES OVIETT B. JAMES, OF MACKSBURG, IOWA.
MARKER FOR CORN-PLANTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1906.
Application filed January 29,1906. Serial No. 298,329.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OvIETT B. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macksburg, in the county of Madison and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Marker for Corn-Planters, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a marker for corn-planters of simple, durable, and inexpensive construction which may be easily and conveniently moved by the operator from operative position to an upright position where it will not interfere with the ordinary use of the-corn-planter, and, further, to provide a device of this kind that may be easily and quickly attached to any ordinary planting-machine My invention consists in certain details in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel shows a rear elevation of a cornplanter frame with my improvements applied thereto, one of the marker-arms shown in position for use and the other in its inoperative or folded position. Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of a device embodying my invention, and Fig. 3 shows a top or plan view of a portion of a planter-frame with my improvement applied thereto and shown in position for use.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference-numeral 10 to indicate the planter-frame.
It is to be understood that two markers are used on each planter. These markers operate independently of each other and are identical in construction, except that one is designed for one side of the planter and the other for the opposite side. Hence but one will be hereinafter particularly described.
The reference-numeral 11 indicates a plate forming the base of the marker device. Secured to this plate is an upright 12, formed with a brace 13 to support it. Fulcrumed to the upright 12 near its lower end is a markerarm 14, connected with the upright by the pivot 15. Its inner end is curved upwardly and inwardly beyond the pivotal point, as
A link 19 is pivoted to said lever and to the inner end of the arm 14. Mounted on the upright 12 is a stop 20. The parts 14, 18, and 19 are so arranged with relation to each other and to the stop 20 that when the arm 18 is moved to position for elevating the arm 14 the pivotal point of the lever 18 and link 19 will approach and pass a line between the pivotal point of the lever 18 on the upright 12 and the pivotal pointof the link 19 on the arm 14. In other words, it will pass a dead-center, and thus hold the arm 14 in its upright position with the link 19 resting against the stop 20, as shown to the left in Fig. 1.
The reference-numeral 21 indicates a roller supported on brackets fixed to the upright 12. Said roller stands in a vertical position projected outwardly from the outer edge of the upright 12 and serves the purpose of protecting the arm 14 from becoming caught or entangled in a check-row wire used in connection with the corn-planter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is
1. In a marker for corn-planters, the combination of a pivoted arm, a marker on one end thereof, a link pivoted to the other end thereof, a lever fulcrumed to a suitable support and connected with said link for manipulating the markerarm, a stop to engage the link and limit the movement of the lever in one direction, the pivot-point of the link and lever arranged so that during the upward movement of the marker-arm it will ap proach and pass a line between the pivotpoint of the lever and the pivot-point of the marker-arm before the link engages the stop to thereby retain the marker-arm in its elevated position.
2. A marker for corn-planters, comprising a plate, an upright secured to the plate, a marker-arm pivoted to the upright, a markerdisk on the outer end thereof, a link pivoted to the inner end of the marker-arm, a lever fulcrumed t0 the top of the upright, a stop fixed t0 the u right, the pivotal point ofthe roller connected with said upright and prolever and lin; arranged to approach and jecting outwardly from the lower end thereof. 1 0 pass a line between the fulcrum of the lever OVIETT B. JAMES. 5 and the pivot-point of the marker-arm be- Witnesses:
arm and to the said upright and a vertical fore the link engages the stop, a brace-rod H. W. BROWN, connected to the outer end of the marker J. W. LEE.
