other delicate mechanism will be avoided` and liability of breakage or disarrangement of the parts reduced to the minimum.
The invention consists of indicating mechanism operated by the expansion and contraction of a composite metallic tube and of certain novel combinations of parts whereby the movement of said tube is communicated to the indicator.
The invention also consists in a sectional casing of novel form and means for detachably connecting the sections thereof.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its features of novelty will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a pyronieter constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same with the dial removed and with parts shown broken away and in section. Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the dial in position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one side of the casing which incloses the mechanism. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the other si de of the casing. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the mechanism for operating the shaft of the indicator, and Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of the device for connecting the Operating lever of the indicating mechanism with the longitudinally-niovable tube.
The casing of the device consists of two semicylindrical halves or sections l and 2, each having a rear end wall 3 formed with an edge slot 4, said slots when brought together providing an opening for the attachment of the composite expansible tube. The end walls 3 of the casing-sections are also each formed with a bolt-hole 5 adjacent to the slots 4. The front end of the cylindrical easing formed by the two separable sections 1 and 2 is open to receive a dial and its supporting means.
In addition to securing means at the ends of the casing, which will be described hereinafter, the sections 1 and 2 are connected by suitably-disposed lugs 6, projecting from the side edges of each of the sections in position to overlap the inner' surface of the other section. The number and relative arrangement of these lugs may be varied but I have shown in the drawings three lugs 6 on the section 1 and two on the opposite section.
From the inner si de of the section 1 of the casing projects an arm 7, preferably cast integral with the section and formed with a bearing S for the purpose hereinafter disclosed.
Referring now to Fig. 1, the reference-numeral 9 designates an iron tube arranged within a brass tube 10, said tubes constituting a composite tube to which heat is applied. The iron tube 9 is slightly longer than the outer brass tube, projecting beyond the latter at its rear end, where it is screwthreaded to receive a coupling consisting of a double nut 11, the outer end of which is threaded to fit the threaded end of the iron tube, while the inner end of the nut, which is of greater diameter thanthe outer end thereof, fits upon the rear threaded end of the brass tube. It will thus be observed that the rear ends of the two concentric tubes are firmly secured together. The inner or forward end of the tubes 9 and 1() fit within a bushing 12, fitting within the opening in the rear wall of the casing formed by the slots 4 of the casing-sections. Freni the inner side of the bushing 12 project parallel ears 13, perforated to receive a cross-pin 14, serving as the fulcrum of a curved lever 15. The forward end of the iron tube 9 is bifurcated to provide parallel ears 16, between which the upper end 17 of the lever 15 is pivotally secured by a pin 18, extending through perforations in the ears 16. The bushing 12 is formed with an annular flange 19, bearing against the rear end of the cylindrical casing and formed with bolt-holes 2O for the reception of bolts extending through the openings 5 in the end wall to secure the two sections 1 and 2 together at the rear end of the cylinder. It will be noted that this flanged bushing thus serves the double purpose of a support for the tubes 9 and 10 and a connecting means for the two sections of the casing.

are connected by the dial 21 and its supporting devices consisting of a ring 22, fitting within an annular iiange 23, formed on the dial and having a vertically-disposed annular flange 24, bearing against the adjacent outer edges of the casing and dial-flange 23, and a clamping-ring 25, encompassing the outer end of the casing and having a forward extension bent upon itself to provide a flaring annular iiange 26, and a vertically-disposed annular flange 27, the latter serving to secure the dialglass 28 in position against the flange 24 of the ring 22. The front ends of the casing-sections are thus secured together, the clamping-ring 25 being removably secured to the casing by screws 29.
30 designates a bracket having its ends bent at right angles to form securing-lugs 31, which are bolted to the inner side of the casing to support the bracket in vertical position. A This bracket is formed with a bearing, through which extends a dial-shaft 32, the rear end of which is supported in the bearing 8 of the arm 7. The forward end of the shaft 32 extends centrally through the dial and carries an indicating hand or pointer 33.
Upon the shaft 32 on the inner side of the bracket is mounted a gear-pinion 34, meshing with the teeth of a sector-gear 35, pivotally secured between perforated lugs 36, projecting from the side of the casing-section 1. The sector 35 is loosely connected by a link l37 to the forward end of the lever 15.
The improvement, constructed as above described, operates as follows: The composite tube, comprising the inner iron pipe or tube and the outer brass tube, is inserted into an oven or other heat-chamber, and when the brass tube 10 is heated suiiiciently to cause it to expand longitudinally the iron Ytube 9 will be forced inwardly of the casing,
and thus operate the pointer of the dial through the intermediacy of the lever 15, link 37, sector 35, and the pinion 34, fixed upon the dial-shaft. A contraction of the brass pipe, caused by a reduction of the temperature of the oven, will effect a reverse movement of the dial-pointer, as will be obvious from the drawings and description. In case the device is to be used where the composite tube is to come into direct contact with the fire I cover the brass tube 10 with a protecting metallic covering, as indicated by otted lines in Fig. 1.
It will be apparent that my improvement entirely avoids the employment of springs and that the simplicity of construction of my device permits the ready repairing or renewal of the parts in case of accidental breakage or disarrangement.
I would have it understood that the invention includes allsuch minor changes and modifications in the details of construction as may fall within the spirit of the invention as set forth in the following claims.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pyrometer, the combination with a casing comprising separable semicylindrical halves or sections, overlapping lugs carried by said sections, a' clamping-ring on one end of the sections, and an indicator within the -connected to the bifurcated end of the iron tube.
2. A pyrometer comprising a casing, embodying two sections having projecting lugs overlapping the inner surfaces of the sections, a dial secured to the casing, a bushing securing the sections together, a shaft mounted in bearings within the casing, and carrying a dial-hand, a gear-pinion on said shaft, a sector-gear mounted within the casing, a lever fulcrumed within the casing, a link connecting said sector and lever, a tube mounted within the bushing, and a longitudinallymovable tube mounted within the :firstmentioned tube and connected to said lever.
3. In a pyrometer, a cylindrical casing comprising separable sections having projecting lugs overlapping the inner surfaces of the sections, in combination with a clamping-ring encompassing one end of the casing, and means for securing the casing-sections at the opposite end consisting of a bushing secured to the end wall of the casing.
