Description

H. H. HUNTLEY.
Cooking Stove.
Patented Aug. 19, 185L- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOSEA H. I-IUNTLEY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
COOKING-STOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,300, dated August 19, 1851.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, HOSEA I-I. HUNTLEY, of Cincinnati, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Double-Oven Cooking Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, hereby made part of this specification, in which drawing the stove is shown in isometrical perspective, such parts being left out or broken out as would interfere with a view of the improvements, and the plates of the lower portion of stove being broken out and dropped perpendicularly below the upper portion, so as to show the improvements found in the lower portion, the same being connected by dotted lines to the upper portion of the stove, the whole forming a thorough and complete illustration of the construction of the stove.
My object in this stove is to attain even baking and cooking in both ovens, at the same time leaving the boiler flue in the enjoyment of the full action of the fire. To effect these advantages in double-oven cooking stoves, the ovens (a) and (b), of which are on the same level as to their bottom plates, I draw off a small portion of the current when its heat has been most expended and interpose it between the hearthplate (0), fire back ((Z), and boiler flue plate (6), and the upper portions (h) of the ovens, this draft being commenced at the upper front corner of the front oven and discharged at an opening (1') made purposely small so as to choke the draft and being cent-rally situated in a flange (j), projecting downward from the boiler flue plate (6) into the exit flue and also being forced to wind around closed chambers (Z) and (m) formed by flanges (n) and (0) projecting downward sufiiciently deep to rest on the top oven plates and force the draft to the sides of the stove at these points, the said closed chambers being the one immediately under the fireplace and the other situated centrally under the boiler flue plate, both chambers forming respectively one casting each with the hearth plate and boiler flue plate and serving the purpose of clogging the draft at these points. The full force of the fire having passed through the boiler flue, the draft dips down rear corner diving flues (p) and (1]) and traverses the bottom flues which consist of the usual side flues (7 and (q) and middle return flue There is also a flue (u) in front of the front oven (whether this oven extends under the hearth or not) and the draft there is due to the arrangement aforementioned, the three fold object being thereby attained, of heating the front plate of the front oven, of int-erposing a portion of the draft that has expended its main heat, as a cushion to protect the ovens as above alluded to from the intense heat of the boiler flue and yet not have suflicient draft there to carry up any ashes whereby the spaces above the ovens and below the hearth and boiler flue would be choked up.
So as to leave no part of the ovens without contact with the draft I interpose between the front and back oven a chamber (0) in height equal to the front oven. This chamber receives the draft or heated currents from below through spaces (w) and (as) in the bottom plates (y) and of the ovens, where said plates overlay the bottom side flues, the said plates being made to overlap each other cover over and shut out any communication between the bottom return flue (t) and the aforesaid chamber Having thus fully clearly and exactly described my improvements in double-oven cooking stoves what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The closed chambers (Z) and (m) and opening in connection with the space between the hearth plate (0) fire back, (J) and boiler flue plate (6), and the upper portion of the ovens at their plates (g) and (h), the whole being arranged substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand before two-subscribing witnesses.
HOSEA H. HUNTLEY.
